Oguchi1, Yasuhiko Tamura2, Sohyun Ahn1 and Momoko Ogawa1 Abstract The Buddhist sacred site of Taya Caves is a gem hidden underground in Yokohama, Japan. The caves were excavated and sculpted into bare rock by Shingon Buddhist monks from the Kamakura until the Edo period (thirteenth–nine- teenth century), and dedicated to ascetic training, rituals, and pilgrimage. They are a maze of halls and galleries decorated with hundreds of rock-cut reliefs, picturing deities and masters of Buddhism, temples and shrines, real and fantastic animals, vegetal motifs, mandalas, zodiac signs, family crests, etc. The history and rock art of Taya Caves and the urge to preserve their cultural value led to this frst-ever scientifc investigation, dealing with the stone properties, deterioration, and environmental setting. Textural, mineralogical, geochemical, and petrophysical investigations were combined with a microclimate monitoring and chemical analyses of groundwater and rainwater. The caves are exca- vated into a clay-rich fossiliferous siltstone, extremely soft and porous and highly susceptible to water-driven weath- ering. Water represents a constant in Taya Caves, either fowing, dripping, and stagnant; or rising from the subsoil; or related to the extremely high relative humidity. Crusts and eforescences represent important indicators of mineral dissolution and mobilization. The crusts are made of gypsum, crystallized from the dissolution of calcareous bioclasts and oxidation of pyrite, with minor calcite. The eforescences are composed of chlorides, phosphates, sulfates, and carbonates, possibly deriving from agrochemicals and the surface vegetation cover. The salt weathering is strictly related to the microenvironmental variables and physico-chemical properties of the phases and waters involved. Rock-water interaction is particularly damaging even considering just the physical mechanisms. The stone is strongly sensitive to water absorption, hygroscopic adsorption, and slaking: the stresses generated by in-pore water and air movement and the swelling clay minerals may lead to rapid disintegration, especially during cyclic processes. This research is expected to raise concerns about the safeguard of Taya Caves and support future monitoring and conser- vation plans, and to foster a wider promotion and valorization of this heritage site. From the time when, as an undergraduate, I read her book with Peter Ucko (Ucko & Rosenfeld 1967) that corrected the excesses of the structuralist approach to French cave “art” to the occasion of a visit to her home only months before she passed away, I found Andrée a model of good sense about all matters to do with all forms of rock “art”. She gave me and many others nothing but sound advice and managed to navigate between theory and data with more clear sight of her destination than most others. And she was, simply, one of the nicest people who ever became an archaeologist. She will be sorely missed. Pleistocene paintings and engravings are not art From time to time, we all worry about the use of the word “art” in connection with what we study (see review in Bradley 2009, Ch. 1). The images on rock and other surfaces that concern us here have some visual similarity with some of what is called art in other contexts, particularly when they are of great beauty (e.g. Chauvet et al. 1995; Clottes 2001). Yet the associations of art –paintings, sculptures and other works– over the last six hundred years (see e.g. Gombrich 1995) (or perhaps only three hundred according to Shiner 2001), mean that it is highly unlikely that any paintings or engraved images on rocks or in caves relate to social, economic, and cultural circumstances similar in any way to those of art in the twenty-first century.

With more than 30 decorated caves in the region, it is one of the world’s richest areas in Palaeolithic artwork. My project explores the social and cultural dimensions associated with non-figurative cave images. Non-figurative artwork accounts for any image that does not represent real world objects. My primary objectives are: (1) To produce the first detailed account of non-figurative cave art in Cantabria; (2) To examine the relationships between figurative and non-figurative images; and (3) To analyse the many cultural and symbolic meanings associated to non- figurative images. These speleothems appear to have been deposited over wall clay deposits, as well as forming part of flowstones. Structure of crusts is essentially amorphous but several manganese and iron oxides were identified like goethite and birnessite, though all occur with a low degree of crystallinity. In the outer layer of the crusts, alteration iron minerals appear that derive from previous minerals in a process probably mediated by microorganisms. EDX microanalyses report fairly high values of Fe and Mn in the crusts, though the Mn/Fe ratio varies considerably as a function of distance from the substrate/bedrock. The present study proposes a genetic model for crust speleothems in El Soplao, based on oscillations of the phreatic level. The origin of these deposits is related to mobilization, under phreatic conditions, of polymetallic sulfides in the host rock.

    The mammals and birds from the Gruta do Caldeirão, Portugal SIMON J. M. DAVIS1 ABSTRACTCaldeirão cave is 140 km north east of Lisbon near the town of Tomar. João Zilhão, of the University of Lisbon, excavated Caldeirão between 1979 and 1988. It con- tains a sequence of levels with associated cultural remains belonging to the Mousterian, Early Upper Palaeolithic, Solutrean, Magdalenian and Neolithic. Faunal remains from a wide spectrum of species were recovered by sieving. The most common large mammals include red deer, equids, goat, chamois, aurochs, and wild boar. Large carnivores, especially hyaena, were common in the older levels, and became scarcer or disappeared in the course of the cave’s occupation. Other carnivores include four species of felids, wolf, fox, bear and badger. Rabbit, hare and beaver were also present. Caldeirão provides us with an interesting zoo-archaeological puzzle. Did the cave function more as a hyaena den, at least in its early periods of occupation? The main indicators of hyaena activity include the presence of Crocuta remains, coprolites, and “semi-digested” bones. All these are most common in Mousterian and EUP levels. Burn marks are scarce in the Mousterian and EUP levels, but abundant in subsequent levels. The lithics to bone ratios are low in the Mousterian and EUP, but high in the Solutrean. Most remains of the equids and red deer are juvenile in the early levels and adult in the later ones — a possible reflection of hyaenas’ inability to hunt and/or bring back to the cave adults of these species. It is proposed that the cave functioned more as a hyaena den in the early levels and that subsequently hyaenas disappeared as people used the cave more intensively.

Karst modeling is the result of water disolving rocks formed by soluble minerals. This process is initially controlled by the interaction of a soluble solid phase (rock) and a fluid one (water), under favorable geolog- ical conditions for water circulation, favorable climate (temperatures and rainfall) and the necessary time for the karst process to take place on surface and in depth. The dissolution of soluble rocks with the afore- mentioned conditions creates a characteristic and very spectacular morphology, typical of the exokarst and the endokarst. The variety and geological heterogeneity of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands originate carbonate or evaporite rock formations in the different geologi- cal domains (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic) and in a different quantities, which are prone to be karsti- fied (Durán and López, 1989). The abundant karst sys- tems, modern or past, have a great scientific interest and a remarkable landscape diversity. Karst modeling originates many different relief ele- ments resulting in a great morphological diversity, from micro and mesoforms (channelings, grooves and cavities – lapiaz or lenars), to macroforms (karstic canyons, poljes, dolines). In this sense, karst processes are not only limited to the surface (exokarst), but its underground development is perhaps more impor- tant and undoubtedly more spectacular, as it creates caves, channels, sinkholes and a variety of dissolu- tion-precipitation structures (endokarst).
