New England Regionals . . . a Big Sendoff

The Skating Club of Boston is proud to send 97 competitors to this year’s New England Regional Championships, October 12–16, in Warwick, RI. Winners and other medalists will go on to compete at next month’s Eastern Sectionals in Hyannis.

Last Friday, September 28, the Club hosted a send-off exhibition and dinner to honor these skaters. We had a great turnout of about 250 people, including skaters and their guests. The dinner, catered by Roche Brothers, offered an assortment of delicious foods and desserts and was quite a hit amongst our guests. This is the first time the Club has used the catering service for dinner and they certainly proved to measure up to our expectations by providing exceptional service. The evening was filled with fantastic exhibition performances by our New England Regionals competitors who have been working hard this season to perfect their programs.

2012 New England Regional competitors—Marlborough Congratulations to all our skaters who’ve qualified for this important competition. Best of luck to everyone!

The 2014 U.S. Championships also mark the 100th anniversary of the event—and is sure to be a spectacular celebration of skating, both on and off the ice.

Most exciting of all: The winners and other medalists will go on to compete in the Winter in Sochi, Russia, February 7–23, 2014. Babson Summer Camp Keeps Cool

45 Campers Welcomed This Year

The Skating Academy hosted its inaugural Summer Camp at Babson College July 16–27, hosting 45 skaters during its two week-long sessions. Campers participated in off-ice conditioning and dance classes, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities on the beautiful Babson campus in Wellesley.

However, the campers’ highlights took place in the ice rink. The development of skating skills in fun, age- and skating-level- appropriate groups, and the opportunities to experience choreography, skating with “props”—think hats and other costume pieces, foam noodles, and much more—made it easy to see why the on-ice activities were Summer Camp off-ice training so popular. Photos courtesy of Jamie Hull and Robin Lee The camp is led by Directors Melanie Lambert and Fred Palascak, with the assistance of several Assistant Counselors and teens who volunteered as Counselors In Training.

2013 Dates Coming Soon

Dates for the 2013 camp session will be announced later this fall. Registration for next year’s Summer Camp will begin in early winter. Sign up early so next year’s Summer Camp can be part of your 2013 itinerary! Please be sure to watch for email announcements and, of course, check the Summer Camp tab under Events at www.skatingacademy.org

PSA Conference–Held in Boston!–Wrap-Up

The Professional Skaters Association (PSA), the governing body and official education certification and training program for U.S Figure Skating and coaches, held its annual conference in Boston May 23–26.

The Skating Club of Boston was one of the conference’s training and educational venues, and provided classroom, testing, and on-ice demonstration space. The Club was packed on Friday, May 25, as more than 500 coaches from across the country and around the world converged for lectures, demonstrations, and a picnic lunch.

On-ice demonstrations covered the genres of singles, pairs, dance, and synchronized skating. The programs also showcased several Club members who work alongside coaching luminaries such as Mark Mitchell, Peter Johansson, , Pasquale Camerlengo, Saga Krantz, Paul Wylie, and Bobbe Shire. The skaters demonstrated teaching techniques for , Lutz and Axel jumps, advanced spins and footwork, among other skating elements.

As our PSA guests were leaving the final day, a familiar theme resonated—The Skating Club of Boston once again provided an excellent venue and high levels of service and programming.

Skating Academy Update

The Skating Academy got off to a great start this fall—enrollment is up approximately 20% from last year!

What’s New This Year?

The Skating Academy successfully introduced Parent Welcome Meetings—parent education that includes the following courses:

Skating 101—Teaches how to maximize your enjoyment of the group lesson experience. Parents are educated on a wide range of topics, including skate lacing, what to wear, arriving on time, not distracting skaters once the Ice Rules are on the ice, and the importance of practice time. Each meeting is followed by a Q & A session that parents find helpful. Skating 101 is held during the second week of classes.

What’s Next?—Covers testing, registration, and the many extra-curricular activities including Basic Skills competitions, , Babson Summer Camp, and group opportunities with Team Excel (synchronized skating) and Theatre On Ice. Information is also shared on the Introductory level of membership at the Club and the benefits of Club membership as a whole. This course takes place during the second-to-last-week of classes.

What’s the Same This Year?

Once again, The Skating Academy is hosting four Basic Skills competitions this year. Save the dates: February 9 (The Skating Club of Boston), March 9 (Frog Pond), March 16 (Marlborough), and June 8 (Foxboro). Volunteers are needed for judging, merchandise, hospitality, registration/skater check-in, monitoring, and more.

Enthusiastic volunteers are also needed to help staff the information/registration table during classes.

