Hornet Squadron, who figured prominently in Robinson's previous novel, "A Piece of Cake", is now stationed in North Africa, where they are tasked with fighting both Rommel's Afrika Korps and the Luftwaffe. This novel is peopled with a wide array of characters from both sides of the war who bring out both the life and death intensity of combat, as well as the absurdist nature of war itself. Reader, prepare yourself for an enjoyable experience. Jul 25, Matthew Willis rated it really liked it. Typically well written and compelling stuff from Robinson. Don't expect stirring tales of patriotism and sentimentality - this is war at its grubbiest, from the desert dust that penetrates everything, to the petty motivations that lead to casual, pointless suffering and death. Robinson has that rare knack of presenting a A Good Clean Fight that could barely be more anti-war in its sentiment, while dragging the reader along with the pulse-pounding excitement of the action. Hornet Squadron is back, and eve Typically A Good Clean Fight written and compelling stuff from Robinson. Hornet Squadron is back, and even more screwed up than they were in the Battle of France. Throw in an egotistical SAS commander and a meticulous German intelligence officer, and the result is frequently explosive. View 1 comment. Sep 13, Robert Hill rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Lovers of freedom. Great read for WWII buffs. By land and air in the deserts of North Africa. Superb character development. What a way to end a book!! It shouldn't have taken me so long to read. Snappy dialogue full of biting sarcasm and wit. Brutal war where death comes without warning realistically. There is nothing bad I can say about this story. Loved it. A Good Clean Fight of the characters felt as real as the setting. Robinson is a master of the fictional war story. I thought A Good Clean Fight book was very well written, lots of exciting action and the banter between the characters seems very real. I can't wait to read another of Robinson's books. Unlike PoC, which exclusively tracks the adventures of Hornet Squadron in the first year of WWII, this novel combines three narratives - the first involving an SAS patrol performing daring raids on Luftwaffe airfields in North Africa, the second involving a Luftwaffe intelligence officer determined to put a halt to these raids, and the third follows Hornet squadron as they embarks on ground attack missions - and these narratives intersect each other at various points during the novel. The novel is replete with the features one expects of a Robinson novel. There is some cracking good dialogue with the usual dark sense of humour and wit. Also, there are no heroes. All of the characters are flawed, often cruel and far from the dashing derring-doers of classic war narratives. This may give the impression that everyone in the war was a bit of a bastard, which I'm sure was not the case and some may feel that this is a disrespect to the men who fought, but I feel that it lends the story a feeling of verisimilitude which is often lacking from stories set in this period which have a tendency to glorify the people involved. It's been a long time since I first read Piece of Cake, and it was great to finally reacquaint myself with the lads from Hornet Squadron. After years of browsing second hand bookshops looking for it, I finally found a copy of A Good Clean Fight and it was a really great read which I highly recommend to all fans of WWII fiction. Some of the characters maybe sometimes a little too clever, resourceful, A Good Clean Fight, but nevertheless the whole things holds together and keeps you reading. The notes at the back of the book verfiy that some of the more bizarre exploits really did take place. Needless to say I'll be on the look out for the next in this series. A Good Clean Fight 01, David rated it it was amazing Shelves: own. I looked up the author and found this book. It takes place about a year later in the Desert war. Robinson has a clean crisp writing style. This is a quick easy read but it covers a lot of area. This is different in A Good Clean Fight he intertwines several stories; he does not just follow A Good Clean Fight Squadron. The book starts with an SAS raid on a German airfield. I found I enjoyed each thread but was always trying to hurry though and find out what twas happening with the other parts. Robinson has notes at the end to separate fact from fiction and what he based certain incidents on. • The Economic Cost of Strategic Bombing
BRITAIN 1939 – 1945: THE ECONOMIC COST OF STRATEGIC BOMBING By John Fahey UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY ABSTRACT BRITAIN 1939-1945: THE ECONOMIC COST OF STRATEGIC BOMBING By John Fahey Supervisor: Dr. Judith Keene Department of History The strategic air offensive against Germany during World War II formed a major part of Britain’s wartime military effort and it has subsequently attracted the attention of historians. Despite the attention, historians have paid little attention to the impact of the strategic air offensive on Britain. This thesis attempts to redress this situation by providing an examination of the economic impact on Britain of the offensive. The work puts the economic cost of the offensive into its historical context by describing the strategic air offensive and its intellectual underpinnings. Following this preliminary step, the economic costs are described and quantified across a range of activities using accrual accounting methods. The areas of activity examined include the expansion of the aircraft industry, the cost of individual aircraft types, the cost of constructing airfields, the manufacture and delivery of armaments, petrol and oil, and the recruitment, training and maintenance of the necessary manpower. The findings are that the strategic air offensive cost Britain £2.78 billion, equating to an average cost of £2,911.00 for every operational sortie flown by Bomber Command or £5,914.00 for every Germany civilian killed by aerial bombing. The conclusion reached is the damage inflicted upon Germany by the strategic air offensive imposed a very heavy financial burden on Britain that she could not afford and this burden was a major contributor to Britain’s post-war impoverishment.

The Greystone Legacy (copyright 2020 All Rights Reserved – Protected with www.ProtectMyWork.com Ref No. 8945260120S035) 1. September 7th 2015 The ordinarily tranquil West Sussex countryside was experiencing a vicious spell of thunder and lightning while the clouds belted across the sky as if being chased by an invisible assailant. In `the depths of a dark forest grove somewhere in Southern England a dilapidated wreck of an old wooden shack creaked and strained as it battled against the ferocious elements. As the biting wind, more typical of late November, whistled through the holes and cracks in the decayed, rotten beechwood, the door gently swung methodically on its hinges, like an old worn-out metronome. The young teenage runaway sheltered inside, his teeth chattering in the cold while his over-active mind played the cruellest hallucinatory tricks upon him. Inside the sparse, poorly equipped hut, a single candle plucked with haste from a drawer struggled to stay alight, resisting with courage the efforts of the roaring gale outside to extinguish it. Each waving, bending shadow of the surrounding fir-trees conjured up the most fearful monster caricatures in the lonely youth’s mind as they cascaded across the wall of this unlikely source of refuge. Before long, however, these frightening images were paling into insignificance as the eerie glow of a flaming cylindrical object lit up the sky above, plummeting towards the darkened outline of the distant hill from whence came the sound of a huge impact and deafening explosion. The boy screamed in unrestrained terror. The unremitting beatings administered by his Father over the last month and now this terrifying ordeal had finally stretched his nerves to the limit and he fell to the ground a writhing, quivering wreck.

Big difference. Serious contest judging, as has been discussed online ad nauseam , is generally ‘Find Faults First’. Judges certainly have to look at what was done well, but the winners are generally determined on whose model has the fewest basic modelling faults. If a fellow modeller asks you for a critique of their work, don’t assume that they are asking for a Nationals-level ‘reaming out’ of everything you think should have been done better. You shouldn’t be ignoring ‘areas for improvement’, but before you constructively discuss these, do what you can to say what you do like about someone else’s work. It’s not an internet ‘soccer league’ “all your models are winners” thing, but a little discretion and finding a friendly way to help someone improve their modelling will go a long way to encouraging people to stay in our chapters and in the hobby.
