Each Tor House Foundation festival has its own genius, its own flair, style, and special contributions. This year it began Friday, October 13th with a booksigning reception for the festival authors Zaller, Karman, Nemerov and Gioia and Stanford University Press (THE COLLECTED POEMS and THE EXCESSES OF GOD) at the Thunderbird Bookshop, The Barnyard, Highway One and Carmel Valley Road. Saturday saw seminars at Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont, Monterey, in Lecture Forum 103, with moderator, Professor Alison Schwyzer of the Philosophy Department of the College. The morning session heard Dana Gioia, poet and critic, on "Revival of the Narrative Poem," and James Karman, author of Chronicle Books ROBINSON JEFFERS: POET OF CALIFORNIA, on "Jeffers and His Critics." The afternoon session heard Robert Zaller, author of CLIFFS OF SOLITUDE and editor of ELEGIES FOR ROBINSON JEFFERS, on "Land and Value: Jeffers as Environmentalist," followed by a session of questions and discussion. The annual Jeffers banquet was held at the Carmel Mission Inn, Rio Road and Route One, where Poet Laureate Howard Nemerov gave an hour-long after dinner talk on the genius of Jeffers' poetry, his peculiar prophetic voice, and some of the agreements and dis- agreements Mr. -

Spring 2005 Volume XIX, Number 1 Nota Bene News from the Yale Library The Lost Papers of Louise Bryant The personal papers of the pioneering foreign correspon- dent Louise Bryant arrived unexpectedly at the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale University. Thought to be lost, the papers contain such treasures as Bryant’s notes on what she witnessed in Russia during the communist revolution of 1917 and several poems written by the young playwright Eugene O’Neill, apparently never before published. Louise Bryant lived a remarkable life. Born in 1885, she was one of the earliest women to become a star foreign correspondent. Her reporting on the Russian Revolution appeared in hundreds of American news- papers and, for a brief period, she was one of the lead- ing authorities in the United States on the new Soviet government, publishing two books on the subject. She knew personally and interviewed many of the leading figures of revolutionary Russia including Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Alexandr Kerensky. Bryant filled her personal life with similarly noteworthy individuals. Her second husband was the radical journalist John Reed; her third husband was William C. Bullitt, the first American ambassador to the Soviet Union and later ambassador to France; and she had a short but 1919 intense affair with Eugene O’Neill. Bullitt as part of a deposit by Anne Moen Bullitt, the daughter of Bryant and Bullitt. Biographers of Bryant believed her personal Lloyd Richards papers at the papers to be lost, but when the boxes arrived, archi- Beinecke Library vists were astonished by the quantity and quality of the materials relating to Louise Bryant. -

Bessie Beatty, the Bulletin, 25 September 1917 The centennial of the Russian Revolution celebrated two and a half years ago has been marked by a pronounced revival of interest in its origins and impact upon modern history all over the globe. The occasion presented an opportunity to revisit the unprecedented social and political upheaval that convulsed the country in 1917, defined the world order for much of the twentieth century, and continues to reverberate in Russian national and international politics to this day. Along with countless newly revealed primary sources which have gradually found their way into the public domain, this event has been encrusted with novel meanings spawned within a growing number of discourses previously excluded from his- torical scrutiny. An example of such a disparity would be an unfortunate slight to gendered narratives in the understanding and interpretation of one of the most controversial social experiments in human history. In spite of the fact that, as with their male counterparts, foreign female correspondents became chroniclers, witnesses, and, in some instances, participants in the thrilling social drama, there have been few references to their representation of the Revolution(s) in its histori- ography.1 Meanwhile, compelled to understanding Russia, while informing com- 1 Although disproportionally less than their men-authored counterparts, women’s narratives have previously sparked some occasional interest among historians and scholars of journalism and women studies. -

Alexxa Gotthardt May 17, 2019 5:57 pm Georgia O’Keeffe had an unexpected train detour to thank for her first encounter with New Mexico. Little did she know, it was the land that would free her—both artistically and emotionally. Several months after photographergallerist Alfred Stieglitz presented O’Keeffe’s first New York solo show, in April 1917, the 29yearold painter embarked on a trip across the American West with her youngest sister, Claudia. While they’d planned to head straight from Texas to Colorado, their train detoured to Santa Fe. ABSTRACT: This article explores and discusses the intertextualities that are found in selected plays written in the circle of Heterodoxy in the 1910s, the Greenwich Village-based radical club for unorthodox women. The article examines some of the parallels that can be found in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Something to Vote For, George Middleton’s Back of the Ballot, Mary Jenney Howe’s An Anti-Suffrage Monologue and Telling the Truth at the White House, written in collaboration with Paula Jakobi, Mary Shaw’s The Parrot Cage and The Woman of It, and Susan Glaspell’s Trifles, Bernice, Chains of Dew and Woman’s Honor. The works are put in the context of the national movement for woman suffrage and focuses on the authors’ arguments for suffrage as well as on their formal choices, ranging from realism to expressionism, satire and parody. But, in truth, behind the screen of smoke and flame they are like other men : no larger and no smaller, no better and no worse: all crea tures of the same incessant passions, hungers, vani ties and fears. So it is in Russia. The tradition of literary gatherings began in Renaissance France and Italy, but it was in eighteenth-century Paris that the salon gained prominence for lively intellectual conversation in the fields of arts and letters. The hostesses of these events were typically women of some distinction, whether by title or personal wealth. The meetings were often referred to by the day of the week on which they were held. Topics of conversation ranged from (but were not limited to) matters of literary and social taste and, increasingly, political issues. Salon conversation was characterized by a blend of wit and oral brilliance. A notable salon hostess of eighteenth-century Paris was Madeleine de Scudéry. Famous for her "Saturdays of Sappho," she recreated salon society in her novels. What is striking about these assemblies is that they were presided over by women, a rare example of female control in a literary realm. During the nineteenth century, Paris salons became showcases for musicians such as Chopin and Liszt. -

Nelson 1 Abstract The Power of Place: Structure, Culture, and Continuities in U.S. Women's Movements by Laura K. Nelson Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology University of California, Berkeley Professor Kim Voss, Chair This dissertation challenges the widely accepted historical accounts of women's movements in the United States. Second-wave feminism, claim historians, was unique because of its development of radical feminism, defined by its insistence on changing consciousness, its focus on women being oppressed as a sex-class, and its efforts to emphasize the political nature of personal problems. I show that these features of second-wave radical feminism were not in fact unique but existed in almost identical forms during the first wave. Moreover, within each wave of feminism there were debates about the best way to fight women's oppression. As radical feminists were arguing that men as a sex-class oppress women as a sex-class, other feminists were claiming that the social system, not men, is to blame. This debate existed in both the first and second waves. Importantly, in both the first and the second wave there was a geographical dimension to these debates: women and organizations in Chicago argued that the social system was to blame while women and organizations in New York City argued that men were to blame. -
