DPHA Product of the Year Guide • 1 2019 DPHA Product of the Year Award Judges DPHA Product of the Year Guide • www.dpha.net 1 2019 DPHA Product of the Year Award Judges Mary Jo Peterson, CMKBD, is an award-winning designer whose work has earned national recognition including induction into the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Hall of Fame. She is 2019 DPHA Product certified in kitchen, bath, aging-in-place, and active adult hous- ing design and has 25 years of experience. Peterson is also pres- of the Year Guide ident of Mary Jo Peterson, Inc., a firm that focuses on residential projects and provides design support to major homebuilders and product manufacturers nationwide. A universal design expert, she has authored multiple books on the subject and is a frequent national speaker and educator. She has developed and taught courses on sustainability in DPHA recognizes the kitchen/bath design and outdoor kitchen design. Peterson has been instrumental in the development of the original and recent versions of the Certified Aging in Place outstanding efforts and Specialist courses (CAPS) for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), as contributions of the 2019 well as NAHB’s Universal Design/Build course. Current editions of her books, Kitch- en Planning and Bath Planning, have just been published by Wiley for the NKBA, as DPHA Awards Committee. part of its professional resource library. Peterson is an active member of NKBA and NAHB, as well as of many building and design industry efforts to bring beautiful universal design to everyone. The firm also has acquired an expertise in home-con- nected technology, offering guidance, design and product speci- fication for smart home applications and products. Molly also helps train local designers, hosting lunch and learns and happy hour op- portunities for product reps to educate the design community to better understand new product launches and new lines. continued on page 3 2 DPHA Product of the Year Guide • www.dpha.net Alena Capra is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale, FL based firm, Alena Capra Designs. In addition to designing in South Florida, Alena also has worked on design projects nationwide, including New York, California, Arizona, Mas- sachusetts, Minnesota, and Georgia. She is a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer, whose projects have won national awards and been featured in national and regional media outlets. A graduate of the University of Miami and the Metropolitan Institute of Design, Alena was named one of four final- ists for the NKBA’s Professional of the Year Award in 2016, and most recently, one of six “Praiseworthy Picks,” for Kitchen & Bath Business magazine’s Person of the Year feature. In addition, she has been a member of the NKBA’s Certification Test Board, and has also served as a judge for the NKBA’s National Kitchen & Bath Design Competition. For the past five years, she has served as the Industry Ambassador for Coverings, the largest global tile and stone exhibition in North America. Beyond her work as a designer, Alena also spends time as an on-air personality, sharing her design expertise on local and national TV, on design-related educational videos, at home shows, showroom openings and other industry events. She has been featured on Lifetime, DYI, History Channel, H2, and she hosts a weekly design show on the local ABC affiliate in Miami/Fort Lauderdale, WPLG Local 10. Alissa Ponchione has worked in trade journalism for most of her career, writing for Nightclub & Bar, Hotel News Now and, currently, as executive editor of Hospitality Design magazine, a leading publication in the hospitality industry. She has a degree in journalism from Ohio University, and a master’s in literature from American University. It is similar to particleboard and medium-density fiberboard , but is more dense and much harder because it is made out of exploded wood fibers that have been highly compressed. It is referred to as Masonite in the USA because that was the first brand to be marketed there in the 1920s (25 years after it was invented in England). Unlike solid wood , it is very homogeneous with no grain. However, a wood veneer can be glued onto it to give the appearance of solid wood . Other overlays include formica and vinyl . It has many uses, such as a substrate, but unlike plywood and solid wood, it has no significant structural strength. It is used in construction , furniture , appliances , automobiles and cabinetry , and is popular among acrylic and oil painters as a painting surface due to its economical price (though it must be coated with gesso or canvas before use). It is also used as the final layer in many skateboard ramps and the half- pipe . Hardboard is produced in either a wet or dry process, which produce a panel called S1S or S2S respectively. The wet process only leaves one smooth side, but dry processed hardboard is smooth on both sides. Like other types of fiberboard, hardboard is susceptible to moisture damage and is generally not used outside.

Niemeyer, Extension Specialist, Interior Design/Home Furnishings Case goods is a term used to describe various types of cabinetry, chests, desks, bedsteads, tables and chairs. Wood Wood case goods may be solid wood, plywood, hardboard, particle board, veneer, "sem" and, in a few instances, paper. Furniture wood may be hard (walnut teak, mahogany, cherry, maple, birch, pecan, oak and' numerous exotics) or soft (pine, fir, redwood and spruce). Solid woods are used for legs, frames, rails, stretchers, corner posts and carved sections. Solid woods are strongest when cut and designed with the grain of the wood. Cross-grain designs are weaker. Moving from a damp to a dry climate may make solid wood split and shrink.
