Alibaba Group 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival Alibaba Group 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival History and Overview Every year on November 11, Alibaba Group holds the world’s largest 24-hour online shopping event. The 11.11 shopping festival started in 2009 with only 27 merchants with the aim of raising awareness of online shopping in China. The event falls during the seasonal changeover, filling a major gap in the traditional offline retail calendar in China. Often referred to as “Singles Day,” the day became associated with young singles celebrating their independence by treating themselves to a special purchase. Over the past seven years, 11.11 has seen tremendous growth in scale, driven by rising online, mobile and data technology adoption, as well as the strong trajectory of the Chinese consumer market. 11.11 is not just the world’s largest shopping day, but represents how online shopping has transformed the lives of hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers, particularly the booming middle-class and rural population across China. The festival has become a celebration of a new lifestyle that is full of opportunities and excitement, driven by an array of modern technologies. This year’s Alibaba Group 11.11 Global Shopping Festival will once again highlight the strength and cutting-edge innovation of the entire Alibaba ecosystem. A wide variety of products and brands from around the world will be featured to bring a whole new experience to consumers. Unique marketing campaigns, mobile initiatives, logistics technology and capabilities, advanced virtual reality innovations, and much more will all come together in an exciting and non-stop event that will attract the attention of the world. Recap of 2015 11.11 Global Shopping Festival Alibaba generated RMB91.21 billion (around US$14.34 billion) in gross merchandise volume (GMV) settled through Alipay, surpassing U.S. online shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined; Mobile transactions contributed 68.67% of the GMV; Transactions took place in 232 countries/regions, with over 16,000 international brands completing transactions; 115 million buyers and 40,000 merchants participated from around the world; The number of mobile buyers on Tmall.com and Taobao marketplace increased to 94.6 million; Cainiao Network received 467 million delivery orders during the 24-hour shopping period, an increase of 68% YoY. In less than… 2 minutes: GMV of cross-border transactions exceeded the total GMV of cross-border transactions of the previous year; 15 minutes: First 11.11 delivery order completed; 2 hours: First 11.11 inbound cross-border delivery order completed; 12 hours: Total GMV surpassed the total GMV of 2014 11.11 Global Shopping Festival; 18 hours: Total GMV exceeded the daily average retail sales of consumer goods in China in 2014. A Night Full of Opportunity and Excitement The Alibaba Group 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival Countdown Gala Celebration will be held on the evening of November 10 and broadcast live by its official media partner Zhejiang Satellite TV. Alibaba’s media assets including Youku Tudou, Tmall TV Box, Tmall mobile app and UC Web will also be conducting live broadcasts of the gala. This year’s Gala Celebration will create a whole-new interactive experience between mobile, TV and streaming platforms that transcends Internet entertainment, featuring world-class production crews and celebrities. Advertising profit generated from the gala will be given out to consumers in the form of electronic red packets. Alibaba will allocate four one-minute advertising slots at no charge to selected consumers, merchants, nonprofit organizations and ecosystem participants during prime time live broadcasting of this year’s gala to encourage innovation and originality.
