From the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey Manifestations of Nationalisms and National Imaginations Mukaddime, 2015, 6(2), 237-262 doi: 10.19059/mukaddime.23472 From the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey Manifestations of Nationalisms and National Imaginations Mehmet Hişyar KORKUSUZi, Ersoy KUTLUKii Abstract: Political views such as Ottomanism, Islamism and Turanism (Turkism) were experienced by Ottoman Empire in last and longest century in order to protect his integration better. Newborn Republic took over ideological legacy of the Ottoman Empire largely and transformed it with a new style. Nationalist ideology, that continues its evolution in anti- communist conjuncture during the Cold War, has again changed its imagination with emerging the problem of ethnic nationalism after the 1980s. The traces of nationalism, which has a particular goal but does not have a way that is exactly certain, are tried to be followed from the Ottoman to Turkey. We carefully elected some important actors and their perceptions in order to understand and compare better the reality of national cases. Keywords: The Ottoman Empire, Republic of Turkey, Ottomanism, Islamism, culture, Turanism, Turkish Nationalism, reactional ethnic nationalism. The subject of nationalism is within the scope of this view as well. It requires a wide range of evaluation. The idea of nationalism, which is predominant in the UK as a Liberal-conservative character and in France as rational-constructionist features, emerged in Germany as a romantic nationalism. Nation-state nationalism, which evokes integration and mobilization, opened the horizon of thought in terms of sharing common icons, symbols and fate via educational institutions and the army. Nationalism, 238 between communities having nation but not state and communities establishing state but trying to build nation, shows itself in different ways. When we look at the discussion of nationalism that comes out from the late Ottoman period to the foundation of Republic and from the establishment of the Republic to present, it is possible to observe that; the ‘Romantic 2015, 6(2) Nationalism’ approach takes place together with ‘Rational’ (Constructivist) approach in our country. However, the current situation, that has historical, social and cultural data, pursued a course to its own characteristics. УПРАВЛЕНИЕ И ОБРАЗОВАНИЕ MANAGEMENT AND EDUCATION TOM V (3) 2009 VOL. V (3) 2009 1944 PAN-TURANISM MOVEMENTS: FROM CULTURAL NATIONALISM TO POLITICAL NATIONALISM A. Baran Dural ABSTRACT: The trial of Turanism in 1944 has a historical importance in terms of nationalism being an ac- tionary movement in Turkish history. When socialism turned out to be a dreadful ideology by getting reactions all over the world, there would not be any more natural attitude than that intellectuals coming from an educa- tion system full of nationalist proposals conflicted with this movement. However, that the same intellectuals crashed the logic of the government saying “if needed, we bring communism, then we deal with it without the help of anyone” was really a dramatic paradox. Movements of Turkism on 3rd of May did not curb the movement of Turkism, on the contrary, the transformation the government avoided most happened and supporters of Turk- ism spread to all parts of the country by politicizing. While Nihal Atsız, one of the nationalist leaders of the time- was summarizing results taken out from the trial process by his ideology, he could not even be regarded unjust in his remarks saying “The 3rd of May became a turning point in the history of Turkism. Turkism, which was only a thought and emotion and which could not go beyond literary and scientific borders, became a movement sud- denly on the 3rd of May, 1944”. Keywords: Turanism Movements, Turk nationalism, one-party ideology, Nihal Atsız, socialism, racism.

