Clinical and psychological evaluations of the outcomes of GRS have focused primarily on the individual benefits of the surgery and on the aesthetic or functional aspects of newly created genitalia. Left out of medical and social science research is attention to the patient’s hopes for social gains and benefits following GRS. Critically assessing the current biomedical model of transsexualism and its treatment, this study considers not only the different meanings GRS holds for patients (contrasting life-world concerns with biomedical concerns), but also explores what GRS is expected to contribute to the everyday experiences of transsexuals. Through participant ii observation and person-centered interviews, I examine what patients expect to gain from GRS socially, what kinds of hopes they have invested in the surgery, how they intend to integrate their past and present gendered histories, and whether they feel that undergoing GRS will significantly improve their social status. This study thus offers a patient-centered perspective on the meaning of surgical intervention for a socially stigmatized condition. I find that while GRS can provide individual benefits for transsexuals through eliminating body dysphoric feelings through the surgical alignment of the mind with the body, the surgery does not, and cannot, eliminate their social history of transsexual embodiment. The socially liminal positions that many transsexuals experience prior to surgery are thus likely to remain unchanged as the main barrier to social acceptance or social equality lies primarily in the history of gendered embodiment and not in the bio-medical assumption of mind-body disjuncture. iii The dissertation of Muriel Vernon is approved. (August 2012) Jeremy Russell Miller, B.A., University of Arkansas; M.A., University of Arkansas Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joshua Heuman Dr. Aisha Durham Transgender representations generally distance the transgender characters from the audience as objects of ridicule, fear, and sympathy. This distancing is accomplished through the use of specific narrative conventions and visual codes. In this dissertation, I analyze representations of transgender individuals in popular film comedies, thrillers, and independent dramas. Through a textual analysis of 24 films, I argue that the narrative conventions and visual codes of the films work to prevent identification or connection between the transgender characters and the audience. The purpose of this distancing is to privilege the heteronormative identities of the characters over their transgender identities. This dissertation is grounded in a cultural studies approach to representation as constitutive and constraining and a positional approach to gender that views gender identity as a position taken in a specific social context.

    THE CAGED BIRD SINGS OF FREEDOM: WHY ALLOWING SEX-REASSIGNMENT SURGERY FOR TRANSGENDER LIFE PRISONERS FACILITATES REHABILITATION AND RECONCILIATION BY: ALEXANDER KIRKPATRICK* ABSTRACT In October 2015, California became the first state in U.S. history to implement guidelines for transgender state prisoners to petition for gender- affirming and sex-reassignment surgeries. These guidelines raise the question why California would authorize gender-affirming surgeries for prisoners serving life-sentences, yet struggle to implement laws to make the same surgeries more accessible to law-abiding citizens. While the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation ("CDCR") likely implemented the radical SRS policy to abide by Eighth Amendment protections for transgender inmates suffering from severe gender dysphoria-inmates to whom SRS coverage is medically necessary and constitutionally required-this Note outlines four alternative justifications * Class of 2017, University of Southern California Gould School of Law, B.A. Political Science, University of Colorado at Boulder. This Note is dedicated to my client, Amelia, who shared her vulnerable and inspiring story of incarceration, transition, and hope. Amelia is fighting for freedom every day in a California male institution. Abstract: Gender related genitourinary surgeries are vitally important in the management of gender dysphoria. Vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty and their associated surgeries help patients achieve their main goal of aligning their body and mind. These surgeries warrant careful adherence to reconstructive surgical principles as many patients can require corrective surgeries from complications that arise. Peri- operative assessment, the surgical techniques employed for vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, metoidioplasty, and their associated procedures are described. The general reconstructive principles for managing complications including urethroplasty to correct urethral bulging, vaginl stenosis, clitoroplasty and labiaplasty after primary vaginoplasty, and urethroplasty for strictures and fistulas, neophallus and neoscrotal reconstruction after phalloplasty are outlined as well.     'Writing' Media: an Investigation of Practical Production in Media Education by Secondary School Students

    'WRITING' MEDIA: AN INVESTIGATION OF PRACTICAL PRODUCTION IN MEDIA EDUCATION BY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. BY JULIAN SEFTON-GREEN Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment ofthe requirements for the degree ofDoctor ofPhilosophy in Education Institute ofEducation, University ofLondon January 1998 Abstract Chapter 1 provides an historical analysis ofthe role ofpractical production in media education in England. It discusses its varied educational aims. The need to consider practical work as a form of writing is advanced. Traditional notions of media education have possessed few theories of language and learning and have failed to conceptualise a relationship between critical understanding and making media. Discussion of 'media literacy' and 'visual literacy' is followed by an exploration of models of the writing process and the limits of the metaphor ofliteracy when applied to forms of media production. Selective accounts of theories ofwriting instruction (drawing upon models of the writing process), conclude that there are problems with the metaphor of media literacy. By contrast Cultural Studies has conceptualised creative productions by young people in terms that evoke notions of the written. The central research question is formulated in Chapter 2: what sense can we make ofmedia production using theories of writing; and thus by implication what change to such theories might be made using data drawn from educational research on media production? In Chapter 3 discussion of methodological questions draws attention to two traditions: Cultural Studies work on media audiences. and classroom based action research. Different methods of textual analysis are applied to media productions by young people in the next four chapters (4-7) within the specific histories of several classrooms in North London schools.
