Athyrium Niponicum 'Pictum'
A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 30 Jan 2004 Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ The Perennial Plant Association has named Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year. This perennial low-maintenance Japanese painted fern is one of the showiest ferns for shade gardens. It is popular due to its hardiness nearly everywhere in the United States, except in the desert and northernmost areas in zone 3. ‘Pictum’ grows 18 inches tall and as it multiplies can make a clump that is more than two feet wide. ‘Pictum’ produces 12- to 18-inch fronds that are a soft shade of metallic silver-gray with hints of red and blue. This lovely fern, which prefers partial to full shade, makes an outstanding combination plant for adding color, texture, and habit to landscape beds and containers. Landscape Uses The magnifi cent texture and color of the fronds electrify shady areas of the garden and make the fern a wonderful companion for a variety of shade plants. Japanese painted fern provides a nice contrast to other shade-loving perennials such as hosta, bleeding heart, columbine, Fronds of Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ astilbe and coral bells. A popular combination is Japanese painted fern with Hosta ‘Patriot’ and ‘Ginko Craig’. For something different, try Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’. Another friendly companion plant for the Japanese painted fern is Tiarella (foam fl ower). One of the most unique possibilities is to use this fern with sedges. Carex (sedges) are shade-loving, easy-to-grow grasslike plants. Try Carex morrowii ‘Variegata’ or Carex siderosticha ‘Silver Sceptre’. -

(2008). This is nearly one third of the total c. 1100 species of indigenous Pteridophytes present in India. Endemics in the list are noted and carefully revised distributions are given for each species along with their estimated IUCN category. A slightly modified update of the classification by Fraser-Jenkins (2010a) is used. University Ave. Little Rock, AR 72204 [email protected] ABSTRACT Since 1995, 11 fern taxa have been added to the Arkansas flora as new and native, including Asplenium montanum , A. ruta-muraria , A. septentrianale , A. ×trudellii , Athyrium angustum , Azolla caroliniana , Dryopteris goldiana , D. celsa × goldiana , Marsilea macropoda , Palhinhaea cernua , and Trichomanes intracatum . Of the reported Arkansas native ferns, one was deleted (Azolla caroliniana ), being subsumed by Azolla mexicana and now correctly known as Azolla microphylla . Since 1995, 20 fern taxa have been added to the Arkansas fern flora as new and naturalized, including Arachnioides simplicior , Athyrium nipponicum ‘Pictum’, Cyrtomium falcatum , C. fortunei , Dryopteris erythrospora , Hypolepis tenuifolia , Marsilea mutica , M. quadrifolia , Matteuccia struthiopteris , Nephrolepis exaltata , Polystichum tsus-sinense , Phegopteris decursive-pinnata , Salvinia minima , S. molesta , Selaginella braunii , S. kraussiana , S. k. ‘Aurea’, S. k. ‘Brownii’, S. k. ‘Goldtips’, and S. uncinata . Of the reported Arkansas naturalized ferns, one was deleted (C. fortunei ), being without a known voucher. There are now 97 native and 24 naturalized fern taxa known and documented in the Arkansas fern flora. The total Arkansas fern flora is now 121 taxa documented with 3019 county-level occurrence records. Noteworthy update records and comments are reported for 79 of 97 Arkansas native species and 25 Arkansas naturalized species. In this study, we examined how reduced 13 watering altered growth of Athyrium niponicum ‘Red Beauty’, Cyrtomium fortunei ‘Clivicola’, Dryop- 14 teris atrata, Dryopteris erythrosora, Dryoperis filix-mas, Dryoperis filix-mas ‘Linearis Polydactylon’, and 15 Polystichum setiferum ‘Proliferum’ in comparison with optimal watering conditions. From among 16 the seven fern taxa, Athyrium niponicum ‘Red Beauty’ and Dryoperis filix-mas turned out the most 17 sensitive to reduced watering and they demonstrated leaf browning and drying. The general public in the surrounding region has a strong interest in hardy fern gardening. The Morris Arboretum has a substantial collection of hardy ferns. For my internship project I developed a class on hardy fern gardening to be taught here at the arboretum. The class covers the history of hardy fern gardening and general cultural requirements. There are descriptions of a variety of hardy ferns that can be easily grown in this area. The ferns are presented into three categories based on their habit: ascending, spreading, or small stature. I taught the class twice to volunteers here at the Morris Arboretum, in order to get feedback and improve the class. There will also be a tour of the fern collection at the arboretum following the lecture. This tour will include many of the ferns that were discussed during the lecture. -
