Page !3 Fingerpicking Technique While not the focus of this masterclass, some basics of fingerpicking technique need to be covered first, albeit briefly. 1. Correct Picking Hand Position While it does come down to context, the general position for your picking hand when fingerpicking guitar is to have your wrist raised, so that your fingers are at a 90 degree angle to the strings. This provides your fingers with much more leverage/ power in which to pluck each string. 2. Finger Choices Your thumb and fingers of the picking hand are referenced with a letter: p = thumb i = index m = middle a = ring This is a universal way of referencing the fingers of your picking hand that will be plucking the strings. The basic rule of thumb is as follows: • Thumb (p) plucks the lower/thicker 3 strings of the guitar (E, A, and D) • Index finger (i) plucks the 3rd string (G) • Middle finger (m) plucks the 2nd string (B) • Ring finger (a) plucks the 1st string (E) It is important to note that the above is more of a guide, or a starting/reference point than a rule. © Guitar Mastery Solutions, Inc. Page !4 3. Finger Efficiency • Don’t yank your fingers away from the strings after plucking them • Movements stem from the fingers themselves, not the arm • Your arm and wrist should, for the most part, remain still throughout Fingerpicking Patterns When you reduce everything down, there are only 3 main approaches to fingerpicking your guitar. They are: 1. Plucking single notes 2. Plucking notes together (2, 3, 4 at a time) 3. Pinching notes together (2 at a time only, the thumb and one other finger) Single Note Patterns Here are some single note fingerpicking patterns: Plucking Notes Together Patterns Here are some note together fingerpicking patterns, mixed with single note approaches: © Guitar Mastery Solutions, Inc. Introduction To Flamenco: Rhythmic Foundation and Accompaniment by "Flamenco Chuck" Keyser P.O. Box 1292 Santa Barbara, CA 93102 [email protected] http://users.aol.com/BuleriaChk/private/flamenco.html © Charles H. Keyser, Jr. 1993 (Painting by Rowan Hughes) Flamenco Philosophy IA My own view of Flamenco is that it is an artistic expression of an intense awareness of the existential human condition. It is an effort to come to terms with the concept that we are all "strangers and afraid, in a world we never made"; that there is probably no higher being, and that even if there is he/she (or it) is irrelevant to the human condition in the final analysis. The truth in Flamenco is that life must be lived and death must be faced on an individual basis; that it is the fundamental responsibility of each man and woman to come to terms with their own alienation with courage, dignity and humor, and to support others in their efforts. It is an excruciatingly honest art form. For flamencos it is this ever-present consciousness of death that gives life itself its meaning; not only as in the tragedy of a child's death from hunger in a far-off land or a senseless drive-by shooting in a big city, but even more fundamentally in death as a consequence of life itself, and the value that must be placed on life at each moment and on each human being at each point in their journey through it. And it is the intensity of this awareness that gave the Gypsy artists their power of expression.

For your reference, here's a link to the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTHwqVadL64 This month's lesson is a primer on some of the country guitar techniques that differ significantly from how you probably play if you come from the blues/rock school of guitar playing. I'm planning a full DVD in this style, which will expand on these ideas and add a lot more about double-stops, bending, chromatics, and creating fills and solos using all these techniques. Bookmark our site and subscribe to our YouTube channel to be sure you don't miss upcoming lessons! * First off is the tab for the lick I play at the beginning of the video. I suggest that you work through the video before jumping in and trying this. It's important to learn the proper right-hand technique first - you don't want to practice incorrectly and wind up "programming" your fingers the wrong way. If you're familiar with hybrid picking, then you're ready to try it out: My suggestions for the picking are next to the tab: P = pick M = middle finger R = ring finger Please pardon the way the tablature program displays the grace notes on the D- string.

Gitarre; It. chitarra; Sp. guitarra; Port.viola; Brazilian Port. violão). A string instrument of the lute family, plucked or strummed, and normally with frets along the fingerboard. It is difficult to define precisely what features distinguish guitars from other members of the lute family, because the name ‘guitar’ has been applied to instruments exhibiting a wide variation in morphology and performing practice. The modern classical guitar has six strings, a wooden resonating chamber with incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Although its earlier history includes periods of neglect as far as art music is concerned, it has always been an instrument of popular appeal, and has become an internationally established concert instrument endowed with an increasing repertory. In the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system the guitar is a ‘composite chordophone’ of the lute type (seeLUTE, §1, andCHORDOPHONE). 1. Structure of the modern guitar. Fig.1 shows the parts of the modern classical guitar. In instruments of the highest quality these have traditionally been made of carefully selected woods: the back and sidewalls of Brazilian rosewood, the neck cedar and the fingerboard ebony; the face or table, acoustically the most important part of the instrument, is of spruce, selected for its resilience, resonance and grain (closeness of grain is considered important, and a good table will have a grain count about 5 or 6 per cm). The table and back are each composed of two symmetrical sections, as is the total circumference of the sidewalls.

I didn’t know what a session was like, and I didn’t understand why tunes sounded painfully lame when I played them verbatim off the page. One lazy summer day, I Googled “Boston Irish session” and found out about the early session at the Green Briar in Brighton. After mustering up my courage, I showed up and sat there, ears open and flute in my lap, every week for months until the tunes started to sink in and I saw what other players did to breathe life into them. Gradually I branched out to other sessions,
