What do cnidarians all have in common? 1) Nematocysts – stinging cells – on tentacles and sometimes on the body a) Most can’t hurt you – like tape sticking to your finger b) Others can be more dangerous: i) Sea nettle, box jellies, Portuguese man-o-war Severe pain, even death, can occur after a sting 2) Radial symmetry 3) No gills or lungs – O 2 diffuses through the body into the cells 4) Simple sac – food comes in and waste goes out through the same opening 5) Simple “nerve net” – no central nervous system, though they do not have a brain, most have light sensitive organs, others well developed eyes Teachers’ Coral Workshop – v. 06 OCT 06 Page 1 of 16 2. Mixed in with the travelogues are some serious digressions all of which should give a healthy mix of aquatic hobby interests and conservational concerns. I hope that all who entered the Star Fisheries competition not only spotted the correct answer but also entered it into their sat-navs so that they could actually visit their premises and see their excellent fishes. I’d like to think that visitors to the Show, whether they’re just there for the day, or making a whole weekend of it, will spot me hanging around the Furnished Tanks and come up and say ‘Hello.’ With any luck, they may even say something nice about our efforts with the magazine or, even better, give me an article! As we went to Press, we learned that Anthony (Tony) Evans, editor of the old Petfish Monthly magazine and sponsor of the Aquarium Shows at Vincent Square’s Horticultural Hall, has passed away.

Magnificent Mangroves A Guide to the Ecology and Care of Ma n g ro v e s . by Julian Sprung Magnificent Mangroves A Guide to the ecology of mangroves, with husbandry req u i r ements for the Red Ma n g r ove, and its use in water filt r a t i o n . With this Guide I intend to provide a little natural history information about ma n g r oves, and stimulate interest in them as an ornamental plant for marine and fr eshwater aquariums, and ponds. The name "mangrove" does not refer to a specific group of related plants, but implies all salt tolerant tropical trees and shrubs that are adapted to living in or near the sea, with periodic tidal submergence of the roots or entire plant. Worldwide there are mo r e than 50 species of mangroves. Of these, the Red Mangrove, Rh i z o p h o r a ma n g l e , is among the most readily recognized, with its leg-like "prop roo t s . " Ma n g r oves' ability to adapt to a marine environment is managed by their capacity to conserve fres h w a t e r , and at least three salt reg u l a t o r y processes: secret i o n , exclusion, and accumulation. The supply of freshwater is limited in the salty soils of the intertidal zone where ma n g r oves thrive. As a result, they have developed various ways of limiting the loss of water through their leaves.
