Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff (“The Mads” From July 1, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Chris Gersbeck | [email protected] | 718-986-8267 ​ ​ Trace Beaulieu And Frank Conniff (“The Mads” From Mystery Science Theater 3000) Announce Livestream ​ Screening Of Ed Wood’s Glen Or Glenda ​ Portion of Proceeds to Benefit NAACP Empowerment Programs Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff, known to fans of the cult TV series Mystery Science ​ ​ ​ ​ Theater 3000 as “Dr. Clayton Forrester” and “TV’s Frank” respectively, have announced a ​ special livestream screening of Ed Wood’s Glen or Glenda on Tuesday, July 21 @ 8pm ET, ​ ​ ​ ​ with the two comedians (collectively known as “The Mads”) riffing over the 1953 dud. The show will mark Beaulieu & Conniff’s first time performing together this year, after The Mads’ 2020 tour dates were cancelled due to COVID-19. Tickets are on sale now for $10. ​ ​ “If you’ve been social distancing yourself from Glen or Glenda, Trace and I are giving the ​ ​ all-clear to watch this classic film,” said Conniff. “Of all the movies we’ve riffed, from MST3K to Cinematic Titanic and our own live shows, this is our favorite. Join us!” The Mads Are Back: Glen or Glenda will broadcast live via a private YouTube link that will be ​ sent to ticket purchasers an hour prior to showtime. A percentage of the proceeds from the event will benefit NAACP Empowerment Programs, who engage primarily in training, ​ ​ ​ education, and advocacy at the national and local levels. Mystery Science Theater 3000 has its roots in Minneapolis, when it premiered on local affiliate ​ ​ ​ KTMA-TV (now WUCW) on November 24, 1988. Comedian Joel Hodgson created and starred in the TV show, which found him playing a janitor in the “not-too-distant future” imprisoned aboard The Satellite of Love, forced to watch a series of bad movies in an effort to drive Joel ​ ​ and his robot friends insane. The show was eventually picked up by Comedy Central and later the Sci-Fi Channel, before being rebooted by Hodgson in 2017 for Netflix. Beaulieu, who also provided the voice of “Crow T. Robot” during the show’s initial run, portrayed evil mad scientist “Dr. Clayton Forrester,” while Conniff acted as Forrester’s lab assistant and sidekick, known as “TV’s Frank.” Both Beaulieu and Conniff were writers on the show and have continued to collaborate since leaving MST3K, as members of the ​ ​ similarly-themed live show Cinematic Titanic, and also as co-hosts of the weekly movie ​ ​ podcast Movie Sign with The Mads. ​ ​ In 2015, Beaulieu and Conniff began touring movie theaters throughout the country as The ​ Mads Are Back, offering their signature brand of quick-witted commentary (known to MST3K ​ ​ fans as “riffing”) over numerous B-movies. Glen or Glenda, named by critic Leonard Maltin as “possibly the worst movie ever made,” is Ed ​ Wood’s semi-autobiographical docudrama which follows Glen (portrayed by Wood), a man who wrestles with his desire to cross-dress as his alter-ego, Glenda. The film, which opens with a bizarre performance by horror legend Bela Lugosi, has been ridiculed for its cheap production values and nonsensical narrative ever since its release. The troubled production of Glen or Glenda was chronicled in Tim Burton’s 1994 film Ed Wood. ​ ​ ​ “Glen or Glenda might be the worst movie ever made but it is also a film with great heart and compassion for the subject matter,” said Beaulieu. “I could be wrong. I’ve only seen it 50 times.” The Mads will also be conducting a Q&A with fans after the screening for as long as time allows. Schuyler All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Camp scholarship remains vague. While academics don’t shy away from writing about this form, most exemplify it more than define it. Some even refuse to define it altogether, arguing that any such attempt causes more problems than it solves. So, I ask the question, can we define camp via its structure, theme and character types? After all, we can do so for most other genres, such as the slasher film, the situation comedy or even the country song; therefore, if camp relies upon identifiable character types and proliferates the same theme repeatedly, then, it exists as a narrative system. In exploring this, I find that, as a narrative system, though, camp doesn’t add to the dominant discursive system. Rather, it exists in opposition to it, for camp disseminates the theme that those outside of heteronormativity and acceptability triumph not in spite of but because of what makes them “different,” “othered” or “marginalized.” Camp takes many forms. So, to demonstrate its reliance upon a certain structure, stock character types and a specific theme, I look at the overlaps between seemingly disperate examples of this phenomenon.

