SPELSBURYDOWN INTRODUCTION Spelsburydown lies in the Cotswolds north or Spclsbury village, some 12 km. NW. or WoodslOck and 6km. SE. or Chipping Norton. The field (Grid Rd. centred on SP351236) lies al betwC'en approximalely 171}-180m. above 0.0. on a south-facing slope of the Oolitic Limestone ridge betwecn the rivers Clyme to the nonh and Evenlode in the south (Fig. I). The ridge itself was probably an important rouleway in prehistoric limes, and a ridgeway track, known as the "Mereway', is traceable running N\<V. towards the Cots wold scarp in the vicinity of the Rollright Stones. Part of this routcway, in the form of the modern B4026, rorms Ihe NE. boundary or the field walked. The prehistory of the area is not well-known, though Ncolithic occupation is attested to by the remains of a probable chambered tomb near Enstone (the IHoar Stone' c. SP37772375) and a possible one at Lidstone (now demolished).

Scheduled Monuments in Oxfordshire Eclited by D. B. HARDEN HE Council for British Archaeology has recently issued the second eclition T of its J1emorandum on the Ancient Monuments Acts of 1913, 1931 and 1953.' This pamphlet explains in brief terms the provisions of the Acts and the machinery instituted by the Ministry of Works for operating them. It con tains also a list of local correspondents of the Mjnistry of Works, county by county, through whom reports and information about ancient monuments in the counties may be forwarded to the Ancient Monuments Department of the Ministry for action by the Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments and his staff'. The information contained in the pamphlet is so important and so lucidly set out that the Committee has reacliJy acceded to a request from the Council for British Archaeology that its substance should be reprinted here. It is hoped that aJl members of the Society will make themselves familiar with the facts it provides, and be ready to keep the necessary watch on ancient monu ments in their area whether scheduled or not scheduled. Any actual or impend ing destruction or damage should be reported without delay either to the Cbief Inspector of Ancient Monuments or to the Ministry's Local Correspondent in the county in which the monument lies. (A list of the correspondents for Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties is given in Appendix I.) Special watch should, of course, be kept on monuments already scheduled, which are, for the very reason that they are scheduled, to be presumed to be amongst the most important ancient remains in the clistrict.

Knott declared an interest in item No. 12 (Planning Applications: Serenity Park, Lidstone) and Item No. 11 – Lidstone corner. GIGACLEAR IN ENSTONE – PRESENTATION:- Cllr. Knott welcomed Mr. Dominic Hones and Mr. Rory Humphrey from Gigaclear who gave a five minute presentation regarding the installation of fibre broadband in Enstone in the coming months. The project will cover 390 properties with 184 connection points, covering seven thousand metres. The aim is to commence work in Quarter 3 2021. The main cabinet will go live in Quarter 4 with completion of works in Quarter 2 2022. A letter will be sent to all residents. Works are guaranteed for two years and verges will be reinstated within six months of completion.

Hand sanitiser will be available for entry and exit but people should bring their own face- mask, please! Sorry for the rather prescriptive information but the diocese have laid down clear guidelines. We are waiting for the green light on public Masses and they may well start in a low-key manner, without any singing, a bit like a Low Mass. Currently there is still a freeze on Confessions but as soon as this is permitted Father Tony will be available.
