Beyond moraic conservation Rebeka Campos-Astorkiza The Ohio State University Department of Spanish and Portuguese Abstract Compensatory Lengthening (CL) refers to processes where deletion of a segment leads to lengthening of another segment. The deleted segment (trigger) and the lengthened segment (target) can be either a vowel or a consonant. Previous research has focused mainly on cases of vowel lengthening, paying less attention to consonant lengthening. The goal of this paper is to argue for two different motivations driving consonant lengthening in different languages, based on the typological comparison between vowel and consonant lengthening developed in Campos-Astorkiza (2005). Traditionally, CL has been explained through moraic conservation (Hayes 1995), according to which the trigger is always a moraic segment and upon its deletion, the stranded mora is attached to an adjacent element resulting in lengthening. However, moraic conservation has been challenged and, based on typological considerations, the current study argues that not all instances of consonant CL have the same motivation. I propose that phonologization and perceived similarity play a role in different cases. According to the phonologization account (see Kavistskaya 2002 for vowel lengthening), the phonetic consonant duration is reanalyzed as phonological upon loss of the conditioning environment. This analysis is illustrated with data from the Greek dialects of Lesbian and Thessalian. The perceived similarity approach, based on work by Steriade (2001), argues that the result of compensatory lengthening is more similar to the original sequence than the result of only deleting. Hungarian presents a case of compensatory lengthening where perceived similarity offers an explanation to the observed pattern. 2 1. Introduction The term compensatory lengthening (CL) is used in the literature to refer to a process by which deletion of a segment leads to lengthening of another segment. Let us illustrate CL with two examples: Turkish vowel lengthening and Eastern Andalusian Spanish consonant lengthening. In Turkish, optional deletion of /h/ before a continuant or nasal leads to lengthening of the preceding vowel (Sezer 1986). This process in illustrated in (1a), where the two variant pronunciations are included. /h/ preceding an oral stop is not subject to optional deletion (1b), and consequently, no CL applies. (1) Turkish compensatory vowel lengthening (Sezer 1986). (a) [ka hja] ~ [k aːːːja] ‘steward’ [a hmet] ~ [aːːːmet] man’s name (b) [sa hte] ~ *[sa ːːːte] ‘counterfeit’ [so hbet] ~ *[so ːːːbet] ‘chit-chat’ Eastern Andalusian Spanish (EAS) presents a case where obstruent deletion occurs together with lengthening of the following consonant (Gerfen 2001, 2002, Penny 2000), as exemplified in (2a). The deleted segment in EAS is a coda obstruent in preconsonantal position and upon its deletion, the following consonant gets lengthened. It is relevant to notice that in EAS there are morphological alternations where the trigger obstruent surfaces, for example when this consonant occupies a prefix final position and the following stem begins with a vowel (2b). (2) EAS compensatory consonant lengthening 1. (a) [de nn ibel] ‘unevenness’ (/des+nibel/) [su mm arino] ‘submarine’ (/sub+marino/) [bo kk e] ‘forest’ (cf. boske in Standard Peninsular Spanish) (b) [de sato] ‘I untie’ (/des+ato/) [su bordinado] ‘subordinate’ (/sub+ordinado/) In cases of CL, the deleted element is the trigger and the lengthened segment is the target. These two terms, trigger and target, will be used from now on to refer to the segments involved in CL. There are four logically possible types of CL. The target can be either a vowel or a consonant, and the trigger can also be a vowel or a consonant. Previous research has looked mainly at cases of vowel lengthening, paying less attention to consonant lengthening. This paper focuses on consonant lengthening. Its goal is to argue for two distinct motivations driving this type of lengthening in different languages, based on the typological comparison between vowel and consonant lengthening developed in Campos-Astorkiza (2005) . Traditionally, CL has been explained through moraic conservation (Hayes 1989), according to which the trigger is always a moraic segment and upon its deletion, the stranded mora is attached to an adjacent element resulting in lengthening. I propose that the sound change mechanism of phonologization (defined in section 3.1), and perceived similarity play a role in different cases. According to the phonologization