Introduction the American Movie Industry Has Been Much Studied, As Befits What Is Not Only a Cultural Institution in Its Native
Introduction The American movie industry has been much studied, as befits what is not only a cultural institution in its native country, but a major export to other nations as well. Academic articles on film have frequently been critical or historical studies focused on one or a few films (Bordwell & Caroll 2012). At the same time, film studios and distributors, and the consultants they hire, have compiled detailed sales and marketing analyses of movie performance - but these studies remain proprietary and do not appear in the open literature. We submit that there is a clear need for studies of American movies as a whole, looking for trends in both the film industry and popular culture, and including as many movies as possible. Quantitative methods are ideal for such a study, because they make relatively few theoretical assumptions and easily scale up to incorporate many data sources. The key to such studies is to identify measurable quantities of interest (variables) that provide insight into research questions, and to use as large and complete a dataset as possible. The main research question we seek to answer in this paper is: What, if anything, are the relationships between a movie’s perceived artistic merit as ranked by critics, a movie’s quality as ranked by viewers, a movie’s gross box office take, and its release date? The relationship between these four categories is an important one. As much as one may decry the ties between art and commerce, they always exist, and perhaps nowhere more so than in film. Even as the word “film” itself becomes increasingly obsolete with the rising prominence of digital video, movies remain fantastically expensive, with professional product well beyond the reach of almost any one person to fund. -

Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings. -

MRAs and Their Impact on Decision-Making Sharon Allman and Jenny Lee-De Medeiros Abstract : The purpose of this research was to examine whether young adults (aged 18-32) look at user- and/or critic-generated movie review aggregates (MRAs) to decide which film to watch, or whether other factors impact their decision-making. The literature on this topic most notably shows a correlation between highly rated movies and better box office results, a preference for MRAs, and potential market benefits of MRAs. This research, which fo- cused on the North American context, contained both quantitative and qualitative methods in the form of an online survey, focus groups, and key informant interviews. The results in- dicate that MRAs are not the preferred method to decide what movie to watch, and instead factors such as family or friends’ recommendations and marketing decisions of the film most affect young adults’ decisions about which films to watch. The U.S. CDC has projected that this exposure will recruit more than six million new young smokers in the U.S. in this generation, of whom two million will die from tobacco-induced diseases. • More than half of U.S. top-grossing films released since 2002 include smoking,1 including 51 percent of films in 2019. The number of tobacco incidents in youth-rated films has grown by 63% since 2015. • By 2019, three-quarters of U.S. households subscribed to at least one video-in-demand (VOD) channel. Films comprise the majority of the titles offered on popular video-on-demand (VOD) services, while TV series account for the majority of programming hours they offer. • Per capita, in 2019 films were viewed fourteen times more on digital media than in theaters. Advance notice to parents • Neither the Motion Picture Association (MPA) nor TV Parental Guidelines (TVPG) treat tobacco as an explicit rating factor. The MPA only applies its bland “smoking” descriptors to 13 percent of top-grossing youth-rated films with tobacco content. • A survey of nine popular VOD services finds that three VOD services do not display film and TV ratings reasons with their video content and six other VOD services show ratings reasons only after the user selects a film or TV show and the video is rolling. -

Does Conflict of Interest Lead to Biased Coverage? Evidence from Movie Reviews∗ Stefano DellaVigna Johannes Hermle UC Berkeley and NBER UC Berkeley [email protected] [email protected] December 13, 2016 Abstract Media outlets are increasingly owned by conglomerates, inducing a conflict of interest: a media outlet can bias its coverage to benefit companies in the same group. We test for bias by examining movie reviews in media outlets owned by News Corp, such as the Wall Street Journal, and Time Warner, such as Time. We find higher ratings for 20th Century Fox movies in News Corp. outlets compared to movies by other studios. To disentangle bias from correlation of taste, we introduce and validate a novel matching procedure using individual movie ratings from online platforms. Using this procedure, we find no evidence of bias in News Corp. nor Time Warner outlets. We reject even small effects, such as bias of one extra star (out of four) every 13 movies. We test for differential bias when the return to bias is plausibly higher, examine bias by media outlet and by journalist, as well as editorial bias. We also consider bias by omission–whether media outlets are more likely to review highly-rated movies by affiliated studios–and conflict of interest within a movie aggregator. In none of these dimensions do we find evidence of bias. We relate to previous work and discuss three explanations for the lack of bias in our setting: high values of media reputation, organizational features in a conglomerate, and low returns to bias. ∗A previous version of this paper circulated in 2011 with the title ‘Does Media Concentration Lead to Biased Coverage? The first part has examined if it is possible to create a model for predicting and understanding the profitability of movies. Factors that influence the profitability have also been identified. This has been achieved through a regression analysis with data on movies from 2015-2017. A final multiple regression model has been created which explains 41% of the variability in the data. Significant influencing factors with at least a level of 5% significance have been identified such as the genres Horror and Musical, the MPAA-ratings PG and PG-13, the creative types Historical Fiction and Dramatization, Rotten Tomatoes Score and Sequel. The second part is an analysis on movie theaters as a distribution channel with respect to prof- itability for distribution companies using Porter's five forces. The five forces analysis suggests that movie theaters are a good distribution channel for studios which can provide mainstream movies while studios should consider releasing their low profile movies directly to streaming services since it might be more profitable.
