Page !3 Fingerpicking Technique While not the focus of this masterclass, some basics of fingerpicking technique need to be covered first, albeit briefly. 1. Correct Picking Hand Position While it does come down to context, the general position for your picking hand when fingerpicking guitar is to have your wrist raised, so that your fingers are at a 90 degree angle to the strings. This provides your fingers with much more leverage/ power in which to pluck each string. 2. Finger Choices Your thumb and fingers of the picking hand are referenced with a letter: p = thumb i = index m = middle a = ring This is a universal way of referencing the fingers of your picking hand that will be plucking the strings. The basic rule of thumb is as follows: • Thumb (p) plucks the lower/thicker 3 strings of the guitar (E, A, and D) • Index finger (i) plucks the 3rd string (G) • Middle finger (m) plucks the 2nd string (B) • Ring finger (a) plucks the 1st string (E) It is important to note that the above is more of a guide, or a starting/reference point than a rule. © Guitar Mastery Solutions, Inc. Page !4 3. Finger Efficiency • Don’t yank your fingers away from the strings after plucking them • Movements stem from the fingers themselves, not the arm • Your arm and wrist should, for the most part, remain still throughout Fingerpicking Patterns When you reduce everything down, there are only 3 main approaches to fingerpicking your guitar. They are: 1. Plucking single notes 2. Plucking notes together (2, 3, 4 at a time) 3. Pinching notes together (2 at a time only, the thumb and one other finger) Single Note Patterns Here are some single note fingerpicking patterns: Plucking Notes Together Patterns Here are some note together fingerpicking patterns, mixed with single note approaches: © Guitar Mastery Solutions, Inc.
