GC OPEN GIRL KO NETBALL TEAM DEFEAT HENLEY POWERHOUSE

Last Friday, the Gleeson Open Girls Netball Team met Henley High School in their first match of the Statewide Knockout Competition, held at the Golden Grove Recreation Centre. We know Henley as a formidable opponent whom we have had some hard fought games against, and despite losing a valuable player in Paris Sinclair (11 FSCAM) to injury in recent weeks, we went into the game throughout the game but it seemed Member Karlee Turner (11 FSRUT) who with great confidence and a strong Gleeson slowly gained the upper hand. supported the girls so well on the day. team made up of girls in Years 10 -12. At our recent College Assembly, we had an opportunity to announce and present our newly appointed Year 7 Class Representatives. Term 1 provided the chance for students to transition to Gleeson and nominations for Year 7 Student Leadership positions were called for at the end of the term. We shortlisted from a long line of applicants, and then interviewed students to further refine the list. Through this process, we congratulate the following Year 7 Class Representatives appointed: 7 BAR > Charlotte Duncan James Harding 7 HEW > Zara Fergusson Keegan Mitchell 7 PUT > Jett Darmody Jack Lindsay Our youngest Student Leaders have hit the ground running, already involved with the TTG Regional Leaders forum, attending meetings and are now involved in planning events for Term 3 and transitioning our new students into the College. Their student biographies will be published in The Globe over the coming weeks.

Mr Shannon Bertram, Assistant Principal - Student Development

This term, Miss Curtis’ Year 7 Home Economics Class has been putting their newly developed sewing skills to the test by constructing their own BBQ aprons. This task required students to use a pattern to pin and cut out their material, before hemming it using the sewing machine. Students then attached a pocket and straps. Although some students came across challenges at times, the class demonstrated excellent teamwork to support one another, ensuring everyone successfully completed their aprons. The class did a wonderful job and are all proud of their final product!

YEAR 7 HOME ECONOMICS Miss Ashlee Curtis, Year 7 Home Ec Teacher YEAR 7 + YEAR 8 JAPANESE > Restaurant Role Plays Extend Learning

Over the past few weeks, the Year 7 and Year 8 Japanese Classes have been researching Japanese food and restaurant culture. After learning some key vocabulary, watching some interesting and informative YouTube clips, and developing an understanding of some useful grammatical patterns, the students in each class were asked to form small groups and script a simple role play. Students would be able to make use of self-introduction phrases, restaurant language, cultural expressions used when eating and salutations in the role play. To add to the authenticity of their presentation, some students also made a personalised menu that showed a connection to those found in Japan, making use of images of each dish, the name of each dish and a price detailed in Japanese yen. Most groups were able to create an informative script that lasted around two minutes and distributed roles evenly. Many employed inquisitorial language to enquire about the food they were selecting, offered opinions, conveyed excitement based on their orders and even incorporated humor, which is hard to convey when you have only been learning a language for about six months. The Japanese faculty also provided a number of props brought back from Japan to add further authenticity and engagement with the task, which many loved as it aided them to become their character and use challenging language with less inhibition. With the current cohort of junior Japanese students making the transition to Italian next week, this assessment will remain a highlight of the semester’s learning.

Mr Josh Boden, Japanese Teacher YEAR 8 RE CLASS MASSES > ‘Equality’, ‘Friendship’ + ‘Doing Your Best’

On Monday, Monsignor Swann joined our Year 8 students to help celebrate Class Masses at the College. The Year 8’s have been working over the past few weeks in preparation for the masses, picking their own themes including, ‘Equality’, ‘Friendship’ and ‘Doing Your Best’. On Thursday 7 June, the Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class prepared for, and catered, a French-themed ‘High Tea’ function for 36 special guests. On the day the students served guests a selection of food on high tea stands; the bottom tier with cold savoury, including mini smoked salmon sandwiches, gouyeres (cheese puffs) and capsicum and spinach tarts. The middle tier served hot savoury consisting of quiche lorraine, pumpkin soup and tuna vol-au-vents. The top tier was made up of a range of traditional French sweets such as; chocolate eclairs, macarons, lemon curd tartlets and chocolate mousse cakes. All students’ worked extremely well together to help ensure the smooth running of the event and they really enjoyed seeing their careful planning come together successfully. The function enabled students to learn about the importance of teamwork as well as how to work under pressure. Students were responsible for creating individual time plans to follow on the day, to ensure all jobs were successfully completed, and in a timely manner. On the day of the function, students were split up into groups; front of house, back of house and drinks. All students worked very hard at their given job to create a great atmosphere for the customers. All guests were well serviced, extremely happy with the delicious **MORE PHOTOS ON NEXT PAGE** food served, and enjoyed the interpretation of the French-themed High Tea. Many guests happily took home copies of the recipes so they could recreate the dishes at home. Congratulations to the Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class for all their hard work and effort!

