College and career readiness activities will be embedded into this activity period. The additional instructional period was made possible due to the elimination of a “split lunch” period. In the new high school scheduling configuration, there will be four lunch periods rather than five, with each lunch period being forty minutes in length. The elimination of the “split lunch” will provide high school students with additional time to enjoy their lunch while also affording them the opportunity to take an additional instructional elective relative to their interests and/or career path. Instructional periods under the new schedule will now be equal and consist of forty minutes. The traditional concept of “homeroom” will be eliminated with students reporting directly to their first period class. First period will be extended an additional four minutes in order to accommodate tasks previously assigned to homeroom teachers (attendance, pledge of allegiance, announcements, etc.). Students attending the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center (CWCTC) will gain an additional thirty-five minutes daily with this new schedule.