    Fun Facts about CITYWIDE Prince’s album and film titles, Graffiti Bridge, came from an actual railroad bridge in northern Eden Prairie that OPEN HOUSE crossed over Valley View Road. It was legal to spray graffiti on the bridge, and when the movie came out, a large mural of Prince was featured on the bridge. The bridge was torn down in the early 1990s when Valley View Road needed to be widened. Prince’s Paisley Park was originally planned to be built on property he purchased in Eden Prairie, he is still listed as the owner of the property. The cult television comedy series, Mystery Science Theater 3000, was originated here by Joel Hodgson, and Eden Prairie is home to the show’s production company Best Brains, Inc. The cult movie comedy Mallrats was filmed at the Eden Prairie Center mall (before remodeling). In the movie Fargo, the character Mike Yanagita lives in Eden Prairie and comments on the city’s school district while dining with Marge at the Radisson. Green Acres opened in 2013 as an event center. Previously the Goodrich-Ramus barn, Green Acres is the oldest standing barn in Eden Prairie and an important part of Minnesota history. In addition to its outstanding academic reputation, Eden Prairie High School is renowned for its athletics program that has been recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the top programs in the country.     Bad For Good William D. Routt Beyond good and evil [1] Even before Tim Burton made a movie based on his life, almost everyone knew two things about Edward D. Wood, Jr. The first was that he directed "the worst movie ever made", Plan 9 From Outer Space (1956). The second was that he was a transvestite. The two things seem to be linked in some way - or, at least, they often crop up together, as they did just now. And, when you think about it, that is strange.[2] But then, reactions to Ed Wood do tend towards the strange. I remember when I first saw Plan 9. It was on television. In fact, I cannot imagine seeing an Ed Wood movie anywhere else but on television; they were made-for-TV, direct-to-video, before such forms were invented. It was late at night (of course). I was tired and the experience was a hallucinatory one. The film did not seem to have a plot. It opened with "Criswell Predicts", for God's sake! Now and then there were shots of Bela Lugosi stalking with his cape over his eyes (not Lugosi at all, as I later learned) and Vampira staring through creepy branches and Tor Johnson menacing with his arms raised and his mouth open. Cadillac hubcaps (or paper plates or plastic models - anyhow, not flying saucers) spinning across the sky. A tremendous amount of stock footage. Meandering pointless dialogue. Nothing happened: it was a movie of pure effect. For years afterward I described this film of my imagining, whose title I had forgotten, to people who were not interested.

Any, or all of you; whenever mutually convenient. There will be snacks. One of you has already done so. She even rejoined your august group for more of your own work, none worse for the wear. (We hope… But please do check with her.) We tried to get a game going already, but to be fair… you needed to launch before doing anything else. And that you did, with great fanfare and success. Bravo, sirs. And lady. Now that you’re very much afloat — we’d like you all to know, on the record*, that our door** is open. Come and play. We’re not going away anytime soon, and neither are you. Shooting one of your episodes takes longer, with its visual component, we understand. But when your schedule lightens up, and you’re between shoots, come do a Rifftrax with us in the meantime. Any of you — even Mary Jo. (Really MJ, we’ll have an actual chair for you this time.) Lots of movies out there, lots of riffer combinations possible, and many schedule­friendly shorts still beg for riffing. We could even do a flash animation of some sort. It boggles the mind! To repeat: there will be snacks. Of fairly decent quality. Not amazing, but really… fairly decent, all in all. Life is too short to pretend that our fellow MST3K alums don’t exist. That might be awkward anyway, if we run into each other at some big event wearing the same outfit.
