Another set has been depos- ited in the University of Georgia Herbarium (GA). Replicate specimens have been dis- tributed to other herbaria as part of the GA exchange program. In the Plant List, the no- menclature and taxonomy follow primarily that of Radford et al. (1968), Godfrey and Wooten (1979, 198 1), USDA list (1982), and Coile and Jones (1985). Since Radford et al. provided the most complete manual for the area, names in their manual will be given in brackets ifthey differ from those in this plant list. A few omissions are bound to occur in any catalog of the flora of a particular area. It is likely that additional species may nat- urally colonize the island or become estab- lished because of the transport of materials such as seeds or hay. Also, deletions may occur for various reasons. We hope the checklist will be useful to persons utilizing the facilities ofthe Foundation and will serve as a stimulus for future botanical research. VEGETATION: COLONIAL PERIOD AND PRESENT DAY3 At the time of European settlement, the island probably consisted of(1) coastal strand vegetation facing the Atlantic Ocean, (2) successional dune vegetation on Holocene sediments, (3) tidal salt marsh on recently submerged sediments, (4) maritime forest dominated by live oak (Quercus virginiana) on Pleistocene formations, (5) small stands of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and slash pine (P. elliottii) about old clearings by Amer- ican Indians and natural openings, (6) pond pine forests (P. serotina) on poorly drained Pleistocene substrates, (7) interdunal fresh- water marshes on Holocene formations, and (8) hickory (Carya glabra)-dominated com- munities on sandy ridges of the Pleistocene part of the island.

    Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

[email protected] ABSTRACT Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystems exhibit high species diversity and are major contributors to the extraordinary levels of regional biodiversity and endemism found in the North American Coastal Plain Province. These forests require frequent fire return inter- vals (every 2–3 years) to maintain this rich diversity. In 2009, a floristic inventory was conducted at the Lake Thoreau Environmental Center owned by the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Center is located on 106 ha with approximately half cov- ered by a 100+ year old longleaf pine forest. When the 2009 survey was conducted, fire had been excluded for over 20 years resulting in a dense understory dominated by woody species throughout most of the forest. The 2009 survey recorded 282 vascular plant species. Prescribed fire was reintroduced in 2009 and reapplied again in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. A new survey was conducted in 2019 to assess the effects of prescribed fire on floristic diversity. The new survey found an additional 268 species bringing the total number of plants species to 550. This study highlights the changes in species diversity that occurs when fire is reintroduced into a previously fire-suppressed system and the need to monitor sensitive areas for changes in species composition.

All study plots were established in l4-year-old longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) stands. Treatments conSisted of biennial burns in winter, spring, and summer, plus a no-burn check. Objectives of the current study were to determine composition and structure of understory plant communities after 22 years of seasonal burning, identify changes since last sampling in 1982, arid assess the structure of the communities that stabilized under each treatment regime. There were 114 species on biennial winter~burned plots, compared to 104 on spring- and summer-burned and 84 with no burning. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths.

  • Innocence (Houstonia Procumbens)

Although often overlooked, the diminutive white flowers and verdurous leaves of Innocence are a welcome sight for anyone with the winter blues. This low-growing perennial creeps along the floors of many open habitats such as pine flatwoods, sandhills, scrub and ruderal areas throughout Florida. Photo by Mary Keim Innocence goes largely unnoticed until late winter and early spring when it blooms with lovely white four-lobed flowers on a tidy carpet of green ovate leaves. Although its solitary flowers are only 4–6 mm in diameter, the plant can form a miniature wildflower garden. The leaves are oppositely arranged. Stems are prostrate. Seeds are born in tiny capsules. The species epithet procumbens is from the Latin procumbo, meaning “to lie down.” Family: Rubiaceae (Madder or coffee family) Native range: Throughout Florida To see where natural populations of Innocence have been vouchered, visit www.florida.plantatlas.usf.edu. Hardiness: Zones 8–10 Soil: Moderately moist soils Exposure: Sunny, open areas to light shade Growth habit: 1” tall, spreading up to 12” Propagation: Seed Garden tips: Innocence is rarely for sale in nurseries, but is easy to grow and can be used as a slow-spreading winter groundcover in a lightly mulched or open area.
