Results will likely change as we continue to refine and extend the analysis. Abstract We explore the nature and impact of creative reuse in the production of digital media by ana- lyzing the output of an innovative online music sharing community, ccMixter. The dataset is of great significance because this is one of only a handful of online communities which do not only allow for the sharing of user-generated content, but also track the evolution of content af- ter it has been published online and encourage reuse of the content for the production of new works. All content on ccMixter is legally uploaded, copyrighted, and licensed under Creative Commons. Much has been written about the birth of a new “remix culture” on the Internet and how collaborative Web 2.0 technology has led to an explosion of user-generated content. But very little is known about the process of developing digital media in an open and collaborative fashion, the incentives of participating authors, and the outcomes of their actions. Based on our earlier studies of Creative Commons licensing [1] and the analysis of this unique online community we hope to shed more light on the structure and dynamics of such activities by pro- viding some of the first visualizations ever of large-scale remixing activity and presenting our preliminary findings. -

Jukefox is a special music player running on Google's smart phone operating system Android. Free Legal Resources Many musicians choose to release their songs under Creative Commons licenses, which give you the legal right to do things like use their music in your videos. What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons is a new system, built upon current copyright law, that allows you to legally use “some rights reserved” music, movies, images, and other content — all for free. CC offers free copyright licenses that anyone can use (without a lawyer) to mark their creative work with the freedoms they want it to carry. For instance, a musician would use a Creative Commons license to allow people to legally share her songs online, make copies for friends, or even use them in videos or other compositions. Can I use any song with a CC license on it? Almost — you need to make sure that what you want to do with the music is OK under the terms of the particular Creative Commons license it’s under. CC- licensed music isn’t free for all uses, only some — so make sure to check out the terms (you can find these by clicking on each song’s license icon). Most importantly, you need to use music that is not licensed under a No Derivative Works license. This means that the musician doesn’t want you to change, transform, or make a derivative work using their music. Under CC licenses, synching the music to images amounts to transforming the music, so you can’t legally use a song under a CC No Derivative Works license in your video. Also, make sure to properly credit the musician and the track, as well as express the CC license the track is under. -

Corruption Exposed & Composed - ccMixter Remixes Rootstriker Larry Lessig Musicians ‘Strike the Root’ with Songs & Mixes on Universal Stories of Corruption April 8, 2011 (San Diego, CA) – ccMixter.org’s international music community will ‘Strike the Root’ with music, in support of Dr. Lawrence Lessig’s new Rootstrikers project. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root,” Dr. Lessig has contributed recordings on the subject of corruption in society and government to ccMixter under Creative Commons licenses. Along with Lessig’s spoken word, ccMixter composers will contribute original songs, poetry and music to be produced and remixed – sharing experiences of corruption and its impact, worldwide. In Boston today at the National Conference for Media Reform, Dr. Lessig announced his Rootstrikers Project and website, rootstrikers.org, where citizens are invited to share personal stories of corruption and how it’s impacted their own lives. At ccMixter.org, anyone can participate creatively in the ‘Strike the Root Remix Project’ – by recording a poem, story, song, or sample for remixing under Creative Commons license. “We need a community of rootstrikers--activists and creators--working together toward a shared goal,” said Dr. Lessig. “The root of our political evils is money. Rootstrikers and the Strike the Root Remix projects give us a chance to explore corruption and what we can do to fix it. " ccMixter, the most prominent experiment in free music culture, was co-founded by Lessig in 2004 with a series of remix contests in hosted by Creative Commons in conjunction with Wired Magazine featuring The Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Cee-Lo, and other innovative musicians. -

Creative Commons’ Mission Creative Commons’ mission is to enable the legal sharing and reuse of cultural, educational, and scientific works. To this end, we offer free and easy-to-use tools to creators and the public to assist them in harnessing the creativity that new technologies make possible — a read/write culture in which we can engage with the content that surrounds us, as distinct from a read–only culture in which we can only passively receive content. This paper provides a brief overview of what Creative Commons offers, what we have achieved so far and what we are working to achieve in the future. II. The Problem Creative Commons Seeks To Address Creative Commons was founded in 2001 to address the fol- lowing problem — on the internet there’s no way to “use” a work without simultaneously making a “copy.” This implicates copyright law — the law that grants creators exclusive rights to control certain activities in relation to their work. Due to the nature of modern technologies, people are connected in ways never before possible. Now the public can distribute works in a variety of formats of a high, and often, professional quality and can work collaboratively across boundaries of time and space. In addition, digital technologies offer new ways to create, share and remix new, derivative, and collective works. All of these activities implicate the exclusive rights of the copyright owner. As a result (and, of course, subject to fair use), any digital or online use of a work could be said to first require permission. -