  • Turanism, an Aspect of Turkish Nationalism 23 Did, Turkic Ethnicism in Contrast to the Theocratic Interracialism of the Community of the Faithful Jümmetj
T U R A N I S M AN ASPECT OF TURKISH NATIONALISM In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, as is generally known, the Ottoman Empire drifted away from the British orbit and came increasingly under the influence of Germany. It was the time when the British Foreign Office, after half a century of adhering to the principle of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire as a barrier to Russian expansionism, began to tolerate, or even support, the nationalist movement of the Balkan peoples and their claims against Turkey. At the beginning of Gladstone’s administration, in 1880, Montenegro, thanks to British as well as to Rus sian favor, acquired an outlet at Dulcigno (Ulcinj);1 a year later Abd-ul- Hamid II was compelled to cede Thessaly to Greece;2 on several occasions thereafter London registered an interest in behalf of the Cretans and the Armenians and reminded the sultan of his obligation to introduce reforms according to Articles 23 and 61 of the Berlin Treaty.3 No less important in Turkish eyes were Great Britain’s attempts to carve off Ottoman territories or to establish a foothold in the periphery of the declining empire. The retention of Cyprus by the British and the occupation of Egypt, the former in tune with Greek aspirations,4 5the latter in overt opposition to Egyptian nationalism,6 were equally severe blows to 1. • Mytho-Historical Narratives and Identity-Discourse in Hungarian
Social Constructions of the Native Faith: Mytho-historical Narratives and Identity-discourse in Hungarian Neo- paganism by Ádám Kolozsi Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Advisor: Professor András Kovács CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract This thesis provides a detailed examination of the historical roots and national ideologies of contemporary Hungarian native faith movements, focusing specifically on the narrative boundary-setting mechanisms. In my historical research, based on the analysis of primary resources, I am looking for the roots of neo-pagan concepts in Hungary. In the narrative analysis of contemporary neo-pagan discourses, I examine the ethnic myths, historical memories, national ideologies and symbolic boundary-setting mechanisms. The thesis shows that native-faith myths (re)define actual group boundaries and reinforce current group identifications. In this way, neo-pagan nationalism contributes to the reformulation of national ideologies, national sentiments and „groupist‟ ideas. I argue that the public success of native faith ideas is explicable by their fitting to broader group beliefs of contemporary ethno-nationalism. • Eurasia Calling: Political Context of Scientific Turanism in the Writings of Max Müller and Yrjö Koskinen, and Its Development Into the 20Th Century Pan-Turanism
Mikael-Arman Ahrari, 6073875, [email protected], Thesis BA History (GE3V18002), ~8000 words Eurasia Calling: Political context of scientific Turanism in the writings of Max Müller and Yrjö Koskinen, and its development into the 20th century Pan-Turanism "Map of Iran and Turan" (1843) by Adolf Stieler Abstract Turanism was a 19th century ethnolinguistic theory and a pan-nationalist idea which argued that there was an ancient relation between Finnish, Hungarian and North-Asian languages and peoples. The theory assumed a linguistic relatedness between nations included in it, as well as a shared ancient land from which these nations spread out. Its earliest formulation can be found in the writings of the Finnish linguist Matthias Castrén, but it was later popularized by the German philologist Max Müller. Often mistakenly understood as merely pan-Turkism or pan-Magyarism, it had greater international reach than often perceived. In this paper I ask to what extent was Müller’s theory of Turanism politically conceived and how was the theory interpreted by its later followers, such as Yrjö-Koskinen? To what degree were these subsequent interpretations politically tinted? While I agree with much of the existing literature that describe the nature of 20th century pan-Turanism, here I argue that the scholarly work in the 19th century was also politically motivated and had political utility in its process of establishing a new philological field. I explore and trace the concept in the 19th century intellectual works, mostly by comparing and contextualizing Müller’s Languages of the Seat of War and Finnish historian Yrjö-Koskinen’s historical work on the roots of the Finnish nation.

First, we provide summary statistics, additional sensitivity checks and further evidence. Second, we provide details and sources on the data covering regional output and unemployment, trust, beliefs, attitudes and voting statistics. Third, we provide the classification of non-mainstream political parties’ political orientation (far-right, radical-left, populist, Eurosceptic and separatist) for all countries. 1 1. Summary Statistics, Additional Sensitivity Checks, and Further Evidence 1.1 Summary Statistics Appendix Table 1 reports the summary statistics at the individual level for all variables that we use from the ESS distinguishing between the pre-crisis period (2000-08) and the post-crisis period (2009-14). Panel A looks at all questions on general trust, trust in national and supranational institutions, party identification, ideological position on the left-right scale and beliefs on the European unification issue whereas in panel B we focus on attitudes to immigration. 1.2 Additional Sensitivity Checks Appendix Table 2 looks at the relationship between employment rates and voting for anti- establishment parties. Panel A reports panel OLS estimates with region fixed effects. Panel B reports difference-in-differences estimates. In contrast to Table 4, the specifications now include a dummy that takes on the value of one for core countries (Austria, France, Norway, Sweden) and zero for the periphery countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Ireland, Slovakia).

  • Ethnic Fears and Ethnic War in Karabagh
Ethnic Fears and Ethnic War In Karabagh Stuart J. Kaufman University of Kentucky October 1998 The ethnic conflict between Armenians and Azerbaijanis over the region of Nagorno-Karabagh first exploded into violence—or at least, into the newspapers—with the Sumgait pogroms of 1988, during which hundreds of Christian Armenians were killed or injured at the hands of mobs of Muslim Azerbaijanis. The conflict placed the “nationality question” back near the top of the Soviet Union’s political agenda, and it can be seen in retrospect as the death knell of the Soviet Union itself, representing the first indication of the capacity of nationalist conflicts inside the USSR to undermine Soviet rule. It also developed into the bloodiest and most destructive of the ethnic wars in the Gorbachev years, producing by one estimate some 10,000 dead after 5 years of conflict, and over 1 million refugees on the Azerbaijani side alone. 1 The Karabagh conflict therefore bears studying as an important episode in its own right. It also bears studying as a case study in the theory of ethnic or nationalist conflict. Mark Saroyan, one of the most talented students of the Transcaucasus and its turmoil, posed the question of interpretation this way: “The Armenian Protests: Is it Passion or Politics?” Though Saroyan’s polemic was aimed primarily at journalists, it was reprinted for a scholarly audience because most scholars agreed with the question, the majority also agreeing with Saroyan’s answer that the conflict—and many others like it—was driven not by “deep-seated and seemingly immutable hostility,” but rather by a rational drive to achieve ordinary political goals: “a rational response to contemporary institutional constraints.”2 1 Suzanne Goldenberg, Pride of Small Nations: The Caucasus and Post-Soviet Disorder (London: Zed Books, 1994), p.
