6) Supplemental Recruitment Initiatives

(a) Initiative: Establishment of an Internship Program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment.

Date: Ongoing Participants: All stations WBOS, WBQT, WKLB, WBZ and WROR have an ongoing internship program in the programming, promotions, sales and production departments designed to assist members of the community in acquiring skills needed for broadcast employment. The internship program is promoted on station websites, and through postings with outside sources and at job fairs sponsored by local colleges. These are semester-long, for-credit programs that allow students to experience radio station operation first hand. Interns are offered a hands-on learning experience in Marketing/Promotions, Commercial Production, and Programming. In addition, time is provided for department head managers to answer questions in a formal setting in order to explain and provide context for students on the various procedures, techniques and events they experience during the internship. During this reporting period, the Employment Unit hosted 3 interns from various colleges throughout the region.

NABEF Career Day Date: April 9, 2019 NABEF, Las Vegas Beasley Vice President of Digital Operations and the Director of Interactive Marketing attended. Resumes were accepted and applications were distributed.

(c) Initiative: Participation in events or programs sponsored by educational institutions or organizations related to career opportunities in broadcasting.

I. Date: June 17-26, 2019 Beasley Media Group hosted the Radio Talent Institute for students, interns, and young professionals from June 17 – June 26, 2019 at Emerson College in Boston. The Beasley Radio Talent Institute was an intense 10-day program where participants had the opportunity to meet with, and learn from, over 30 radio professionals currently working in the broadcast industry including many managers and on-air talent professionals from this employment unit. The program was open to all college students, graduate students, and recent graduates. The Beasley Radio Talent Institute provided an incredible opportunity for students to gain valuable experience, build relationships with broadcasters throughout the region, attain additional internships, and get their first post-graduate job placement to begin their careers in the industry. The Beasley Radio Talent Institute helped to build on the educational foundation that students were already receiving by bridging the campus-to-career gap that exists for most college students. All of the stations in the Beasley Boston Employment Unit participated in this exciting initiative.

II. Date: October 21, 2019 The Program Director for 92.9 FM WBOS spoke to a class at Massasoit Community College about how he got into radio, his career path and how to pursue a career in the broadcasting industry. He also spoke about the state of local and national radio. He also serves on the board of Westboro TV, a non-profit volunteer broadcast facility in his local town.

III. Date: October 25, 2019 An On-Air Talent for 92.9 WBOS guest lectured at Curry College in the Introduction to Communications Course. He discussed the outline of his work history and how it contrasted against the changes in technology within the broadcasting industry. He also lectured on trends over the last 22 years in radio.

(d) Initiative: Posting of Job Openings in Job Banks/Newsletters

I. Date: Ongoing The Employment Unit posts job openings and internships at the online job banks of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association (www.massbroadcasters.org), New Hampshire Broadcasters Association (www.nhab.org) and National Association of Broadcasters (www.nab.org), and on All Access (www.allaccess.com), and regularly sends non-confidential upper-level postings (Management, Sales, Promotions) to organizations with membership including substantial participation by woman and minorities such as NAACP (Boston Chapter) (www.bostonnaacp.org), and The Boston Career Link (www.bostoncareerlink.org).

(e) Initiative: Station Tours

I. Date(s): 08/01/2019, 09/27/2019 Beasley Media Group hosted station tours for Triangle Training Center in Malden. Triangle Training Center empowers people with disabilities and their families to enjoy rich, fulfilling lives. Two separate groups came (8/1 & 9/27) to the stations for a tour of the building and a rundown on all the stations, and met with production to see/hear how radio commercials are produced and visited in the WBQT studio. Tours gave an overview of careers in broadcasting.

II. Date: 10/08/2019 WBZ-FM hosted a station tour for the media class of Reading Elementary School. They came in for a tour of the building, met with the Digital Team and saw how they edit videos, met with production to see and hear how radio stations work behind the scenes with commercials, contests and phone lines. Tours gave an overview of careers in broadcasting.

(f) Initiative: Participation in Scholarship Programs

I. Date: April 2019 The Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Student Broadcaster Scholarship Program encourages students who are interested in radio and/or television industry to further their education in the field. The Market Manger participated in the selection committee and reviewed/rated scholarship applications. Public Service Announcements were also run on our stations for the Mass Broadcasters Al Sprague Scholarship fund.
