Tolar Junior High and High School Dress Code

Personal appearance is important. Modesty will be the dominant feature in all clothing. Behavior, attitude and community standards take precedence over individual clothing and hairstyle. The campus principal is the final authority concerning the propriety of clothes, hairstyle, and jewelry. Clothing • Clothes must be appropriately sized (not excessively tight); • No cleavage-revealing tops; • Exposure of midriffs (front or back) and low cut shirts are prohibited; • No holes in clothing that reveal skin in shirts, or pants above the knees (patches must cover all holes); • Shirts must not be backless or completely shoulder-less (partial shoulder is permitted); • Female students may wear ͞sheer tops͟ provided that the clothing underneath is in accordance with school dress code. Example: No exposed spaghetti straps, bra, midriffs, tube top; • All shorts must be no shorter than 4 inches above the top of the knee cap. No running shorts allowed. Examples: Nike wind shorts and similar loose fitting shorts; • Tights/athletic pants/yoga pants/jeggings must be accompanied by a shirt or dress that adequately covers the entire bottom; • No sagging or oversized clothing; • No pajamas; • Visible underwear, spaghetti strap tanktops, and muscle shirts will not be permitted; • Sleeveless shirts must have a collar or t-shirt type collar and be hemmed around the sleeves. Straps on sleeveless shirts must be at least 1 inch.; • Articles of clothing advertising (or mimicking advertising of) alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, depicting killing or violence or those with obscene or questionable printing or signs on them will not be permitted.

Hair • Beards, goatees, and mustaches are not permitted. For skin conditions preventing shaving with a razor, a note will be required from a medical doctor – verifying the limitations of the condition. The note must be renewed each 6-months. If a verifiable skin condition exists, the student(s) must clip the facial hair as close to the skin as possible. In the rare occurrence that the facial hair cannot be shaved, the clipped hair must never exceed a length of ½ inch above the skin. • Sideburns cannot extend below the ear lobe (for males); • Hair must be worn above the eyebrow, not below the bottom of the collar and above the bottom of the ear lobe; • Unnatural or unusual hair coloring for male and female students will not be permitted; • Building administrators reserve the right to determine appropriate hairstyles. For example, boys shall not wear ponytails, bandanas, dreadlocks, Mohawks, etc. Mohawks are defined as hair that is spiked up on the top with the sides of the head shaved. Fauxhawks however are acceptable. This is defined as hair that is spiked up on top of boys’ heads with the hair on the sides of the head remaining appropriate length and not shaved.

Miscellaneous • Any form of dress or hairstyle which is considered contrary to good hygiene or is distractive in appearance and detrimental to the purpose of conduct of school will not be permitted; • All clothing is to be worn in an appropriate manner and in good repair; • Sunglasses or colored glasses that obscure the eye and interfere with communication are not permitted (Administration approval for wearing if a medical requirement and doctor’s verification); • Ear Studs, gauges, and earrings for male students will not be permitted; • Tattoos must be covered; • Ornamentation and visible body piercing will not be permitted, with the exception of earrings for female students only; • Hats, bare feet, and caps are prohibited in building.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
