  • Favorite Sitcoms
Sometimes There’s Magic By Marilynn Reeves Every so often a new sitcom comes along that rises head and shoulders above the rest. I’m thinking of shows like Carol Burnette, Seinfeld, I Love Lucy, and All In The Family. And back in the mid-1960s, the creative genius of Carl Reiner gave us The Dick VanDyke Show. With a staff of brilliant writers and a cast that included Dick VanDyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, as well as Reiner himself playing the roll of the producer of the Alan Brady Show – suddenly, there was magic in the air! Rob, the bumbling television writer (VanDyke) was always tripping over himself and getting into hot water with his boss Alan Brady. The same was true on the home front. I can still hear Mary Tyler Moore’s Laura, crying out in her sweet but strident voice, “Oh, R-o-o-o-b!” Later, she starred in her own sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show – another of my all-time favorites. The only thing lacking in her show was … Dick VanDyke! Another sitcom I loved that came out of the 60’s was The Andy Griffith Show. Andy, the sheriff of Mayberry RFD, always played the straight-man to his hilariously incompetent deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts). The show had a wholesome, home-town feel, with Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), always fluttering about, fussing over Andy and his son Opie, portrayed by Ron Howard. (Later, after starring in Happy Days, Howard went behind the camera and directed such notable films as Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code.) But what a cute, red-headed kid little Ronnie Howard was! Somehow, his character Opie was always getting into mischief, but that only presented an opportunity for Andy to give him a wise and drawn-out lecture about how he could do better next time.

  • The Kahala Hotel & Resort Milestones
The Kahala Hotel & Resort Milestones § 1866 – Mark Twain was probably the first literary person of note to touch Kahala, plodding around Diamond Head on a reluctant horse in 1866. § About 1888 - Captain John Ross leased acreage from Kamehameha’s heirs for a ranch on the site of what is now the golf club, but had abandoned the venture by 1888. § Early 1900s - Paul Isenberg of the Kauai Island Sugar-planting family leased 3,000 acres at an annual rent of $12,000 for about 40 years that included the lands now occupied by The Kahala, the golf course, and the thousands of handsome homes in the Kahala area. § 1947 – City Planner David Wolbrink of Harlan Bartholomew Associates devised a plan for the best use of Bishop Estate lands in Waialae-Kahala area, including the golf club whose lease was about to expire. He suggested they keep the golf and suggested a world-class hotel on a 12.5 acre beach site to enhance and maintain the exclusive character and ambience of the neighborhood. A full-page advertisement announced the availability of the site, but there was no response. § 1959 - Real estate investor Charlie Pietsch obtains a lease on the site from Bishop Estate. The lease included the golf course with an extension of 15 acres on the opposite end. The golf lease had 10 years to maturity, but Pietsch negotiated with them to extend to 65 years, if a hotel were to be built. With lease in hand, Pietsch flew to Los Angeles and put together a 50/50 deal with friend Conrad Hilton.

  • Official Digital Program 2019 Open-Wheels.Com 500 Mile Race
OFFICIAL DIGITAL PROGRAM 2019 OPEN-WHEELS.COM 500 MILE RACE Welcome To the Open-Wheels.com 500 Mile Race On behalf of the staff at Open-Wheels.com, welcome to the inaugural running of the Open-Wheels.com 500 Mile Race presented by Mitchell Transmissions. After many months of planning, preparation, discussions, and excitement, we begin our first chapter in what is hopefully a storied history for our November event. My dreams, hopes, and visions for this race first began to circulate in late May, wondering what it would take to replicate (to the best of our ability) what it feels like for a driver to be part of the Indianapolis 500 in real life. To feel the pressure of qualifications, and what it means to simply make the race - not to mention the elation that one lucky competitor will enjoy upon winning the event itself. Indianapolis is about so much more than its four corners, or what happens for 200 laps within its pristine white walls. For some, it is a rousing pre-race ceremony that includes Taps, Back Home Again in Indiana, and always a memorable flyover. For others, it is the green flag that seems to take ages to finally get here - before it finally happens in the blink of an eye, and 33 daring drivers funnel into Turn 1 at over 200 miles per hour.
