A Queer Chicana/o Ethics of Representation Rasquache Camp in the Novels of Rechy and Luna Lemus Jason A. Bartles Abstract: This essay places into dialogue two queer Chicana/o novels, John Rechy’s City of Night (1963) and Felicia Luna Lemus’s Trace Elements of Random Tea Parties (2003), in order to explore their common aesthetic sensibility. This sensibility is what I call rasquache camp, a stance that arises from the complex entanglement of rasquachismo’s utilitarian aspects of making do and the funky irreverence of camp, without resulting in a dialectical sublation between the two. This essay intervenes in the recent debates on the appropriateness of using rasquachismo as a tool for studying (queer) Chicana/o cultural productions. Informed by rasquache camp, I contend that these two novels develop and employ an ethics of representing marginalized queer and Chicana/o subjects who face insurmountable adversity by overturning the paradigms of morality and literary value, not from idealized, theoretical stances but by making use of imperfect, often cobbled-together solutions. As the future-oriented projects of these novels come to a close, both texts consciously fail to achieve their goals, but this failure allows the future to remain open to new and better aesthetic and ethical interventions by others. Forty years separates the publication of John Rechy’s City of Night (1963) and Felicia Luna Lemus’s Trace Elements of Random Tea Parties (2003). This period saw important developments in the cultural history of Chicana/o and queer peoples, including the rise of the Chicano civil rights movement, the Stonewall riots, and the increasing visibility of literature, art, and criticism by and about queer Chicana/os, with the groundbreaking publication of acclaimed works by Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherríe Moraga. -

Style Sheet for Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies Articles submitted to Aztlán are accepted with the understanding that the author will agree to all style changes made by the copyeditor unless the changes drastically alter the author’s meaning. This style sheet is intended for use with articles written in English. Much of it also applies to those written in Spanish, but authors planning to submit Spanish-language texts should check with the editors for special instructions. 1. Reference Books Aztlán bases its style on the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, with some modifications. Spelling follows Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition. This sheet provides a guide to a number of style questions that come up frequently in Aztlán. 2. Titles and Subheads 2a. Article titles No endnotes are allowed on titles. Acknowledgments, information about the title or epigraph, or other general information about an article should go in an unnumbered note at the beginning of the endnotes (see section 12). 2b. Subheads Topical subheads should be used to break up the text at logical points. In general, Aztlán does not use more than two levels of subheads. Most articles have only one level. Authors should make the hierarchy of subheads clear by using large, bold, and/or italic type to differentiate levels of subheads. For example, level-1 and level-2 subheads might look like this: Ethnocentrism and Imperialism in the Imperial Valley Social and Spatial Marginalization of Latinos Do not set subheads in all caps. Do not number subheads. No endnotes are allowed on subheads. -

“I live in this liminal state between worlds, between realities, between systems of knowledge, between symbology systems.” “Vivo en este estado liminal entre mundos, entre realidades, entre sistemas de conocimiento, entre sistemas de simbología.” —Gloria Anzaldúa, Interviews (2000, 268) TRANSLATION AS “TRANS-INTERPRETATION”: Notes on Transforming the Book Methodology of the Oppressed into Metodología de la emancipación Chela Sandoval Methodology of the Oppressed is idea, method and book made, remade, translated and trans-interpreted; consequences of movement across histories, geographies, and peoples.1 One of these makings shifted the title of the book Methodology of the Oppressed (2000) into Metodología de la emancipación (2016)—referred to in what follows as MoTo and MoLe. This particular shift points readers directly to the profound transformations in meaning that occur whenever language undergoes translation. One happy consequence of the transformation of MoTo into MoLe shift is that one of MoTo’s primary reasons for being rises to the surface. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) was founded in 1969 with a commitment to foster multi-disciplinary research as part of the overall mission of the university. It is one of four ethnic studies centers within the Institute of American Cultures (IAC), which reports to the UCLA Office of the Chancellor. The CSRC is also a co-founder and serves as the official archive of the Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR, est. 1983), a consortium of Latino research centers that now includes twenty-five institutions dedicated to increasing the number of scholars and intellectual leaders conducting Latino-focused research. The CSRC houses a library and special collections archive, an academic press, externally-funded research projects, community-based partnerships, competitive grant and fellowship programs, and several gift funds. It maintains a public programs calendar on campus and at local, national, and international venues. The CSRC also maintains strategic research partnerships with UCLA schools, departments, and research centers, as well as with major museums across the U.S. The CSRC holds six (6) positions for faculty that are appointed in academic departments. These appointments expand the CSRC’s research capacity as well as the curriculum in Chicana/o and Latina/o studies across UCLA. -