account (see Kavitskaya 2002 for vowel lengthening), the phonetic consonant duration is reanalyzed as phonological upon loss of the conditioning environment. This analysis is illustrated with data from the Greek dialects of Lesbian and Thessalian (see examples in section 3.2 below). The paper is structured as follows. In section 2, I present a typological comparison between compensatory vowel and consonant lengthening with respect to the directionality of the process, adjacency of trigger and target and the type of trigger, based on Campos-Astorkiza (2005). In section 3, the phonologization analysis of compensatory vowel lengthening developed by Kavitskaya (2002) is presented. An extension of this analysis is considered for the phenomenon of consonant lengthening. Section 4 introduces the Theory of Perceived Similarity developed by Steriade (2001) and applies it to some instances of consonant lengthening. In section 5, I present the moraic conservation approach to CL, focusing on the main problems with this account. Section 6 summarizes the main proposal put forth in this paper and suggests venues for future research. 4 2. Typological comparison between compensatory vowel and consonant lengthening In this section, I present a typological comparison between compensatory vowel and consonant lengthening, based on the main generalizations reached by Campos-Astorkiza (2005) 2, which are summarized below. Several differences and similarities are identified with respect to adjacency between the trigger and target, directionality of the process, i.e., where the target and the trigger occur with respect to each other, and type of trigger. 2.1. Adjacency In this section, adjacency requirements between the trigger and the target of CL are examined. In cases of vowel lengthening through consonant loss, the trigger and the target must be strictly adjacent to each other, as we saw in Turkish. Kavitskaya (2002) presents Ancient Greek as an apparent exception. As (3) illustrates, glide deletion in Ancient Greek leads to lengthening of a vowel across an intervening consonant (Ingria 1980, Wetzels 1986). CL in Ancient Greek is considered in more detail in section 3. As for vowel lengthening through vowel deletion, the trigger and the target are not adjacent but separated by an intervening consonant. The scheme CVCV → CV:C represents the behavior of these cases. 3 (3) Ancient Greek compensatory vowel lengthening. *kl injoːːː > [kl iːːːno ːːː] ‘tend’ *p htherjoːːː > [p htheːːːro ːːː] ‘destroy’ The typological evidence gathered in Campos-Astorkiza (2005) indicates that the trigger and the target in consonant lengthening are strictly adjacent in all cases, as Eastern Andalusian Spanish illustrates. There are no instances where the trigger and the target consonant are separated by some other element, i.e., there are no cases of long distance compensatory consonant lengthening. 2.2. Directionality The directionality of compensatory vowel lengthening processes is usually right-to-left. This means that the trigger or deleted segment is to the right of the target or lengthened vowel. The Turkish data in (1) illustrate right-to-left directionality (e.g. [kahja] ~ [ka:ja] ‘steward’). There seem to be some exceptions to this generalization. In some languages, deletion of an onset liquid 2 Campos-Astorkiza’s (2005) generalizations with respect to vowel lengthening are based on Kavitskaya (2002). 3 Note that even if the two vowels are not acoustically adjacent, in articulatory terms they are, given that vowel production is continuous and any intervening consonant is superimposed on the vowels (Öhman 1967, Fowler 1983). Thus, from an articulatory perspective, it could be claimed that the trigger and target are strictly adjacent. 5 leads to lengthening of the following vowel. In these cases the directionality is left-to-right. Languages that exemplify this pattern include Romanesco Italian, Samothraki Greek and Onondaga. In Samothraki Greek, postconsonantal and word-initial /r/ deletes with subsequent lengthening of the following vowel (Kavitskaya 2002, Topintzi 2006). Some illustrative data are given in (4).

A phonetic correspondence can be said to exist between a sound at one point in the history of a language and the sound that is its direct descendent at any subsequent point in the history of that language. A phonetic correspondence often reflects the results of several phonetic process es that have affected a segment serially . Although phonetic process es are synchronic phenomena, they often have diachronic consequences.

