Photo: Supplied Eighteen staff - including five on-air presenters - at Brisbane station 4BC have been axed, the merged Fairfax/Macquarie radio network has confirmed. Ian Skippen, Loretta Ryan, Patrick Condren, Walter Williams and Murray Shoring will no longer be heard on the talkback station, with other redundancies coming from other areas including sales, IT and production. Chief Operating Officer Adam Lang arrived in Brisbane on Thursday afternoon to begin talking with individual staff members about their future. He issued a statement on Friday afternoon confirming the 18 job losses. "4BC on-air presenters, including Breakfast team Ian Skippen and Loretta Ryan, Mornings presenter Patrick Condren, Evening presenter Walter Williams and Weekend Breakfast announcer Murray Shoring will finish their roles with the station today," Mr Lang said. "Magic 882 Evening presenter Jo Henderson has also left the station. "I would like to acknowledge the incredible contribution and dedication these presenters have made to our stations and our Brisbane audience." Mr Lang's statement hinted local breakfast, morning and evening programs would be replaced with networked content from Sydney station 2GB, such as Alan Jones and Ray Hadley. "We will be announcing our new station line-ups shortly and look forward to bringing the very best of our newly expanded Macquarie Radio Network programs to our Brisbane audience," the statement read. Ian Skippen left 4BC late Friday morning wearing a Groucho Marx disguise in an effort to make light of the situation. Skippen was previously sacked from Triple M in 2011. Former Channel 7 political journalist Patrick Condren was a high-profile recruit to 4BC when he began in the mornings slot at the start of 2014. He signed off on Friday, telling listeners "I've enjoyed myself. It's time to go." Later outside the station Condren told waiting TV reporters he joked that other opportunities were on the way. "I can hear that other door opening and I think it's the Story Bridge Hotel, so you'll excuse me," he said. Sports Today presenter Kieran Marsh has also lost his role. Production, IT and sales staff are also believed to have been made redundant. 4BC was one of the first radio stations in Brisbane, founded by electrical store baron John Beals Chandler in 1930. Opening his Friday drive show, announcer Ben Davis pointed out it was the same year Richie Benaud was born. Davis read Mr Lang's statement on air, then gave his own thoughts on the turmoil. "A group of extremely talented, gifted, hard-working – and you wouldn't believe how hard- working – people, my mates, no longer have a job," he said. "Right now it's not about numbers, it's about people. People who have feelings, people who have talent. People who've worked their guts out for you, the people of Brisbane. "As for what now, that will be determined over the coming days. I don't know, I can't assume, it would only make me look foolish if I knew and speculated about what might be happening in the future. "But what I do know is that we will continue to make great radio, continue to be the voice of Brisbane, continue to entertain, to inform and to make you smile – because that's what Brisbane is all about." As we continue the business integration between Fairfax Radio Network and Macquarie Radio Network, there are staff changes under way at 4BC and Magic 882 in Brisbane. These conversations with our team will conclude by the end of next week. A total of 18 roles will be leaving our business with the aim of redeploying some staff within the network. "4BC on-air presenters, including Breakfast team Ian Skippen and Loretta Ryan, Mornings presenter Patrick Condren, Evening presenter Walter Williams and Weekend Breakfast announcer Murray Shoring will finish their roles with the station today. Magic 882 Evening presenter Jo Henderson has also left the station. Introduction Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) welcomes the opportunity to participate in the Senate Inquiry relating to the capacity of communication networks and emergency warning systems to deal with emergencies and natural disasters. CRA is the peak national industry body for Australian commercial radio stations. CRA has 260 members and represents approximately 99% of the commercial radio broadcasting industry in Australia. The commercial radio industry is keen to offer as much assistance as possible in times of emergency and recognizes its responsibilities as one of the nation‟s major information sources during crises. Broadcast media is the most effective means by which emergency service organisations communicate with the public when critical events occur. Commercial radio plays a particularly important role, as 80% of Australians listen to commercial radio. The local commercial radio stations therefore play a critical role in the dissemination of information to the local community in times of emergency. We set out below a brief outline of the regulation and agreements which detail the way in which commercial radio assists in emergencies, together with examples from recent emergencies of the way in which this operates in practice. Doctor of Philosophy Ashley Paul Jones Graduate Diploma of Media Production Master of Arts in Media Production 2016 i ABSTRACT Radio is part of our everyday life experience in various rooms around the home, in the car and as a portable device. Its impact and connection with the local community was immediate since its inception in Australia in 1923. Radio became directly part of the City of Ipswich in 1935 with the birth of 4IP (Ipswich). Local people were avid consumers of broadcast media and recognised that, in particular, 4IP was something that they could both participate in and consume. It gave people a voice; historically 4IP broadcast local choirs, soloists, produced youth programs and generally reflected the community in which it existed. The radio station moved out of Ipswich and established itself in Brisbane during 1970s. This move resulted in a loss of a voice in the local area through broadcast radio. Similarly, the place, Ipswich City changed dramatically and is confronted with significant population growth and the emergence of an old and new Ipswich that is potentially problematic for the local council to manage. The aim is to provide a sense of localism that was strongly present in the early decades of Ipswich as evidenced by the interactions with 4IP; the identity of the two is remarkable because of their parallel flux. My thesis will provide a unique insight into the relationship between a community, that community’s membership and local radio services.

Recognising the offence caused by his remarks, Alan on Friday publicly apologised for them. In his apology, Alan recognised that his comments were “careless, unnecessary and wrong”, and “should have been more clearly thought out”. He indicated that he had apologised sincerely to Prime Minister Ardern for any offence given, and had certainly not intended to suggest any harm through his comments. Notwithstanding his apologies, I have today discussed the matter with Alan and advised him that any recurrence of commentary of this nature will result in the termination of his contract.     Queensland A.M. Radio Stations. Part of the most comprehensive list ever compiled of Australian A.M. broadcasting stations. 4CM Brisbane 02-1920. Experimental station owned by Dr Val McDowall on longwave using 20 watts. Built by Thomas Elliott (Australia’s television pioneer and first Chief Engineer of 4BC). Operated by Charles Stevens from experimental station 4RG (later an original staff member of 4QG). Broadcast regular Sunday night concerts 1921-1922, and live broadcasts from His Majesty’s Theatre. Moved into the Old Windmill Tower in 1926, and conducted the first Australian television experiments from 1929 with a 30 line Baird system. Moved to medium wave (1250 KHz.) using 10 watts in August 1933. Granted Australia’s first television licence on 1-7-1934 (also the first television licence in the Southern Hemisphere). Television transmissions (earlier called ‘radiovision’) were daily from 1935 for one hour at 7- 30 PM with an increase to 180 lines on 136 metres, and often received in Melbourne. The first faces on Australian television were Mickey Mouse playing the piano in an M.G.M. cartoon on 10-4-1934, followed by film star Janet Gaynor in 1935 (see separate “Australia’s First Licensed Television Station” article). His television equipment used to be displayed at the Brisbane Royal Historical Society. Val McDowell also experimented with X-rays and was a radiology consultant for the Queensland Government. 4AE Brisbane 1920. Experimental station owned by the Wireless Institute of Australia using a 10 watt transmitter at Dutton Park. Their callsign was later changed to 4WI. On air 2000-2200 every Tuesday.