On Wednesday, 18 Year 7 boys ventured to Tea Tree Gully Football Club to participate in the TTG District SAPSASA Football Carnival. The team played five games on the day and represented the College with great pride. The boys had a terrific carnival, winning four of their five games, including a 15-point win against joint carnival champions Highbury Primary School. 14 schools were represented on the day and Gleeson were joint runners up with St Francis Xavier’s, Fairview Park Primary School and Ridgehaven Primary School. Golden Grove Primary School and Highbury were joint champions winning five games (Highbury played six games). The entire side played excellent team footy. Liam Awramenko (7 PUT) had a terrific carnival playing the majority of his footy across half back. His reading of the play was sensational and he rebounded the ball well. Liam Isaacson (7 PUT) was his partner in crime! His intercept marking was outstanding and he rarely gave away a possession to his opponent. Jack Lindsay (7 PUT), Talan Cooper (7 PUT), Bailey Hume (7 HEW) and Tyson Hartmann (7 PUT) also had a terrific carnival. The Year 8&9 KO Netball Team made its way down to Cedar College for a tough first round pool of the Statewide Competition against St Peter’s Girls College and Cedar last Wednesday. Our first game saw us up against St Peter’s Girls and the team, coached by Darren Saul and captained by Charlotte Nenke (9 FMTER), took to the court with enthusiasm, getting a quick start. Unfortunately, the girls found it challenging to restrict the opposition mid court intensity and offensive drive consistently throughout the game, and ended up recording a loss. However, the team was not prepared to lose both games, and with all girls getting a run on the court, Gleeson entered Game #2 against home-side Cedar with renewed energy. The girls played well, supported each other, and came away with a well- earnt 10-goal victory. Congratulations to all the girls involved as they fought hard and were unlucky to not progress through to Round 2. Thank you to Darren Saul and the parents that came along to support and encourage the team on the day.

Miss Rachel Staffin, Sports Development Coordinator YEAR 10 KO NETBALL TEAM BOOK ROUND 2 BERTH AFTER HENLEY WIN

The first round of the Year 10 KO Netball Competition between Gleeson College, Parafield Gardens High School and Henley High School was contested last week on possibly the windiest day of the week! Our Year 10 girls had big shoes to fill as last year’s team took out the title as premiers, and they got off to a great start. Despite the outdoor conditions, the team commanded the lead from the first centre pass. Smooth transitioning at both ends of the court, seamless passing and some impressive turnovers saw Gleeson dominate in the first game against hosts Parafield Gardens HS, the final score 57-7. The second game against our arch nemesis Henley HS was a slightly different story. Always a very tough opponent, Henley’s height and equally smooth play meant our Gleeson girls needed to step it up another level. Tied after the first quarter at 6-6, the second quarter saw us take a small lead 10-13 going into the second half. Our shooters were hot (wind? what wind?), combining well in the circle with help from our mid court, and defensively the girls capitalised on Henley’s stray throws. A solid third quarter piling on eight more goals saw Gleeson take the match overall 26 to Henley’s 21. The team now progresses through to Round 2, and one step closer to the 2018 State Finals. A big thank you to our Specialist Netball Program Coach Mr Darren Saul for once again for coaching our girls to a successful start, always so calm under pressure! I would also like to thank the parents who gave up time to come and support the girls on the day. Bring on Round 2! Ms Candice Mitchell, Year 10 KO Netball Coach OPEN GIRLS KO BASKETBALLERS IMPRESS WITH COMFORTABLE RND 1 WIN

The Gleeson Open Girls Knockout Basketball Team put in a consistent ‘away’ performance to comfortably win their first round clash against Thomas More College at Thomas More on Thursday 14 June. The team consisted of Jade Halfpenny (11 FSMIL), Jana Ivancic (10 HSRAN), Abby Lowman (10 MSCOD), Breanna Alford (10 MSCOD), Ella Dalton (11 HSPLL), Emily Carden (10 MSSEL), Teagan Wilson (10 HSDAW), Isabella Convill (10 FSHOL) and Alicia Malatesta (10 DSHUT - unfortunately who was unwell on the day). Boasting several players with district experience and confident in our ability, we applied a tight defensive structure early in the first quarter, which rattled Thomas More, and upset their offensive structure. Jade Halfpenny was unstoppable, scoring with ease and dominating the offensive end. She was well supported by Abby Lowman, whose presence close to the basket intimidated the opposition and provided second and third opportunities in attack. The girls were consistent across all four quarters, which resulted in a convincing 20-point victory at final siren (56-36). We look forward to the next round of competition and building on an excellent opening performance.

Mr Danny Gloria, Open Girls KO Basketball Coach
