Parasitengona Terrestria (Acari, Actinedida) Roztocza POLSKA AKADEMIA NAUK MUZEUM I INSTYTUT ZOOLOGII FRAGMENTA FAUNISTICA Tom 37 W arszawa, 31 XII 1994 Nr 4 Grzegorz Gabryś, Joanna Mąkol Parasitengona terrestria [Acari, Actinedida) Roztocza A bstract. The area of Roztocze (SE Poland) was faunistically and ecologically studied with respect to Its terrestrial Parasitengona. Fifty five species of five superfamilies were recorded; all the species are new for Roztocze and 29 new to the fauna of Poland. Zawyża to liczbę znanych gatunków i rodzajów, zwłaszcza w obrębie nadrodziny Erythraeoidea. Zmiana tej sytuacji będzie możliwa dopiero po poznaniu i zestawieniu stadiów rozwojowych wszystkich taksonów. Dotychczas nie prowadzono w Polsce szeroko zakrojonych badań regional nych nad omawianą grupą roztoczy, a wszelkie dane pochodzą z prac o chara kterze taksonomicznym bądź z przyczynkarskich badań faunistycznych, często przedwojennych. Tymczasem wykazano stąd dotychczas: Haupt- 2 — FRAGMENTA.. http://rcin.org.pl 1 2 2 G. Gabryś, J. Mąkol mannia kazimierae Hattlinger , Erythraeus kuyperi (O udemans ) oraz Leptus slivovi B eron (Haitlinger 1987b, c, 1992). Niewątpliwie jednak region ten do niedawna należał do najsłabiej poznanych w kraju odnośnie omawianej grupy roztoczy. Większość stanowisk typowano w oparciu o wykaz, którego pełną wersję podają Liana i in. (1992). Materiał konserwowano w 75% alkoholu etylowym a następnie wykonywano trwałe preparaty mikroskopowe w płynie Faure’a-Berlese’go. Oznaczano je w mi kroskopie świetlnym „Jenaval” z przystawką kontrastowo-fazową. Ogółem przebadano ponad 400 stanowisk, z czego 159 zawierało co najmniej jeden okaz z omawianej grupy. Spreparowano 823 okazy, kilkadziesiąt osobni ków należących do gatunku Hirstiosoma latreiRei oznaczono bez wykonywania preparatów trwałych. Wyczerpujący opis terenu badań oraz szaty roślinnej Roztocza można znaleźć w pracach Llany i in. (1992) oraz Izdebskiego i in. (1992). WYKAZ STANOWISK Wykaz zestawiono zgodnie z podziałem na trzy subregiony, tzn. Roztocze Środkowe, Południowe i Zachodnie. Acarina 16 (1): 3–19 © ACARINA 2008 CALYPTOSTASY: ITS ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND LIFE HISTORIES OF THE PARASITENGONE MITES (ACARI: PROSTIGMATA: PARASITENGONA) V. N. Belozerov St. Petersburg State University, Biological Research Institute, Stary Peterhof, 198504, RUSSIA, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: The paper presents a review of available data on some aspects of calyptostasy, i.e. the alternation of active (normal) and calyptostasic (regressive) stages that is characteristic of the life cycles in the parasitengone mites. There are two different, non- synonymous approaches to ontogenetic and ecological peculiarities of calyptostasy in the evaluation of this phenomenon and its significance for the development and life histories of Parasitengona. The majority of acarologists suggests the analogy between the alternating calyptostasy in Acari and the metamorphic development in holometabolous insects, and considers the calyptostase as a pupa-like stage. This is controversial with the opposite view emphasizing the differences between calyptostases and pupae in regard to peculiarities of moulting events at these stages. However both approaches imply the similar, all-level organismal reorganization at them. The same twofold approach concerns the ecological importance of calyptostasy, i.e. its organizing role in the parasitengone life cycles. The main (parasitological) approach is based on an affirmation of optimizing role of calyptostasy through acceleration of development for synchronization of hatching periods in the parasitic parasitengone larvae and their hosts, while the opposite (ecophysiological) approach considers the calyptostasy as an adaptation to climate seasonality itself through retaining the ability for developmental arrests at special calyptostasic stages evoked from normal active stages as a result of the life cycle oligomerization.

