The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.

Despacito”’S Crossovers
Petra R. Rivera-Rideau and Jericko Torres-Leschnik “The Colors and Flavors of My Puerto Rico”: Mapping “Despacito”’s Crossovers Journal of Popular Music, 31.1 (March 2019): 87-108. As relieved evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands disembarked the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, they waved Puerto Rican flags, shouted “Puerto Rico!” and “¡Puerto Rico se levanta!” (rise up, Puerto Rico!), and listened to salsa tunes and Luis Fonsi’s hit song, “Despacito”. After losing electricity and water in the wake of Hurricane Maria, over 3,800 evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands finally made it to the mainland. The majority of the arrivals were Puerto Rican residents who had never lived anywhere but the island, and some of the passengers were stranded tourists, grateful to return home. The ship, named the Adventure of the Seas, carried U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rican flags proudly on its balcony. “Despacito” and Marc Anthony salsa tunes played as evacuees were reunited with loved ones who eagerly awaited their arrival.1 Although salsa has long been associated with Puerto Ricanness, “Despacito” is a new symbol of Puerto Rican national identity.2 Fonsi’s hit thrust Puerto Rico into the limelight shortly before the hurricane. Just two days after Maria struck, Fonsi described how “the world is upside down.”3 As Fonsi performed his greatest hits, including “Despacito”, on his U.S. tour, he, crewmembers, and the audience struggled with being out of contact with family members on the island.4 One can’t help but see how “Despacito,” for better or for worse, has become a symbol of Puerto Rican identity.

Shakira’s Fundación “Pies Descalzos” and Costa Cruises together for the construction of a school in Colombia October 18, 2017 In Barcelona Shakira and Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises, announced the official start of the project with a symbolic "First brick" delivery ceremony. The school will be built in Cartagena (Colombia), with scheduled delivery in June 2019, providing education and support to 1,300 local students and the entire close communities involved. Genoa, 18 October 2017 – International superstar Shakira and Costa Cruises top management celebrated in Barcelona the official start of the donation project to the Fundación Pies Descalzos for the construction of a school in Colombia. The project is aimed at helping local children and their families and providing a quality education for disadvantaged children as well as a community center for their families. During the presentation event, Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises, delivered the first stone of the school, a brick that represent the "Brick of Happiness", to Shakira to symbolize the beginning of the project. During the sailing both Costa ship's crew and guests will have the chance to leave a dedication and a special message. The new school will be built in Cartagena between the districts "Ciudad del Bicentenario" and "Villa de Aranjuez", and is scheduled for delivery in June 2019, providing education and support to 1,300 local students from 6 to 18 years. It will follow the "public quality education" model provided by the Fundación Pies Descalzos, including also nutrition and health programs and special training activities for parents and the community at large.
