Fulhorst To increase our knowledge of the geographic on the North American continent are Bayou virus, Black distribution of hantaviruses associated with neotomine or Creek Canal virus (BCCV), Choclo virus (CHOV), New sigmodontine rodents in Mexico, we tested 876 cricetid York virus, and Sin Nombre virus (SNV) (3–7). Other rodents captured in 18 Mexican states (representing at hantaviruses that are principally associated with neotomine least 44 species in the subfamily Neotominae and 10 or North American sigmodontine rodents include Carrizal species in the subfamily Sigmodontinae) for anti-hantavirus virus (CARV), Catacamas virus, El Moro Canyon virus IgG. We found antibodies against hantavirus in 35 (4.0%) rodents. Nucleotide sequence data from 5 antibody-positive (ELMCV), Huitzilac virus (HUIV), Limestone Canyon rodents indicated that Sin Nombre virus (the major cause of virus (LSCV), Montano virus (MTNV), Muleshoe virus hantavirus pulmonary syndrome [HPS] in the United States) (MULV), Playa de Oro virus, and Rio Segundo virus is enzootic in the Mexican states of Nuevo León, San Luis (RIOSV) (8–14). Approximately 220 Species of Wild Mammals Occur in California And
Mammals pproximately 220 species of wild mammals occur in California and the surrounding waters (including introduced species, but not domestic species Asuch as house cats). Amazingly, the state of California has about half of the total number of species that occur on the North American continent (about 440). In part, this diversity reflects the sheer number of different habitats available throughout the state, including alpine, desert, coniferous forest, grassland, oak woodland, and chaparral habitat types, among others (Bakker 1984, Schoenherr 1992, Alden et al. 1998). About 17 mammal species are endemic to California; most of these are kangaroo rats, chipmunks, and squirrels. Nearly 25% of California’s mammal species are either known or suspected to occur at Quail Ridge (Appendix 9). Species found at Quail Ridge are typical of both the Northwestern California and Great Central Valley mammalian faunas. Two California endemics, the Sonoma chipmunk (see Species Accounts for scientific names) and the San Joaquin pocket mouse, are known to occur at Quail Ridge. None of the mammals at Quail Ridge are listed as threatened or endangered by either the state or federal governments, although Townsend’s big-eared bat, which is suspected to occur at Quail Ridge, is a state-listed species of special concern. Many mammal species are nocturnal, fossorial, fly, or are otherwise difficult to observe. However, it is still possible to detect the presence of mammals at Quail Ridge, both visually and by observation of their tracks, scat, and other sign. The mammals most often seen during the day are mule deer and western gray squirrels. -

Box 1480, Window Rock, AZ 96515 ABSTRACT Holistic Wildlife Services NM was contracted by the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife to conduct biological inventories for mammals at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site (HUTR) as part of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. The goals of this study were to document at least 90% of the mammals using verifiable documentation and taxa-specific field surveys, provide distributional information, estimates of species richness, and relative abundance of mammals, and provide baseline information and make recommendations to develop future management and monitoring schemes of zoological resources. There had been no baseline mammal work conducted at HUTR prior to these surveys. A total of 23 mammal species were estimated to inhabit the park based on species-area models; however we estimated 39 species for HUTR based on known specific ranges and available museum records. Field inventories extended from 26 June to 28 August 2003, and 10 May to 17 June 2004. We used a variety of survey methods including live-trapping, mist netting and acoustic surveys for bats, track-scat surveys, and opportunistic observations. -

Juvenile rodents are typically a dull gray color; hind feet often measure equivalent to adults in all but the youngest of some species. Use a thin, stiff ruler for measurements; ruler should be cut to start at 0 mm mark. Tail should be measured with ruler placed along the dorsal surface of the tail (0 at the junction between tail and rump) and with the tail perpendicular to the body; measure to the end of the last vertebrae (not the hair). Hindfoot should be measured with ruler placed along the bottom of the foot (0 at the heel) with the foot bent perpendicular to the leg; measure to the end of the longest claw (not to the end of the toe). Ear should be measured with the ruler placed into the notch at the base of ear (0 at notch); measure the longest distance to the end of the external ear. (LSA) was hired by the Puente Hills Landfill Native Habitat Preservation Authority (PHLNHPA) to conduct a survey for rodents on the approximately 3,810 acres of PHLNHPA lands in the Puente Hills, Los Angeles County, California. Eight species of rodents were captured during the survey. STUDY AREA PHLNHPA jurisdictional lands consist of undeveloped land located within the Cities of Whittier and La Habra Heights, and unincorporated portions of Los Angeles County known as Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights, stretching from Harbor Boulevard on the east to the intersection of Interstate 605 and State Route 60 on the west. The project area is comprised of approximately 3,810 acres, primarily composed of coastal sage scrub, chaparral, native and nonnative grassland, oak woodland, walnut woodland, and riparian woodland. The Habitat Authority currently owns 1,862 acres, and the remainder of the land is owned by either the City of Whittier or the Sanitation District of Los Angeles County. METHODS Eight nights of trapping (October 24 to November 4, 2005) covered all 23 drainages previously identified by LSA (Figure 1). Figure 1 also shows the locations of the 57 traplines used in this survey; coordinates are provided in Table B. -

The majority of American orthohantaviruses are known to cause disease in humans, and most of these pathogenic strains were not described prior to human cases, indicating the importance of understanding all members of the virus clade. In this review, we summarize information on the ecology of under-studied rodent-borne American orthohantaviruses to form general conclusions and highlight important gaps in knowledge. Information regarding the presence and genetic diversity of many orthohantaviruses throughout the distributional range of their hosts is minimal and would significantly benefit from virus isolations to indicate a reservoir role. Additionally, few studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying transmission routes and factors affecting the environmental persistence of orthohantaviruses, limiting our understanding of factors driving prevalence fluctuations. As landscapes continue to change, host ranges and human exposure to orthohantaviruses likely will as well. Research on the ecology of neglected orthohantaviruses is necessary for understanding both current and future threats to human health.
