To the best interest of this research two most important reforms were: 1) With rolling-out of the two new telecom networks (Ooredoo and Telenors in August, 2014), most people will own a mobile phone in the coming days and will have some level of digital and information literacy to use the internet effectively. 2) The development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which have been less focused upon until now and is crucial for the country’s development by creating job opportunities for the local population. To support these enterprises, Myanmar’s government has removed many restrictions on businesses, abolished a range of monopolies, reduced some taxes, eased import-export restrictions and passed new Foreign Investment Laws on November, 2012.2 BOTTOM OF THE PYRAMID MICRO ENTREPRENEURS This report presents the findings of a study conducted for LIRNEasia on the information and communication needs of urban poor micro-entrepreneurs (MEs) in Myanmar. Qualitiative research methods were used to study 124 urban and peri-urban MEs. More on methodology can be found in section 1.3. The reason for focusing on MEs was two-fold; firstly, MEs are most likely to have higher livelihood gains through Information and Communication technologies (ICTs). This can be supported with an excerpt from the 2002 Guide to ICTs for Development by Sood3 which says that “ICTs represent an unprecedented opportunity to make new knowledge, services, and op- portunities available in underserved areas. First, in the process of purging prior Hindu and Tantric influences, second, with the introduction of Mahāyāna Buddhism through Risshō-Kōsei-kai; and, third, in responding to recent Buddhist extremism in Myanmar. The article also shows how “bad Buddhism”—for instance, Buddhist extremism in Myanmar—impacts Buddhists in other countries. For Bangladeshi Buddhists, claiming their identity and practices involves a process of both connecting with the “good” and distancing from the “bad.” Keywords: Bangladesh; Rissho-Kōshei Kai; Rohingya; global religion he Buddhist community forms a very small minority in Bangladesh, only approximately one percent of the total population of 160 million. Bangladeshi Buddhists mainly have been following Theravāda Buddhism, after a reformation initiated by the Arakanese Buddhist Tmonk Sāramedha Mahāthera and Buddhist priests of Chittagong, when Bangladesh was still a region of British India (Chakma 2011; Khan 2003; Chaudhuri 1982). Since the reformation movement began in 1856, the culture and practices of Bangladeshi Buddhists have been reshaped by many transnational influences. I argue in this paper that transnational connections have played a significant role in the formation of Bangladeshi Buddhist identity and practices, in the way they came to define “good” and “bad” forms of Buddhism. Bangladeshi Buddhists’ connections with Buddhists of other countries required them to be receptive to cultures and texts from outside which were then fused into the existing literary, geographical, economic, and political conditions of Bangladesh.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract Ethnicity and Environment: ‘Tribal9 Culture and the State in Bangladesh This thesis investigates the current predicament of the people of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in Bangladesh, a population with significant cultural differentiation from the mainstream Bengali population. Dealing with the issues of their survival in the forest and their quest for identity, the research explores how their ethnicity and environment are intertwined. This is examined in the context of state policies towards non-Bengali ethnic minorities in the CHT. The study identifies sources of diversity at the micro level and the forces that create conditions for ‘unity in diversity’ at the macro level. One is the assertion of ‘self-image’ on the basis of cultural polarity within the confines of a multi-ethnic locality.

Organizational formation of Kachin administrative pattern, different nature of judicial administration, different classification between criminal cases and civil suits are also discussed. The laws, regulations, rulings and judgments of some important orders were issued by senior Kachin elders. Before colonial administration was well set up, there appeared three Kachin administrative systems: Gumchying Gumtsa, Gumsa and Gumlau . Pros and cons of this local ruling system was the most complicated in nature. During the Colonial Period, Kachin administrative pattern was dominated by the customary law. This dissertation also examines the continuities and changes of legal administration, status of ruling class and society. " They are a people with their own culture, folklore, historical traditions and even their own national script. Anthropo- logically, 2' they belong to the people of South-East Asia. I will focus in this paper on the marriage ceremony and popular rituals of Chakma Buddhists in Bangladesh in brief. 1 . Social Rules of marriage ceremony According to the social rules of Chakmas, marriage" is prohibited between a man and his niece, (sister's daughter), and a woman and her nephew (brother's son). A man can in no circumstances marry the elder sister of his wife. Though polygamy is not prohibited, it is discouraged, and generally monogamy is prevalent. Child marriage is prohibited and highly condemned, and divorce is an extremely rare. Both social and court marriage occur, : but social marriage is more popular than court marriage. 4' 2. Popular Rituals 5) Nowadays, final selection depends upon the choice of the couple. However, consent of parents is the main principle of marriage. For selecting a-bride, the groom's father must visit the house of the bride's father at least thrice. Each time must take with him cakes, co- conuts and bottles of wine. On his last visit he must take other gifts as well. The groom's father must hand the bottle (s) of wine over to the bride's father saying : "There is a nice tree growing up besides your house.
