Mixed in with the travelogues are some serious digressions all of which should give a healthy mix of aquatic hobby interests and conservational concerns. I hope that all who entered the Star Fisheries competition not only spotted the correct answer but also entered it into their sat-navs so that they could actually visit their premises and see their excellent fishes. It’s the least we can do to repay Andy Green’s generosity in sponsoring the Competition. We’ll also be looking forward to the Festival of Fishkeeping – now only a month away. I’d like to think that visitors to the Show, whether they’re just there for the day, or making a whole weekend of it, will spot me hanging around the Furnished Tanks and come up and say ‘Hello.’ With any luck, they may even say something nice about our efforts with the magazine or, even better, give me an article! As we went to Press, we learned that Anthony (Tony) Evans, editor of the old Petfish Monthly magazine and sponsor of the Aquarium Shows at Vincent Square’s Horticultural Hall, has passed away.

He called it “Nature’s System,” since it used marine aquarists everywhere sunlight and local unfiltered seawater, ocean sand, live rock, invertebrates, plants, and fishes. Its water circulation came from rising air bubbles escaping from airstones since 1983. Each newsletter and open-ended air hoses. Live rock had sponges and any other unsustainable animal brings you a variety of topical or plant matter removed before it was placed in his aquarium. He also carefully controlled its bioload, so system-incoming articles, including reviews, nutrients such as foodstuffs and animal product information, practical waste would not, he hoped, exceed the processing capacity of its internal bacteria. ideas, important case studies, Today we refer to that balanced approach as equilibrium—a state of balance between and interesting points of view— interacting or opposing energies that all to keep you in the know results in an energy-efficient environment. Nevertheless, I find many in the hobby and at the forefront of the thinking of equilibrium just as an example, marine hobby. Instant Ocean, because they want their slice of the ocean to depict a vision of an actual area in the wild.

Magnificent Mangroves A Guide to the Ecology and Care of Ma n g ro v e s . by Julian Sprung Magnificent Mangroves A Guide to the ecology of mangroves, with husbandry req u i r ements for the Red Ma n g r ove, and its use in water filt r a t i o n . With this Guide I intend to provide a little natural history information about ma n g r oves, and stimulate interest in them as an ornamental plant for marine and fr eshwater aquariums, and ponds. The name "mangrove" does not refer to a specific group of related plants, but implies all salt tolerant tropical trees and shrubs that are adapted to living in or near the sea, with periodic tidal submergence of the roots or entire plant. Worldwide there are mo r e than 50 species of mangroves. Of these, the Red Mangrove, Rh i z o p h o r a ma n g l e , is among the most readily recognized, with its leg-like "prop roo t s . " Ma n g r oves' ability to adapt to a marine environment is managed by their capacity to conserve fres h w a t e r , and at least three salt reg u l a t o r y processes: secret i o n , exclusion, and accumulation. The supply of freshwater is limited in the salty soils of the intertidal zone where ma n g r oves thrive. As a result, they have developed various ways of limiting the loss of water through their leaves.
