  • Watercolor Supplies List
WATERCOLOR CLASS SUPPLY LIST Each class participant is expected to supply his or her own painting supplies. If you are an experienced watercolorist, please bring your own selected art products. If you are a beginner, kindly refer to the notes below and be sure to come to class with all the appropriate supplies. You can shop the local retail stores (Utrechts in Boston and Cambridge, Dick Blick Studio in Boston, or The Art Store in Avon), but my recommendation is to consider buying from Cheap Joes’s Art Stuff on line at www.cheapjoes.com or by phone at 1-800- 227-2788. As watercolor specialists, they have a knowledgeable staff, their own line of quality “American Journey” products, and good prices. In particular, if you are starting from scratch and need everything, be sure to ask about their SETS! PAINT – I prefer Winsor & Newton “Artists” Watercolor in tubes, but the Winsor & Newton “Cotman” brand is less expensive as a student grade. If you just starting off, see if it makes sense to purchase a packaged SET of color tubes. For the most economical option, a palette of “pan” color paints will suffice. PALETTE – I own a two-piece, white plastic “Robert Wood” palette, which has 24 paint wells and a multitude of areas for mixing color. The choice of selected paints is always a subjective decision. The most important colors in my own experience include Olive Green, Hooker’s Dark Green, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Blue, Cerulean Blue, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Brown Madder Alizarin, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Payne’s Gray and Sepia.

(2007). Boletes from Belize and the Dominican Republic. Fungal Diversity 27: 247-416. This paper presents results of surveys of stipitate-pileate Boletales in Belize and the Dominican Republic. A key to the Boletales from Belize and the Dominican Republic is provided, followed by descriptions, drawings of the micro-structures and photographs of each identified species. Approximately 456 collections from Belize and 222 from the Dominican Republic were studied comprising 58 species of boletes, greatly augmenting the knowledge of the diversity of this group in the Caribbean Basin. A total of 52 species in 14 genera were identified from Belize, including 14 new species. Twenty-nine of the previously described species are new records for Belize and 11 are new for Central America. In the Dominican Republic, 14 species in 7 genera were found, including 4 new species, with one of these new species also occurring in Belize, i.e. Retiboletus vinaceipes. Only one of the previously described species found in the Dominican Republic is a new record for Hispaniola and the Caribbean.

GYRFALCON BREEDING BIOLOGY IN ALASKA By Travis L. Booms RECOMMENDED: Advisory Committee Co-Chair Advisory Committee Co-Chair Chair, Department of Biology & Wildlife APPROVED: Dean, College of Natural Science and Mathematics Dean of the Graduate School Date GYRFALCON BREEDING BIOLOGY IN ALASKA A DISSERTATION Presented to the Faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Travis L. Booms Fairbanks, Alaska August 2010 iii Abstract This dissertation addresses specific research needs identified by a panel of experts on Gyrfalcon biology and conservation convened on 3 September, 2003 at the Raptor Research Foundation Scientific Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. The first chapter is a significant update and revision of the 1994 Gyrfalcon Birds of North America (BNA) species account, using all published papers and available grey literature from 1994 - 2007 and personal expertise from over 3,000 hours of coordinated observations. The second chapter reports results from a spatially explicit model, based on the best available compiled data from Alaska, that predicted Gyrfalcon breeding distribution and population size across Alaska. The model predicted that 75% and 7% of the state had a relative index of nest occurrence of <20% and >60%, respectively. Areas of high predicted occurrence primarily occurred in northern and western Alaska. Using environmental variables, the model estimated the size of the breeding Gyrfalcon population in Alaska is 546 ± 180 pairs. In Chapter 3, I used repeated aerial surveys to estimate detection probabilities of cliff-nesting raptors from fixed-wing aircrafts and helicopters. Detection probabilities ranged from 0.79 – 0.10 and varied by species, observer experience, and study area/aircraft type.
