In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge.' E-mail : [email protected] Résumé Les collections du Musée de Gaillac renferment un important fond de fossiles provenant du Jurassique de Normandie. Ceux-ci furent recueillis à la fin du 19ème siècle par le Dr. Philadelphe Thomas profitant de ses bonnes relations avec le paléontologue normand Eugène Eudes-Deslongchamps. On y trouve en particulier un important lot de Brachiopodes déterminés et étiquetés par cet éminent spécialiste des Brachiopodes jurassiques. La disparition de la collection originale du Musée de Caen sous les bombes des alliés en 1944 en fait toute la valeur car les collections du Musée de Gaillac renferment un certain nombre de topotypes (ou néotypes) éventuels. La présente publication donne une brève description des espèces de Brachiopodes jurassiques conservées à Gaillac. Ces descriptions sont précédées d’une synonymie précisant la diagnose originale de chaque espèce, ainsi que la référence à une récente publication, ce qui permet au lecteur de retrouver toutes les données relatives à ces espèces (variabilité morphologique, caractères internes, âges et répartitions géographiques, principales figurations par les auteurs successifs). -

page - Paleo Lab 06 - The Cambrian Explosion of Life An Introduction to Index Fossils CLASSIFICATION AND TAXONOMY Geologists follow the lead of biologists in the classification and naming of organisms (taxonomy after taxon = name). Since its introduction early in the 18th century, the system devised by Linnaeus has been used to categorize organisms and to affix a formal name to each species. Major classification categories or groupings are listed below on the left with an example using the species of the common house cat to show how the system may be used: KINGDOM Animalia PHYLUM Chordata CLASS Mammalia ORDER Carnivora FAMILY Felidae GENUS Felis SPECIES domestica The basic unit of the system is the species, and each category above it includes the divisions below. A two part (binomial) formal designation for each species, following the scheme of Linnaeus, is composed of the capitalized name of the genus (plural = genera) followed by the uncapitalized name of the species (plural = species). Note that the binomial is printed in a special way (italics) to distinguish it. After at least 5000 years of domestication, man has drawn out of that species such a variety of traits through selection and cross-breeding that it may be more difficult to realize that all such cats belong to the same species than it is to recognize that they share the same genus with the lion (Felis leo), leopard (Felis pardus), jaguar (Felis onca), tiger (Felis tigris), and the cougar or puma (Felis concolor). Binazadeh* Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, Shahid Bahonar University, Kerman, Islamic Republic of Iran Received: 8 June 2016 / Revised: 25 September 2016 / Accepted: 25 December 2016 Abstract Brachiopod faunas from the Aptian- Cenomanian Vezk section in southwestern Iran comprise ten species in six genera, namely Sellithyris cenomanensis, Sellithyris tornacensis, Sellithyris phaseolina, Phaseolina phaseolina, Tropeothyris sp., Concinnithyris subundata, Kingena arenosa, Cyclothyris difformis, Cyclothyris sp. and Cyclothyris compressa. All species are recorded for the first time from the lower Cretaceous of Vezk section (South of Yasuj). These deposits are composed of an alternation of green marls and thin layers of yellow shaly or sandy limestone, which overlain by thick bedded black limestone. The thickness of these deposits are 74 meters, which covers the Jurassic sediments, while its upper boundary ends with erosion surface that covered by Neogene deposits. These deposits consist of different fossil groups such as brachiopods, echinoids, corals, gastropods and orbitolinids that confirm the Aptian- Cenomanian ages for these sediments. The fauna assemblages suggest at shallow and suitable environment prevailed during the deposition of the strata. Rhynchonellide brachiopods, with more than 500 extinct genera but only 19 extant genera represented today, provide an opportunity to explore the factors that produce contentious phylogenetic signal across datasets, as previous phylogenetic hypotheses generated from molecular sequence data bear little agreement with those constructed using morphological characters. -

The aim of the Association is to promote research in Palaeontology and its allied sciences by (a) holding public meetings for the reading of original papers and the delivery of lectures, (b) demonstration and publication, and (c) by such other means as the Council may determine. Council has taken a significant step under categories (b) and (c) above, by committing significant funds, relative to spending on research and travel, to Outreach and Education projects (see p. 27 for more details). This is a chance for the membership of the Association to explore a range of ways of widening public awareness and participation in palaeontology that is led by palaeontologists. Not by universities, not by research councils or other funding bodies with broader portfolios. -
