[Type text] African Americans Fight for the Union The Civil War was a turning point in black history for many reasons. After Lincoln’s issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, free blacks saw their chance to fight for their country. By doing so, African Americans hoped to show their worthiness to be treated as equal citizens. However, African Americans were not exactly welcomed into the Union military with open arms. While slavery was banned in many Northern states, the border states that were fighting for the Union still allowed slavery. In addition, racist sentiments were strong in both the North and the South and many whites were not keen on training African American soldiers. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the recruitment of African Americans into the Union army and Camp William Penn was built as a training facility for black troops. Explore the significance of Camp William Penn as a turning point in African American history in the collections of the Historical Society. WITNESS FOR FREEDOM A Curriculum Guide for Using Primary Documents to teach Abolitionist History By Wendy Kohler and Gaylord Saulsberry Published by The Five College Public School Partnership 97 Spring Street, Amherst, MA 01002 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Witness for Freedom project began in 1995 with the vision of Christine Compston, then Director of the National History Education Network. She approached Mary Alice Wilson at the Five College Public School Partnership with the idea of developing an institute for social studies teachers that would introduce them to the documents recently published by C. Peter Ripley in Witness for Freedom: African American Voices on Race, Slavery, and Emancipation. Together they solicited the participation of David Blight, Professor of History at Amherst College, and author of Frederick Douglass’ Civil War: Keeping Faith in Jubilee. The Witness for Freedom Summer Institute was held in 1996 under their direction and involved twenty teachers from Western Massachusetts. The project was made possible by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives with additional support from the Nan and Matilda Heydt Fund of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. The publication of this guide by Wendy Kohler and Gaylord Saulsberry of the Amherst Public Schools offers specific guidance for Massachusetts teachers and district personnel concerned with aligning classroom instruction with the state curriculum frameworks. The Five College Public School Partnership thanks all of the above for their involvement in this project. “LIBERTY’S GREAT AUXILIARY”: MUSIC AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR by CHRISTIAN MCWHIRTER A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2009 Copyright Christian McWhirter 2009 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Music was almost omnipresent during the American Civil War. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans. -

Army, retired ) Grand-nephew of General Reynolds I CAME here to give a talk on John Fulton Reynolds, and as I have sat here this evening I really feel superfluous. The stu- dents of this school have certainly outdone themselves in their essays on that subject, and I feel that what I may add is more or less duplication. For the sake of the record I will do my best to make a brief talk, and to try to fill in some of the gaps in Reynolds' life which have been left out because some of them have not yet been published. As you have heard, John Reynolds was the second son of the nine children of John Reynolds and Lydia Moore. Lydia Moore's ancestry was entirely Irish. Her father came from Rathmelton, Ireland, served as a captain at Brandywine with the 3rd Penn- sylvania. Infantry of the Continental Line, where he was wounded; also served at Germantown and at Valley Forge, and was then retired. Her mother was Irish on both sides of her family, and the Reynolds family itself was Irish, but, of course, the Huguenot strain came in through John Reynolds' own mother, who was a LeFever and a great-granddaughter of Madam Ferree of Paradise. Our subject was born on September 21, 1820, at 42 West King Street, Lancaster, and subsequently went to the celebrated school at Lititz, conducted by the grandfather of the presiding officer of this meeting, Dr. Herbert H. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Altoona was his, and fairly won”: President Lincoln and the Altoona Governors’ Conference, September 1862 Abstract This article explores the long-forgotten Altoona Conference of 1862, when nearly a dozen Union governors met at the Civil War's darkest hour to discuss war strategy and, ultimately, reaffirm their support for the Union cause. This article examines and questions the conventional view of the conference as a challenge to President Lincoln's efficacy as the nation's leader. Rather, the article suggests that Lincoln may have actually welcomed the conference and had his own designs for how it might bolster his political objectives. -

Tremel n 1848 the slave-turned-abolitionist Frederick Douglass wrote in Ithe National Anti-Slavery Standard newspaper that Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, “more than any other [city] in our land, holds the destiny of our people.”1 Yet Douglass was also one of the biggest critics of the city’s treatment of its black citizens. He penned a censure in 1862: “There is not perhaps anywhere to be found a city in which prejudice against color is more rampant than Philadelphia.”2 There were a number of other critics. On March 4, 1863, the Christian Recorder, the official organ of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, commented after race riots in Detroit, “Even here, in the city of Philadelphia, in many places it is almost impossible for a respectable colored per- son to walk the streets without being assaulted.”3 To be sure, Philadelphia’s early residents showed some mod- erate sympathy with black citizens, especially through the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, but as the nineteenth century progressed, Philadelphia witnessed increased racial tension and a number of riots.
