FREE Joel Unicycling His Way to Success! By Sophie Fitzgerald Twenty one year old, Joel Gleeson has been performing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for two weeks with the ‘Flair Actions Sports’ Team. The rural unicyclist embraced the city while he continues to prepare for events as the National Bike Trials roll around in May. Purchasing his own unicycle at the age of 10, he gradually developed his skills over the years, a decade later finishing second at his first national event. It requires him to have dedication, continued page 2 Emirates Park SCONE CUP CARNIVAL Scone Cup Race Day Friday, 17 May 2013 Inglis Guineas/Darley Dark Jewel Race Day Saturday, 18 May 2013 434 Bunnan Road Scone NSW Tel: 02 6545 1607 Image: Joel Gleeson performing at this year’s City Class Racing - Country Style... Some of his recent achievements include the NSW Pro Bike Trial Championships and competing in the Bike Trials Nationals last month. The sport itself can seem rather simple, but Joel has taken it to an extreme new level as he rides the mountain bike trails where he passes through obstacle courses of all kinds which bring challenge and competition. During his stay in Sydney for the annual Easter Show, he performed four shows per day for the entire fortnight after being discovered by the Flair team from his YouTube Channel. “My favourite bit of the Easter Show would’ve been getting paid to do what I love doing, meeting new people and having fun at the same time.” explained Joel. But after a busy few weeks, the self-taught rider will barely catch a break as he prepares daily for the World Trial Championships in 2014 - his ultimate goal. To get a preview of Joel’s incredible talent head to his YouTube channel at www.youtube. com/user/JoelGleesonUnicycles to watch his riding videos. The 28th Annual Steamfest will take place at the Maitland Railway Station precinct over the 13th & 14th April 2013. Highlights of this magnificent steam filled weekend include, the ever so popular Great Train Race on Sunday morning, the Grand Parade on the Rally Ground covering the evolution of transport through time and the Steamfest Bazaar with over 100 stalls. Specialty train excursions in 2013 include the Barrington Bullet, Kids Party Train and following the success of 2012, the Stroud Road excursion will ensure residents from Dungog and surrounds can also enjoy the excitement of Steamfest. Steamfest History: In 1983 the last coal operating steam haulage freight service was closed on the South Maitland Railway Line, effectively ending a century old institution. In response to this closure, in 1986 the first Hunter Valley Steamfest was held. Steam had played an integral part in the development of the Hunter Valley, and it was felt that the tradition of steam should be kept alive for future generations through this event. The first Steamfest was organised by a dedicated group of community volunteers whose vision was that Steamfest would become an annual fixture in the City’s calendar. Twenty seven years later it is thought that it can be safely said their vision was realised.