Yates University of California, Los Angeles [email protected] Abstract This paper presents a systematic reassessment of Sturtevant’s Law (Sturtevant 1932), which governs the differing outcomes of Proto-Indo-European voiced and voice- less obstruents in Hittite (Anatolian). I argue that Sturtevant’s Law was a con- ditioned pre-Hittite sound change whereby (i) contrastively voiceless word-medial obstruents regularly underwent gemination (cf. Melchert 1994), but gemination was blocked for stops in pre-stop position; and (ii) the inherited [±voice] contrast was then lost, replaced by the [±long] opposition observed in Hittite (cf. Blevins 2004). I pro- vide empirical and typological support for this novel restriction, which is shown not only to account straightforwardly for data that is problematic under previous analy- ses, but also to be phonetically motivated, a natural consequence of the poorly cued durational contrast between voiceless and voiced stops in pre-stop environments. I develop an optimality-theoretic analysis of this gemination pattern in pre-Hittite, and discuss how this grammar gave rise to synchronic Hittite via “transphonologization” (Hyman 1976, 2013). Finally, it is argued that this analysis supports deriving the Hittite stop system from the Proto-Indo-European system as traditionally reconstructed with an opposition between voiceless, voiced, and breathy voiced stops (contra Kloekhorst 2016, Jäntti 2017). Introduction The sound /l/ is generally characterised in the literature as a coronal lateral approximant. This standard description holds that the sounds involves contact between the tip of the tongue and the alveolar ridge, but instead of the air being blocked at the sides of the tongue, it is also allowed to pass down the sides. In many (but not all) dialects of English /l/ has two allophones – clear /l/ ([l]), roughly as described, and dark, or velarised, /l/ ([…]) involving a secondary articulation – the retraction of the back of the tongue towards the velum. In dialects which exhibit this allophony, the clear /l/ occurs in syllable onsets and the dark /l/ in syllable rhymes (leaf [li˘f] vs. feel [fi˘…] and table [te˘b…]). Casali Ghana Institute of Linguistics Literacy and Bible Translation and UCLA A spectrographic investigation into the non-contrastive labialization of consonants before round vowels in Nawuri (a Kwa language of Ghana) sup­ ports the notion that this labialization is the result of a phonological, feature­ spreading rule and not simply an automatic transitional process. This as­ sumption is further warranted in that it allows for a more natural treatment of some other phonological processes in the language. The fact that labial­ ization before round vowels is generally not very audible is explained in terms of a principle of speech perception. A final topic addressed is the question of why (both in Nawuri and apparently in a number of other Ghanaian languages as well) contextual labialization does tend to be more perceptible in certain restricted environments. o. In the configuration studied here, deletion occurs in the vowel of a CV verb when occurring before a V-initial direct object (/CV1 +V2 / → [CV2]). However, instead of full vowel deletion as it is previously analysed (e.g. Akinlabi and Oyebade 1987, Ola Orie and Pulleyblank 2002), a compensatory lengthening analysis is proposed based on this new phonetic evidence. The experiment for this study controlled for inherent vowel duration, voicing, and manner of articulation of the surrounding consonants. These results are in line with a similar result regarding Yorùbá tone (Ajíbóyè et al. 2011) in the same syntactic (verb + direct object) configuration.     Chapter 1 Between natural and unnatural phonology: The case of cluster-splitting epenthesis Juliette Blevins The Graduate Center, CUNY A widely recognized feature of loan-word phonology is the resolution of clusters by vowel epenthesis. When a language lacking word-initial clusters borrows words from a language with initial #TRV sequences, T an oral stop and R a liquid, it is common to find vowel epenthesis, most typically vowel-copy, as in, for example: Basque <gurutze> ‘cross’ from Latin <cruce(m)>; Q’eqchi’ <kurus> ‘cross’ from Spanish <cruz> ‘cross’, or Fijian <kolosi> ‘cross’ from English <cross>. The phonological rule or sound change responsible for this pat- tern is sometimes called “cluster-splitting epenthesis”: #TRVi > #TV(i)RVi. The most widely accepted explanation for this pattern is that vowel epenthesis between the oral stop andthe following sonorant is due to the vowel-like nature of the TR transition, since #TRVi is per- ceptually similar to #TV(i)RVi. A fact not often appreciated, however, is that cluster-splitting epenthesis is extremely rare as a language-internal development. The central premise of this chapter is that #TRVi in a non-native language is heard or perceived as #TV(i)RVi when phonotactics of the native language demand TV transitions. Without this cognitive compo- nent, cluster-splitting epenthesis is rare and, as argued here, decidedly unnatural. 1 Introduction Diachronic explanations have been offered for both natural and unnatural sound pat- terns in human spoken languages. Building on the Neogrammarian tradition, as well as the experimental research program of Ohala (e.g. 1971; 1974; 1993), it is argued that natural sound patterns, like final obstruent devoicing, nasal place assimilation, vowel harmony, consonant lenition, and many others, arise from regular sound changes with clear phonetic bases (Blevins 2004, 2006, 2008, 2015; Anderson 2016).

