“Salute to the Big Bands”
The Swing Era (also frequently referred to as the “Big Band Era”) was the period of time (around 1935–1946) when big band swing music was the most popular music in the United States. Though this was its most popular period, the music had actually been around since the late 1920s and early 1930s, being played by black bands led by such artists as Duke Ellington, Count Basie Bennie Moten, Cab Calloway, and Fletcher Henderson, and white bands from the 1920s led by the likes of Russ Morgan and Isham Jones. The era’s beginning is sometimes dated from “the King of Swing” Benny Goodman’s performance at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles on August 21, 1935, bringing the music to the rest of the country. 1930s also became the era of other great soloists: the tenor saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Chu Berry; the alto saxophonists Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges; the drummers Gene Krupa, Cozy Cole and Sid Catlett; the pianists Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson; the trumpeters Roy Eldridge, Bunny Berigan, and Rex Stewart.
Taryn Newborn, Vocalist
Born in Memphis and raised in Atlanta, Taryn Newborne is rooted deeply in the soil of a rich musical heritage. She has often said that she loves music so much that it hurts her feelings. Her musical influences are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Anita Baker, Kurt Elling, Aretha Franklin, Joe Sample, Stevie Wonder, Take Six, Phineas Newborn Jr. and Calvin Newborn.
Taryn’s love for swing era dancing led to her being a staple performer in the Lindy Hop scene at events such as The International Lindy Hop Championships in Washington, D.C. and Beantown Lindy Hop Camp in Boston, Massachusetts. Her band Taryn Newborne and the Real Deal are regularly called upon to play for dancers at Georgia Tech, Auburn University, Kennesaw State University, University of Georgia, Fernbank Museum, and Monday night swing dance staple Hot Jam.
Either with her own ensemble or as guest soloist, Taryn has performed at many of Atlanta’s jazz venues including Churchill Grounds and Cafe 290, with The Joe Gransden Big Band.
