The highlight of the month was their annual picnic to the Tollygunge club. They were delighted to travel together in the school bus, play in the grounds, meet the friendly horses and eat their favourite snacks amidst the lush greens of the club. Exegesis of the Ayodhya Verdict
EXEGESIS OF THE AYODHYA VERDICT OVERVIEW: The report throws light on the Supreme Court verdict released on November 9th 2019 with regards to the Ayodhya case and the intricate history revolving the case. The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute or more commonly known as the Ayodhya case has been the most controversial court case of Independent India. It has been an emotive issue and has been mired in a slew of legal suites for over 70 years. The entire dispute is about 2.77 acres of land, which is approximately the size of two football fields. And yet, this land dispute has continued from the Mughal-era to a British rule to 2019, until, the legal conclusion on the case was announced by the Supreme Court on 9th November 2019, marking an end to decades of uncertainty on the issue. What value do this 2.77 acres hold for the people of India that turned this case into one of the most sensitive and controversial cases in India? What could be the influence of the verdict on this case and to what extent could it affect the common man? To be able to answer such questions, we need to understand the labyrinthine events that triggered this dispute. HISTORY: A. TEMPLE DEMOLISHMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF MOSQUE • The Hindu epic Ramayana states that the Hindu deity Lord Ram was born almost 900,000 years ago during the Treta Yuga in Ayodhya on the banks of the river Sarayu. This is identified with present-day Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. According to the beliefs of the Hindus, the ancient temple which stood in place of the demolished Babri mosque marked the exact birthplace of Lord Ram. -

During the late '80s and the '90s, a flurry of sadhu activism coincided with the dramatic rise of a previously insignificant political party, the Bhartiya JanataParty (BJP). As a conservative Hindu nationalist party, the BJP allied with many sadhus, came to power at the center and in many states, breaking the monopoly that the relatively secular Congress party had held for more than four decades. -

6 What Happened in Gujarat
WHAT HAPPENED IN GUJARAT? THE FACTS The following narrative draws from various sources: newspaper reports, fact-finding missions and other reports which came out after the Gujarat carnage. It pieces together the sequence of events that occurred in and around Godhra before, on and after 27th February 2002 (the incident that allegedly sparked off the ensuing communal violence in the State of Gujarat), and details of the extent and nature of the terrible violence against Muslims in Gujarat in the months that followed. I. Setting The Context: Before 27 February 2002 History of Communal Tension in Godhra The town of Godhra in Gujarat has a long history of inter-community tensions stemming from the fact that in 1947, when India achieved independence and was partitioned to create Pakistan, thousands of Hindus fleeing Pakistan settled in Godhra, and vented their anger at Godhra’s Muslims, burning their homes and businesses with truckloads of gasoline. Since then, government officials have deemed the town one of the country’s most “communally sensitive” places in India. In the 1980’s and again in 1992, it was wracked by riots initiated by members of both communities. Today Godhra, a town of 15,000, is evenly split between Hindus and Muslims, most of whom live in segregated communities separated in places by train tracks. There is little interaction between them and both regard one another with suspicion. The Temple at Ayodhya: A Cause for Tension During the Kumbh Mela (an annual Hindu religious fair) in January 2001, the VHP (Vishva Hindu Parishad – World Hindu Council) ‘Dharma Sansad’ (Religious Council) decided that the construction of a Ram Temple on the site of the Babri Masjid (ancient mosque built on the site of a demolished temple, finally demolished by Hindu activists of the VHP and other right wing forces on 6 December 1992) would start on March 12 of 2002. -

GLOBALIZING PAKISTANI IDENTITY ACROSS THE BORDER: THE POLITICS OF CROSSOVER STARDOM IN THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION In 2010, Pakistani musician and actor Ali Zafar noted how “films and music are one of the greatest tools of bringing in peace and harmony between India and Pakistan. As both countries share a common passion – films and music can bridge the difference between the two.”1 In a more recent interview from May 2016, Zafar reflects on the unprecedented success of his career in India, celebrating his work in cinema as groundbreaking and forecasting a bright future for Indo-Pak collaborations in entertainment and culture.2 His optimism is signaled by a wish to reach an even larger global fan base, as he mentions his dream of working in Hollywood and joining other Indian émigré stars like Priyanka Chopra.
