Brannen, special to icenetwork Although both are coming off injuries, Polina Edmunds and Nathan Chen treated fans to memorable performances at 'An Evening with Champions.' Sarah S. Brannen "An Evening with Champions," the annual Jimmy Fund benefit run entirely by Harvard University students, made an early appearance this year on Sept. 9 and 10 at Harvard's Bright Arena. Nathan Chen, Polina Edmunds and Kimmie Meissner starred, along with twotime Olympic champions Oleg and Ludmila Protopopov and a host of skaters who are enrolled at Harvard. All proceeds from the show, which has raised more than $2.8 million over the past 46 years, benefit cancer care and research at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute. On Saturday afternoon, families of young cancer patients and survivors, as well as siblings of the patients, were invited to the arena to skate. Skate Canada is the second of six events in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. Stefania Berton/Ondrej Hotarek (ITA) clinch Pairs gold Italy’s Stefania Berton/Ondrej Hotarek clinched the Pairs gold medal, the first Grand Prix gold medal for an Italian Pair team. Wenjing Sui/Cong Han of China claimed the silver medal while overnight leaders Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada settled for the bronze. Performing to “Dracula” by Philipp Glass, Berton/Hotarek completed a triple toe-double toe-double toe combination, a triple twist, throw triple loop and Salchow. The European bronze medalists achieved a level four for two lifts and the pair combination spin and earned a personal best of 124.54 points which added up to 193.92 overall and they moved up from second place to take the title. “It is a big surprise for us. We just went out today and wanted to do our best like we do every day and today we had also a little bit of luck. -

Several top skaters want to book their ticket to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. The world's top figure skaters are competing for a prize money of US $ 180,000 per individual event of the Grand Prix. 49 skaters/couples from 12 ISU Members have been invited to Trophée Eric Bompard. The event is headlined by three-time and reigning World Champion Patrick Chan (CAN), Olympic Ice Dance Champions Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir (CAN) and two-time World Pairs Champions Qing Pang/Jian Tong (CHN). Following their win at their home Grand Prix Skate Canada, Virtue/Moir are aiming at the top of the podium in Paris again and at qualifying for the Grand Prix Final. Two-time European Champions Nathalie Pechalat/Fabian Bourzat (FRA) have won the Lexus Cup of China and want to secure their spot in the Final as well as another medal. 2013 European silver medalists Elena Ilinykh/Nikita Katsalapov (RUS) are looking to improve on their fourth-place finish from NHK Trophy last week. -

Skate Canada is the second of six events in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford capture Pairs Short Program World bronze medalists Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada edged out Italy’s Stefania Berton/Ondrej Hotarek and Wenjing Sui/Cong Han of China for a narrow lead in the Pairs Short Program. Duhamel/Radford completed a triple twist and three level-four elements in their program to “Tribute”, a piece composed by Radford himself. However, Duhamel stepped out of the side by side triple Lutz and touched down on the throw triple Lutz. The Canadians scored 69.57 points. “We are really pleased with our debut of the season. We haven’t competed internationally yet this year. Obviously it could have gone a little bit better, but that was in the range of the scores that we were looking for at this time of the year. We’re really excited to see our program build and the scores build as we head towards the Olympics”, Duhamel noted. -

The men had practice in the main arena right before the women competed. When the U.S. ladies took the ice, (my coach) Kori [Ade] and I were in my room playing cards. We took a break to turn on the TV and watch the ladies compete. China aired every event live, so even though we couldn't be there cheering in person, we were cheering loud and proud from my hotel room! Polina [Edmunds], Ashley [Wagner] and Gracie [Gold] all rocked the house! All three of them skated beautiful programs.
