New Trier High School Jazz Ensemble I The NEW TRIER HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ ENSEMBLE I is the most advanced of four curricular jazz ensembles at New Trier High School in Winnetka. The group rehearses during the school day and the students receive a grade for their participation. New Trier also offers four curricular concert bands and four orchestras. More than 120 students participate in the jazz studies program at New Trier. The ensemble is directed by James Warrick, who came to New Trier in 1981. Some of the jazz artists who have performed with the New Trier Jazz En- semble include... Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, the rhythm section of the Count Basie Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lew Tabacken, Ed Shaugnessy, Clark Terry, Louie Bellson, Jamie Aebersold, Bobby Shew, and more than 50 others. Believing that their graduates are their trophies, the New Trier Jazz En- sembles do not participate in competitive jazz events. However, Jazz En- semble I has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, two times at the international conventions of the International Asso- ciation of Jazz Educators, three times at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the National Band Association convention, and several European tours. They have performed twice at the JAZZ SHOWCASE in Chicago. During the summer of 2000 the ensemble toured Japan and China for two weeks, performing the first jazz concerts ever performed in the three major cities in the Henan Province. In April of 2001, Jazz Ensemble I per- formed for a national medical conference in Washington, D.C.. Jazz Ensemble I will perform the music they are playing for you tonight at the 2002 Mid West International Band and Orchestra Clinic. This will be their fourth performance at this conference of more than 1,200 instrumental music educators from all over the world. Only two high schools are selected each year to perform. New Trier has receive numerous awards from Downbeat magazine in its annual Student Musician Awards program. They have received the “Most Outstanding High School Jazz Ensemble” six times in the past ten years. The en- semble has recorded 22 compact discs that are available on their website... ntjazz.com.
