Lazio v Villarreal CF MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Michael Weiner (GER) Assistant Referee Markus Scheibel (GER) Assistant Referee Olaf Blumenstein (GER) Fourth Referee Stefan Trautmann (GER) UEFA Delegate Bernard Carrel (SUI) Referee Observer Muhittin Bosat (TUR) Reporter Francesco Corda (ITA) MATCH BACKGROUND Though Italian and Spanish clubs have met on a regular basis in UEFA club competitions since 1955, it is the first time that both S.S. Lazio and Villarreal CF have met each other. Vast experience A Spanish club provided the opposition for Lazio’s finest achievement, when, coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson, they won the last UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998/99 with a 2-1 win over RCD Mallorca at Villa Park. This will be the 12th game between Lazio and Spanish clubs in UEFA club competitions and Lazio have four wins, five defeats and two draws from the previous matches. The 2003/04 Coppa Italia winners have made a resolute start to this season’s campaign with two 3-0 wins over Ukrainian club FC Metalurh Donetsk to reach the group stage. Strong impression Villarreal made a strong impression in last season’s UEFA Cup, reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winners Valencia CF 1-0 on aggregate with only a Mista penalty separating the sides. On their way to the latter stages, Villarreal met AS Roma in the fourth round winning 3-2 on aggregate after Sonny Anderson won the tie with a goal in a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.

  • A Study of Institutional Racism in Football
THE BALL IS FLAT THE BALL IS FLAT: A STUDY OF INSTITUTIONAL RACISM IN FOOTBALL By ERIC POOL, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Eric Pool, September 2010 MASTER OF ARTS (2010) McMaster University (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Ball is Flat: A Study ofInstitutional Racism in Football AUTHOR: Eric Pool, B.A. (University of Waterloo) SUPERVISOR: Professor Chandrima Chakraborty NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 127 ii Abstract: This project examines the ways in which the global mobility of players has unsettled the traditional nationalistic structure of football and the anxious responses by specific football institutions as they struggle to protect their respective political and economic hegemonies over the game. My intention is to expose the recent institutional exploitation of football's "cultural power" (Stoddart, Cultural Imperialism 650) and ability to impassion and mobilize the masses in order to maintain traditional concepts of authority and identity. The first chapter of this project will interrogate the exclusionary selection practices of both the Mexican and the English Football Associations. Both institutions promote ethnoracially singular understandings of national identity as a means of escaping disparaging accusations of "artificiality," thereby protecting the purity and prestige of the nation, as well as the profitability of the national brand. The next chapter will then turn its attention to FIFA's proposed 6+5 policy, arguing that the rule is an institutional effort by FIF A to constrain and control the traditional structure of football in order to preserve the profitability of its highly "mediated and commodified spectacle" (Sugden and Tomlinson, Contest 231) as well as assert its authority and autonomy in the global realm.

TECHNICAL REPORT 2008/09 Title in Arial bold 22 pt Subtitle in Arial regular 14 pt ENGLISH SECTION PARTIE FRANÇAISE DEUTSCHER TEIL STATISTICS PHOTO: POTTS / PA WIRE / PA IMAGES TECHNICAL REPOrt This report has been published as a record of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League, which was the competition’s seventeenth season. In addition to the factual and statistical data that make it a valuable reference work, it contains analysis, reflections and debating points which, it is hoped, will give technicians food for thought and, by highlighting tendencies and trends at the peak of professional football, also offer coaches who are active at the development levels of the game information that may be helpful in terms of working on the qualities which will be needed by the UEFA Champions League performers of the future. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand can only watch as Lionel Messi jumps just far enough upwards and backwards to deliver the looping header which put FC Barcelona 2-0 up in the 70th minute of the final in Rome. THE ROADS THAT LED TO ROME Distance is meant to lend perspective, but it can also blur the vision. The fact that the neutrals who, when the group stage kicked off in September, predicted a Manchester United v Barcelona final were watching it just over eight months later gives the impression that the 124-match pilgrimage to Rome had been a relentless march towards a foregone conclusion. That was by no means the case. It is easy to forget that FC Barcelona won only half of their home games, or that they were being counted out during the final seconds of their heavyweight semi-final contest with Chelsea – only for Andrés Iniesta to produce the stunning drive which earned a trip to Rome.

May 2018 Working Paper ABSTRACT The purpose of the presented research is to advance the superstar literature on the aspect of superstar’s characteristics and value. Typically, superstar research is faced with one problem: They apply the same criteria to determine who their superstars are as to describe them later because they lack “an objective measure of star quality” (Krueger, 2005, p.18). To avoid this complication, the author chose to study Major League Soccer’s (MLS) designated players as this setting present a unique, as discrete, assignment of star status. MLS has formally introduced stars in 2007 under the designated player (DP) rule which delivers over 100 star-observations in the last ten years to investigate MLS strategy of star employment. The insights from this data set demonstrate which characteristics are relevant, whether MLS stars can be categorized as Rosen or Adler stars, and what the MLS pays for and in this sense values most. A cluster analysis discovers a sub group of ten stars that stand out from the others, in this sense superstars. A two-stage regression model confirms the value stemming from popularity, leadership qualities, previous playing level, age and national team experience but refutes other typical performance indicators like games played and goals scored or position.