In pristine natural springs with permanent flow, water mites are nearly always present and usually display high diversity. This study aimed to determine whether significant differences in water mite assemblages between rheocrene (river-forming springs with dominant riffle habitats) and limnocrene (lake-forming springs with dominant pool habitats) karst springs could be detected in terms of species richness, diversity and abundance, but also in different ratios of specific synecological groups: crenobiont (exclusively found in springs), crenophilous (associated with springs) and stygophilous (associated with groundwater) water mite taxa. Our research was carried out on four limnocrenes and four rheocrenes in the Dinaric karst region of Croatia. Seasonal samples (20 sub-samples per sampling) were taken at each spring with a 200-µm net, taking into consideration all microhabitat types with coverage of at least 5%.

Abstract: Rhinonyssidae (Mesostigmata) is a family of nasal mites only found in birds. All species are hematophagous endoparasites, which may damage the nasal cavities of birds, and also could be potential reservoirs or vectors of other infections. However, the role of members of Rhinonyssidae as disease vectors in wild bird populations remains uninvestigated, with studies of the microbiomes of Rhinonyssidae being almost non-existent. In the nasal mite (Tinaminyssus melloi) from rock doves (Columba livia), a previous study found evidence of a highly abundant putatively endosymbiotic bacteria from Class Alphaproteobacteria. Here, we expanded the sample size of this species (two Citation: Osuna-Mascaró, C.; Doña, different hosts- ten nasal mites from two independent samples per host), incorporated contamination J.; Johnson, K.P.; de Rojas, M. The literature cited here now goes back to 2004. The databank of literature on Actinedida is becoming increasingly complete, presently comprising 4,939 papers on 1,455 species. This represents an increase by almost 10% (papers) and over 15% (species) this year alone. Since the literature of the Actinedida is vast, we have excluded as in past volumes two major taxa from the database: Eriophyidae and the paraphyletic group “Hydracarina”, since these are available elsewhere.

  • Ectoparasite Communities of Small-Bodied Malagasy Primates: Seasonal and Socioecological Influences on Tick, Mite and Lice Infestation of Microcebus Murinus and M
Klein et al. Parasites & Vectors (2018) 11:459 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13071-018-3034-y RESEARCH Open Access Ectoparasite communities of small-bodied Malagasy primates: seasonal and socioecological influences on tick, mite and lice infestation of Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis in northwestern Madagascar Annette Klein1,2, Elke Zimmermann2, Ute Radespiel2, Frank Schaarschmidt3, Andrea Springer1 and Christina Strube1* Abstract Background: Ectoparasitic infections are of particular interest for endangered wildlife, as ectoparasites are potential vectors for inter- and intraspecific pathogen transmission and may be indicators to assess the health status of endangered populations. Here, ectoparasite dynamics in sympatric populations of two Malagasy mouse lemur species, Microcebus murinus and M. ravelobensis, were investigated over an 11-month period. Furthermore, the animals’ body mass was determined as an indicator of body condition, reflecting seasonal and environmental challenges. Living in sympatry, the two study species experience the same environmental conditions, but show distinct differences in socioecology: Microcebus murinus sleeps in tree holes, either solitarily (males) or sometimes in groups (females only), whereas M. ravelobensis sleeps in mixed-sex groups in more open vegetation. Results: Both mouse lemur species hosted ticks (Haemaphysalis sp.), lice (Lemurpediculus sp.) and mites (Trombiculidae gen. sp. and Laelaptidae gen. sp.). Host species, as well as temporal variations (month and year), were identified as the main factors influencing infestation. Tick infestation peaked in the late dry season and was significantly more often observed in M. murinus (P = 0.011), while lice infestation was more likely in M. ravelobensis (P < 0.001) and showed a continuous increase over the course of the dry season.
