The Vicars Voice – October 2019 How many of us have at some time or another, had that still small voice which, when a task needs doing, either around the house, or garden, or even just for ones’ self, you get that overwhelming feeling that “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak”, and you manage to think to yourself that, well, it’ll be ok, I’ll get “a round to it”!! And you manage to find a hundred and one excuses why to put the task off.

Whilst out and about, I came across the following poem in another church magazine, and for which I will make no excuses for copying….it’s very amusing, and whilst some of the excuses given are tongue in cheek…(hopefully!!!! says the Vicar who has her next sermon to write and was planning on beginning with a funny story!!) they will touch a nerve with many who have been coming to church “forever”…and perhaps also for those who make…. albeit excellent and feasible excuses…but excuses all the same, for not coming to church!

Excuses A is the Auntie who must come to tea B is the Bed which won’t release me C is for country, we do need fresh air D is for Dinner which mum has prepared E for Extremes – too high or too low F for my Feelings, when they’re right I’ll go G is the garden much nearer God’s heart H for the Housework I really must start I for Intruders who sit in my pew St Felix of Dunwich J for the Jokes which the vicar thinks new! As we head towards the colder months it’s crucial that we work together as a community to support our more vulnerable residents. Following the shocking news of the deaths in Woodbridge’s sheltered housing we want to ensure that nothing like that ever happens in Rendlesham.

Getting to know your neighbours keeps us all safe and looking out for friends who are elderly, visibly disabled, invisibly disabled, physically unwell (both chronically and in the short term), have mental health struggles, are lonely or going through a bad patch in anyway, makes us stronger as a community. When you have a trusted friendship you are more able to talk about any problems and work out ways to help.

Did you know about the Rendlesham Good Neighbour Scheme? You can contact them any time to request their help with day to day tasks for yourself or someone in need (with their permission of course!) Dog walking, transportation, prescription collection, one off maintenance and cleaning and much more. Volunteers are trained, DBS checked and discreet. Contact them on : 07486551004 or [email protected]

They also have a Facebook Group which can be found by searching ‘Rendlesham Community Neighbour Scheme’.

We can all be vigilant by watching out for signs that someone might be at risk:  Post not retrieved from letter box  Curtains remaining in the same position  Lights not coming on in the evening  Milk not taken in  Bins not being put out  Changes in routine you observe

If you think someone is at immediate risk call 999.

If you have concerns but don’t believe it to be an emergency call 111. Rendlesham Parish Newsletter, September/October 2019 Page 21 See Tidal Energy in Action at Woodbridge Tide Mill this half term

You can substitute every second drink with That is the message, as Suffolk County Council launches water, non-alcoholic beer, coffee or a soft drink. a new campaign looking at our relationship with alcohol.  A great way to avoid overdoing things is to drink with your main meal only. And keep that bottle off Four short films have been produced following the stories the table. Just pour one glass and put it away! of characters (‘Billy Binge’, ‘Tellybox Trish’, ‘Big Match Barry’ and ‘My Time Mandy’), speaking about when and where they drink alcohol. The films cover different habits when it comes to alcohol consumption; weekend binge drinking, drinking at home, drinking as a reward, and excessive drinking to celebrate an event or occasion, such as a football match.

The campaign offers guidance and advice about how much is too much, the benefits of reducing alcohol intake and the small changes people can make to their drinking habits, which can make a big difference to their mental and physical wellbeing.

Evidence suggests direct links between alcohol and heart and liver disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. Alcohol is also highly calorific, contributing to weight gain. It can also influence the quality of sleep and take its toll on physical appearance over time.

The campaign highlights that as well as the health benefits, reducing alcohol consumption can also bring social benefits, such as being able to spend more quality time with your loved ones, saving money for something more meaningful and losing weight.

Some of the small changes suggested by the campaign are:  Did you know that you drink more slowly when you're sitting than when you're standing? So, pull up a chair, take it easy and savour your drink.  Rounds make it very easy to drink more than you planned. When it's your round, why not quietly buy yourself a soft drink or a lower-strength Page 22 Rendlesham Parish Newsletter, September/October 2019

Woodbridge and District Lions Club continue to support organisations and initiatives to raise awareness about the issues of single-use plastics, litter and waste in general.

The Club has provided fifteen schools, in and around the Woodbridge areas, with a book from the Wild Tribe Heroes collection which are written by acclaimed children’s author Ellie Jackson with the aim of inspiring and engaging a whole generation of children across Suffolk with this issue and how they can get involved and help tackle the problem in their community.

The photo (above) shows Roy Benton President of Woodbridge Lions handing over the book to Head Teacher Alun Davies of Melton Community Primary School with pupils Amy and Joshua

In a separate environmental initiative the Club have funded the Transition Woodbridge group to enable them to open a Repair Café at St John’s Church this month with a view to reducing the number of items which end up in landfill by repairing them. The café will be open on the first Monday of each month.

Two infidels once sat on a railroad train, discussing the life of Christ. One of them said, “I think an interesting romance could be written about him.” The other replied, “And you are just the man to write it. Tear down the prevailing sentiment about His divinity If you use an advert and paint Him as a man—a man among men.”

The suggestion was acted upon and the romance please mention that written. The man who made the suggestion was Colonel Ingersoll, the noted atheist. The writer was you saw it in the General Lew Wallace, and the book was called Ben Hur.

Rendlesham In the process of constructing the life of Christ, Gen. Wallace found himself facing the greatest life ever Newsletter lived on earth. The more he studied, the more he was convinced Christ was more than man. Until one day, he was forced to cry “Verily, this was the Son of God!”

It’s interesting that the centurion soldier spoke these same words after watching Jesus die on the cross, “Verily, this was the Son of God!”