    COMPENSATORY LENGTHENING IN ∗ HARMONIC SERIALISM BERN SAMKO BSAMKO @ UCSC . E D U June 2011 1 Introduction Informally, compensatory lengthening (CL) is a phenomenon that consists of two parts: the deletion of a weight-bearing segment, and the concomitant lengthening of another, usually adjacent segment. Unsurpris- ingly, analyses of CL are usually derivational in that lengthening only occurs after it is triggered by deletion of a neighboring segment. Less discussed is the fact that, because CL is triggered only by the loss of moraic segments, both of these steps must refer to a syllabified and moraically specified form. Only coda conso- nants can be associated with moras, and a particular segment’s status as a coda can only be determined after the form has been syllabified. It is crucial, therefore, that syllabification and assignment of moras happen before segmental deletion. In constraint-based phonology, this requirement for prosodic structure means that faithfulness vio- lations must be evaluated with respect to a form that contains prosodic structure at least up to the level of the syllable. Doing so is not possible in classic Optimality Theory (OT, Prince and Smolensky 1993/2004), a framework that disallows intermediate levels of representation. Moreover, it is not immediately obvious that Harmonic Serialism (HS; McCarthy 2000, et seq.), an iterative version of OT, allows for this particular intermediate stage. Even in HS, there is no guarantee that the correct syllabic and moraic structure will be built before segmental changes occur. I will show that a ranking paradox prevents the building of prosodic structure from intrinsically preceding deletion of segments.

    Quantitative Metathesis in Ancient Greek Anita Brown Bryn Mawr College December 2017 Abstract This paper explores the phenomenon known as 'quantitative metathesis' in Ancient Greek. Historically this change, an apparent metathesis of vowel length, has been considered to be true metathesis by classicists, but recent scholarship has cast suspicion on this notion, not least because metathesis of vowel length is not a known change in any other language. In this paper, I present a review of previous scholarship on Greek quantitative metathesis, in addition to a cross-linguistic survey of general metathesis, with special attention to autosegmental theory. Evolutionary phonology and sound change typology. A central goal of Evolutionary Phonology (Blevins 2004a, 2006a, 2008a, 2009a, 2009b, 2010) is to explain why certain sound patterns have the properties and typological distributions they do. Why are sound patterns involving, for example, final obstruent devoicing, extremely common cross-linguistically, while final obstruent voicing is rare? Why is laryngeal epenthesis common but sibilant epenthesis rare? Though these kinds of questions relate directly to aspects of synchronic sound patterns, comprehensive answers to them typically refer to properties of sound change typology. Common sound patterns often reflect common instances of sound change. Since the most common instances of sound change appear to be those with clear and robust phonetic conditioning, there is a direct link in this model between phonetically motivated sound change and common sound patterns. In contrast, rare sound patterns may reflect rare types of sound change, rare historical sequences of change, lack a source in phonetically motivated sound change, reflect language-specific analogical change, or, for other reasons, be the endpoint of a highly unlikely evolutionary pathway.1 Sound change typology is a somewhat new area of study, to the extent that clear explanations are sought for properties of sound change (target, structural change, environment), typological distributions of sound change (common, rare, areal properties, structural associations), and asymmetries in certain types of change (e.g. velar palatalization vs. palatal velarization, final obstruent devoicing vs. final obstruent voicing).

