SHERK THE EPONYMOUS OFFICIALS OF GREEK CITIES: I aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 83 (1990) 249–288 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 249 The Eponymous Officials of Greek Cities: I (A) Introduction The eponymous official or magistrate after whom the year was named in Greek cities or as- sociations is well known to all epigraphists under various titles: archon, prytanis, stephanepho- ros, priest, etc. Some details about them have appeared in many articles and in scattered pas- sages of scholarly books. However, not since the publication of Clemens Gnaedinger, De Graecorum magistratibus eponymis quaestiones epigraphicae selectae (Diss. Strassburg 1892) has there been a treatment of the subject as a whole, although the growth of the material in this regard has been enormous.1 What is missing, however, is an attempt to bring the material up to date in a comprehensive survey covering the whole Greek world, at least as far as possible. The present article, of which this is only the first part, will present that material in a geographically organized manner: mainland Greece and the adjacent islands, then the Aegean islands, Asia Minor and Thrace, Syria, Egypt, Cyrene, Sicily, and southern Italy. All the epi- graphic remains of that area have been examined and catalogued. General observations and conclusions will be presented after the evidence as a whole has been given. I. Earliest Examples of Eponymity The earliest form of writing appeared in Sumer and Assyria sometime within the last half of the fourth millennium BC, and from there it spread westward. Thus, it is not at all surpris- ing that the Mesopotamian civilizations also made the earliest use of assigning names or events to years in dating historical records. -

ABSTRACT The author proposes that the Athenian Prytaneion, one of the city's most important civic buildings, was located in the peristyle complex beneath Agia Aikaterini Square, near the ancient Street of the Tripods and theMonument of Lysikrates in the modern Plaka. This thesis, which is consistent with Pausa s nias topographical account of ancient Athens, is supported by archaeological and epigraphical evidence. Red-Figured Pottery from Corinth Plate 64
RED-FIGUREDPOTTERY FROM CORINTH SACRED SPRING AND ELSEWHERE (PLATES 63-74) THE PRESENT ARTICLE publishes the inventoried pieces of Attic red-figured pottery discovered during the excavations of the Sacred Spring. Four fragments, 49-52, belong to an unidentified fabric which does not appear to be Attic. The article also includes fragments from the Peribolos of Apollo and the Lechaion Road East, and ends with two miscellaneous sherds and an importantstemless cup. This is, in fact, the first of two articles which will cover most of the Attic red figure that has been found at Corinth since 1957.1The second article will deal with the pottery from the recent exca- vations in the central and southwesternarea of the Forum. Some 71 pieces, mainly fragments, are presented here: 52 (1-52) come from the Sacred Spring, 6 (53-58) from the Peribolos of Apollo, 10 (59-68) from excavations below Roman Shop V, east of the Lechaion Road, 3 (69-71) from various findspots. The catalogue is arrangedby shape and, within each shape, by date so far as possible. A. SACRED SPRING (Pls. 63-69) The early excavations in the Sacred Spring were published by B. H. Hill. The area was re-examined from 1968 to 1970 and again in 1972, during which eight architectural phases were distinguished, the earliest beginning in the later 8th century, the latest ending with the destruction of Corinth in 146 B.C.2 All the inventoried Attic red figure from the new excavations is listed in the following catalogue, but other fragments, of less significance, are kept in the relevant Corinth pottery lots. -

Space in Aristophanes: Portraying the Civic and Domestic Worlds in Acharnians, Knights, and Wasps Nina Papathanasopoulou Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 ©2013 Nina Papathanasopoulou All rights reserved ABSTRACT Space in Aristophanes: Portraying the Civic and Domestic Worlds in Acharnians, Knights, and Wasps Nina Papathanasopoulou This dissertation explores the treatment of the scenic and diegetic space in Aristophanes’ Acharnians, Knights, and Wasps, and the comedies’ attitude towards a variety of domestic and civic spaces, taking into consideration the cultural context in which the plays were composed. I argue that by using visual creativity and the available staging resources, Aristophanes calls attention to the consequences of the Peloponnesian war on the Athenians’ civic and domestic life. Acharnians, Knights, and Wasps all literalize in an imaginative way the impact of the dysfunction of the polis – the assembly, the agora, the boule, the lawcourts – on the oikos and the householder. The plays not only explore what happens to the oikos itself, but also the implications for a polis in which the oikos loses its place of prominence. Acharnians displays an example of the polis’ dysfunction in an assembly meeting at the Pnyx, and traces an individual’s frustration with this polis and his journey back to his oikos. We witness the reactions of Dikaiopolis and the Acharnians, both of whom have been forced out of their oikoi, have had their properties ravaged, and experience their estrangement with nostalgia or anger. I argue that through a private peace treaty Dikaiopolis is able to return to his oikos, and then expand his domestic space in order to be reintegrated into a functional community. -

Rationality and Irrationality in the Ancient Greek Law of Procedure
RATIONALITY AND IRRATIONALITY IN THE ANCIENT GREEK LAW OF PROCEDURE Gerhard Thür* Scholarship is rational. Life is irrational and full of emotion. This paper,1 dedicated to my friend Laurens, will be on rationality and irrationality in the ancient Greek law of procedure. When did the Greeks start deciding legal disputes in a rational way? What did judgements look like before that? After the publication of the masterly book by E.R. Dodds, the topic “the Greeks and the irrational” has boomed. Nevertheless, the legal aspect has been disregarded. The same may be said of the learned contributions on “rationality in Greek thought” in Frede/Striker (1996). In my opinion what is rational or irrational is largely in the eye of the beholder: what people at that time may have considered a completely rational type of adjudication, today seems irrational. Besides, those people might not always have been aware of the consequences of innovations that were introduced into the system. I shall concentrate on Draco’s law on homicide dating back to 621-620 B.C.2 It is the oldest known Greek statute on bloodshed and its prosecution. At the time of the general revision of laws in Athens in 409-408 B.C., it was copied from wooden blocks, axones,3 onto a marble stele. This stele was found in the1880s in a poor state of preservation. However, quotations from speeches made in Athenian courts of the fi fth and fourth century B.C. allow a partial reconstruction, now edited in the Inscriptiones Graecae (IG I3 104).4 1 I present a slightly enlarged and modifi ed version of a paper presented at the International Conference: Ius est ars boni et aequi, Southern African Society of Legal Historians, Pilanesberg 12-16 May 2013.