Pérez, Chair This dissertation examines the Texas Mexican musical genre known as conjunto and its concomitant social world. In this work I situate conjunto within a broader context of Mexican American cultural production, Texas Mexican popular music, and the shared histories of the U.S.- Mexico borderlands. As a social history, the dissertation traces the development of the genre and its practitioners across the twentieth century to the present. I examine interactions of power; expressions of identity; and constructions of race, class, and gender through movement (dance), performance (instrumentation and playing), and place (the dancehall or nite club) within and around San Antonio and South Texas. I argue that conjunto is an embodiment of Xicanx thought and knowledge, an everyday act of resistance and reaffirmation. 1 Dedicación -

Politics of an Indigenous Landscape: The Political Aesthetics of Delilah Montoya’s, Desire Lines, Baboquivari Peak, Arizona by Mark Esquivel A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Approved April 2014 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Amelia Malagamba, Chair Thomas Swensen Desirée Garcia ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2014 ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to investigate the political aesthetics of Delilah Montoya's photographic landscape image, Desire Lines, Baboquivari Peak, Arizona (2004), an image drawn from a larger photo-documentary project by Montoya and Orlando Lara titled, Sed: Trail of Thirst (2004). This thesis employs Jacques Rancière’s concept of the aesthetic regime to identify how Desire Lines functions as a political work of art, or what Rancière would consider “aesthetic art.” This thesis shows that the political qualities of Desire Lines’s work contrast with the aesthetic regime of art and systems in the U.S. nation state that have attempted to erase an indigenous presence. Thomás Ybarra-Frausto’s and Amalia Mesa-Bains’ definitions of Rasquachismo, as well as Gloria Anzalúda’s concept of Nepantla, are used to assist in identifying the specific politics of Montoya's work. The first portion of this thesis investigates the image's political aesthetic within the context of the politics of art, and the second portion addresses the image’s political qualities within the framework of the politics of the everyday life. This thesis shows that Desire Lines, Baboquivari Peak, Arizona reveals a Chicana/o aesthetic that challenges the dominant paradigm of postmodernism; furthermore, viewing the content of the image through the concept of Nepantla allows for a political reading which highlights the work’s capacity to challenge the Eurocentric view of land in the U.S. -

My dad, a construction worker, made sure of it. In one of my earliest memories, I am sitting with overalls and a hat on in the back of my dad’s work truck surrounded by buckets. My job is to pass him tools. While other kids are identifying colors and shapes, I’m picking out wrenches, hammers, squares, and levels. I can stick my hand into a bucket of odd nails, pull one out, and tell you immediately if it’s for masonry, drywall, or roofing. On the way home, we stop at Pic-Quick for a Coke and a bag of peanuts. These are my happiest days. Building is directly tied to my geo and eco politics. [i] My body is marked by the physical scars of labor and shaped by the emotions it produces. It is my earliest form of education and serves as my introduction to rasquache [ii] Rasquache is a movement popular in chicanx art, cultural, and literary studies, but hasn’t gained much attention in cultural rhetorics. Tomas Ybarra-Frausto defines rasquache as “an underdog perspective” that stresses making do “in an environment always on the edge of coming apart [where] things are held together with spit, grit and movidas” (5).