    Sound change Andrew Garrett UC Berkeley “[T]he causes of sound change are unknown.” — Leonard Bloomfield, Language (1933:385) 1 Introduction If new words and lexical usages are the most recognizable aspect of language change, the emergence of novel pronunciation patterns and the existence of distinct accents of the same language are also familiar to casual observers.1 Despite its ubiquity, there is no generally accepted definition of sound change. It certainly includes phonologization, whereby an automatic phonetic property evolves into a language-specific phonological one (Jakobson 1931, Hyman 1977, 2012). For some analysts, the phenomenon of sound change also encompasses phonological change with other origins, such as dialect contact, paradigm regularization, or structural simplification. Defining the object of study is important when different definitions lead to different views of its mechanisms and properties. Nonetheless, in what follows I take a pragmatic approach, highlighting some phenomena, questions, and further literature that seem especially interesting at present, and setting others aside. Students entering the field in 2013 will find a different landscape from that of a generation ago. Inquiry into the causes and pathways of sound change has been transformed by the work of five scholars in particular. Three of them, Paul Kiparsky (1988, 1995), William Labov (e.g. 1981, 1994, 2001, 2010), and Björn Lindblom (Lindblom 1990, Lindblom et al. 1995), have proposed influential structural analyses of changes within their sound systems. Two others, Juliette Blevins (e.g. Blevins and Garrett 1998, 2004, Blevins 2004, 2006a) and John Ohala (e.g. 1974, 1981, 1983, 1993), have also emphasized the role of articulatory detail and perceptual processes in determining the course of sound changes.

    LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS 5.4:925-968, 2004 2004-0-005-004-000099-1 Contour Tone Licensing and Contour Tone Representation Jie Zhang University of Kansas In this paper, I argue that the positional restrictions of contour tones do not result from their bimoraicity requirement for licensing. The arguments come from the licensing advantage of syllables in positions that are not moraically privileged, the extra levels of markedness distinction in contour tones that go beyond the maximum mora count allowed in the theory, the differences among contour tones with the same number of pitch targets, and the long lasting problem of moraic inconsistency. I propose a theoretical apparatus that allows more phonetic detail in both the tonal shape and rime duration to enter into phonological representations and show that it on the one hand provides a better account for the cross-linguistic behavior of contour tone licensing, but on the other hand does not endanger the predictive power of phonological theory. Introduction 1.1 The general roles of the mora in phonology The notion of the mora in linguistic theory can be traced back to Trubetzkoy (1939), in which he acknowledged its role in the placement of stress in Classical Latin: ‘[It] always occurred on the penultimate “mora” before the last syllable, that is, either on the penultimate syllable, if the latter was long, or on the antepenultimate, if the penultimate was short.’ (Trubetzkoy 1939, Baltaxe translation 1969:174) It was then referred to in McCawley’s (1968) study of Japanese accent to account for the occur- rence of different pitches on a single rime and Newman’s (1972) survey of stress assign- ment in languages in which the distinction between heavy and light syllables must be made.

    MORAS OR SKELETAL UNITS? A QUESTION OF PARAMETRIC VARIATION Maria-Rosa Lloret Universitat Aut6noma de Barcelona One major issue that is being addressed in recent phonological research is whether the phonological representation has to recognize the existence of moras or skeletai units as primitives. The present paper argues that both approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive, since there exists the possibility that some phonological processes have to refer to both phonologicai entities in order to account for all the facts of a language. In fact, tbis dichotomy wrongly appeared by facing Hayes' (1989) moraic theory with other theories of syllable structure. However, if one takes into amunt that neither the skeleton can be disregarded nor syllable weight is always a phonological variable, a new ordering of phonological primitives can be suggested, which does not cmespond to altemative prosodic theories but reflects the parametric variation that languages show between moraic and syllablic structure. 1.