Theatre On Ice Acting Up

The Skating Club of Boston’s Theatre On Ice teams are busy preparing for another exciting season!

Encore Practices have begun on Sunday evenings, starting at 5:10pm, with Encore of Boston. Competing in the Open division, Encore has a full roster of 16 skaters ranging in age from 8 to 15, yet is always interested in taking on new skaters.

Center Stage Center Stage, the preliminary team, begins practices on Sunday, November 11, also at 5:10pm. The team has limited room avail- able for skaters who have passed Free Skate 1 in the Basic Skills program, but not passed any test higher than pre-preliminary.

ACT I Our senior team, ACT I, practices on Sundays at 6:40pm and Tuesdays at 8:30pm. ACT I also has a full cast this year but always welcomes interested skaters. They performed their La Nouba free skate at An Evening with Champions this past Sunday (story, p. 6). ACT I is now taking a break from practice and will begin again in late winter.

Imagica Imagica, our adult team, follows ACT I at 8:00pm. Imagica has room for skaters 21 or older who have passed at least one U.S. Figure Skating test (other than a Basic Skills badge)—adult or standard-track moves in the field, dance, free skate, or pairs. Imagica is hosting a wine-tasting fundraiser in November. Watch for the email invitation!

Team News All four teams will compete at next June’s Theatre On Ice National Competition in , as well as other competitions and performances throughout the season. Imagica and ACT I will compete next April at The Theatre On Ice Nation’s Cup in Spain.

The Club has now added a fifth, introductory-level, Theatre On Ice team. This group has been sharing the ice with Encore, 5:10–5:40pm, and is open to skaters in the Basic Skills program who have passed Basic 4. Any skaters interested in this newly formed introductory team should check out the website: www.skatingacademy.org/info/next-steps/theatre-on-ice

In Memoriam . . .

Edmund ‘Ned’ B. Cabot We note with sadness the passing of Dr. Edmund ‘Ned’ B. Cabot, 69, a long-time member July 21, 1943 – September 1. 2012 of the Club. Ned drowned September 1 off the coast of Newfoundland, when a rogue wave swept him from his yacht.

He was on the final leg of a journey he and friends had pursued over the past seven summers on his sloop, Cielita, that had taken them from Nova Scotia through Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland to the coast of Norway.

Experienced sailors described Ned as “the most careful and responsible sailor” that they ever met. Ned wrote and spoke publicly about his voyages and won a 2012 writing award from The Cruising Club of America, in which he was a longtime member.

A retired surgeon and scion of a Boston Brahmin family, Ned was a lifelong sailor. After retiring from Brigham & Women’s Hospital and teaching at Harvard Medical School, he dedicated himself to philanthropy and sailing. He was the founder of Cabot-Wellington LLC and a trustee of the Cabot Family Charitable Trust and the Godfrey L. Cabot Family Association.

In a statement released by the family, Cabot’s wife described the father of four as a man Ned Cabot with a passion for adventure that he shared with others. “He was good at everything he did and a great teacher.” Peter Morrissey January 15, 1953 – August 3, 2012

Peter A. Morrissey, a dedicated Club volunteer, passed away August 3 at the age of 59, from complications of brain cancer. A noted public relations communicator, professor, entrepreneur, and sportsman, Peter provided pro bono media services for last year's announcement of the Harvard land exchange, as well as for the Skaters’ Ball.

Born, raised and educated in Boston, Peter's successful public relations career spanned more than 32 years. In 2004, PRWeek named Peter as one of the top crisis communications counselors in the nation, describing him as one of the 22 professionals “who should be on the speed dial in a crisis."

In 1999, Peter founded Morrissey & Company, on the premise that building enduring reputations was more valuable to clients than simple awareness-building campaigns, emphasizing that what a company stood for is more important than its product's features or new products.

Peter joined the faculty at Boston University in 2004 as an Associate Professor in the College of Communication, teaching crisis, corporate and negotiation, and conflict resolution courses. An avid athlete, Peter played hockey for Boston University, his alma mater, and also drove the Zamboni during his childhood at The Skating Club of Boston.

Peter also served on numerous boards in the Boston business community including Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries (former Chairman of the Board).

Kevin Dully 1959 – September 20, 2012

Kevin Dully, 53, husband of long-time Club member Laura (Underhill) Dully, succumbed last month to leukemia. Laura Dully is the Club’s Free Skate test chair. Kevin died from complications from his 20 year battle with leukemia. He was always a fighter. Lace Up for Leukemia Skate a thon was born from his wife's, Laura's, love of skating and wanting to something for the leukemia & lymphoma society.
