The film stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe and Oscar Isaac, and he follows a father with gentle manners who must face his demons after invading the house, shaking up his quaint neighborhood in 1959. It is based on a 1957 incident in Levittown, Pennsylvania, when a black-chain family moved to a previously fully white neighborhood, leading to racism and violence against the family. The main photo began in October 2016 in Los Angeles. Suburbicon premiered in the main section of the 74th Venice International Film Festival on September 2, 2017, then aired at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and was theatrically released in the United States on October 27, 2017. He received mixed reviews and criticism for his story, and earned only $12 million at the box office against his $25 million budget. Plot In 1959, the peaceful, all-white suburbicon neighborhood shocked by the arrival of an African-American family, Myers. Gardner Lodge, a mild-mannered family man, lives with his paralyzed wife Rose, their son Nicky and twin sister Rose Margaret in Suburbicon. One night, two robbers, Sloan and Louis, break into the Lodge family home, tie up the whole family and kill Rose with a chloroform overdose. Margaret's moving in to help take care of Nicky. Shortly after the death of her sister, Margaret begins to turn into Rose, dyeing her hair blonde and posing with Gardner. Logies are called to the police station to identify Sloan and Louis, but Gardner and Margaret say the police are not that they are, even when Nicky recognizes them as their mother's killers. Soon after, Sloan appears at Gardner's work and demands the money he owes him and Louis - payment for Rose's murder. When Gardner refuses to pay, Sloan and Louis plan to return to their home and kill Nicky and Margaret. As tensions between Suburbicon residents and their new African-American neighbors, charismatic insurance agent Bud Cooper arrives alone when Gardner is not at home and starts asking Margaret questions, looking to clarify the red flags in the life insurance claim made by Rose Gardner shortly after her death. Cooper tells Margaret that he suspects her and Gardner of killing Rose to gather on her policies, and Margaret kicks him out of the house. That night, as a protracted protest at the home of new African Americans turns into a riot, Cooper returns to talk directly to Gardner. He tells Gardner that he knows the nature of his insurance fraud plan and tries to blackmail them to give him his entire payout in exchange for his silence. Margaret poisons her coffee with Lee, and Gardner stabs him with a poker fireplace to finish it off. Gardner leaves to hide his body, behind Sloan's back. Margaret tries to poison Nicky with a sandwich and milk after he eavesdropped on her conversation with Cooper and asked for help from his uncle Mitch. Increasingly suspicious Nicky does not eat a sandwich and, as Margaret admits defeat, Louis strangles her to death before heading upstairs to deal with Nicky. Mitch arrives and rescues Nicky by shooting Louis dead. Mitch gives Nicky a gun and hides it in a closet before succumbing to the stabbing inflicted on Louis. On the way home from the disposal of Cooper's body, Gardner taunts Sloan, who is suddenly killed by a fire truck. When he gets home, he finds the bodies of Margaret, Mitch and Louis and pulls Nikki out of the closet. He offers Nicky a choice: he can go along with a plan to cash out the insurance claim and run to Aruba, or Gardner will kill him and blame him for his death Sloan and Louis. The next morning, Gardner is dead, absorbing Margaret's poisoned sandwich and milk during his conversation with Nicky. Nicky calmly goes outside to play ball with Andy, the son of an African-American family next door, after the family cleared the remnants of the previous night's riot. Starring Matt Damon as Gardner Lodge, Nicky's father Julianne Moore as Rose and Margaret Noah Jupe as Nicky Lodge, Gardner's son Oscar Isaac as Bud Cooper, insurance claims investigator Glenn Fleshler as Ira Sloan, killer Alex Hassell as Louis, Sloan's partner Megan Ferguson as June Jack Conley as Hightower Gary Basaraba as Michael Basaraba Joel and Ethan Coen originally wrote the screenplay for Suburbicon in 1986, shortly after the release of their film Blood Simple. The film was shot ten years later, combining two previously unrelated scripts, one a Cohen crime film, and one historical drama based on a true story The Myers family, the only black-chain family in white Levittown, Pennsylvania, has faced racial harassment and violence from other residents. On December 8, 2015, Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Josh Brolin joined the cast; Oscar Isaac and Woody Harrelson have also signed. On August 31, 2016, they were joined by Noah Jupe and Glenn Fleshler to play Damon's son and killer, respectively. On September 27, 2016, Harrelson said in an interview that he would not star in the film because of scheduling conflicts. In August 2017, it was reported that Brolin had been cut from the final montage of the film. Filming for Suburbicon began in Fullerton, 30 miles south of Los Angeles, in October 2016. It fell 59% in its second weekend to $1.2 million, finishing 13th at the box office. Critically responding to the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 28% based on 250 reviews, with an average rating of 4.94/10. Critical consensus site reads: A disappointing misfire for director George Clooney, Suburbicon tries to juggle social satire, racial commentary, and murder mystery - and eventually make a mess of all three. On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating of reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 42 out of 100, based on 49 critics, which indicates mixed or average reviews. Viewers interviewed by CinemaScore gave the film an average rating of D- on the A scale and F. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, Suburbicon is too obvious in its satirical depiction of questionable morality and social inequality behind the squeaky clean facade of postwar American life, though it's notable enough, and a clear improvement for Clooney on his latest directorial lineage.
