Thanks, and know that your labor of love will not go unrewarded Amos Obiefuna iv DEDICATION Dedicated to my late father, Mr. Godwin Obiefuna, who fought tenaciously and gallantly to see that all his children had the best of education in spite of the overwhelming odds. v PREDICTORS OF PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS FOR NIGERIAN AMERICAN GRADUATES LIVING IN FOUR TEXAS CITIES Amos Obiefuna, PhD University of the Incarnate Word, 2019 The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the linear relationship between pairs of spirituality, coping skills, frequency of social media use, parental influence, and English proficiency among Nigerian Americans living in four Texas cities-San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Besides, it examined the effects of these variables on the achievement levels of Nigerian American graduates in these four cities. The variables were systematically selected and were some of the most cited in the literature. Participants (N= 421) were recruited using emails, and other social media platforms (WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook) and each participant was requested to complete the Nigerian American Questionnaire (NAQ) which contained questions from some previously validated survey instruments. Pearson correlation, simple and multiple regression, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Mann- Whitney U test, and logistic regressions were used to address the five chosen research questions. The data were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS, and R. Results of the study showed that coping skills, English proficiency, social media were individually, positively, and significantly correlated with overall achievement. Spirituality was found to correlate significantly but negatively with achievement. Additionally, the regression analysis showed that all the variables were significant predictors of achievement. Opaleye ABSTRACT Since the inception of the Immigration Act of 1965, Black immigrant groups have formed a historic, yet complex segment of the United States population. While previous research has primarily focused on the second generation of Black immigrants from the Caribbean, there is a lack of research that remains undiscovered on America’s fastest-growing Black immigrant group, African immigrants. This dissertation explores the transnational identity of second-generation Black immigrants of continental African descent in the United States. Using a transnational perspective, I argue that the lives of second-generation African immigrants are shaped by multi-layered relationships that seek to maintain multiple ties between their homeland and their parent’s homeland of Africa. This transnational perspective brings attention to the struggles of second-generation African immigrants. They are replicating their parents’ ethnic identities, maintaining transnational connections, and enduring regular interactions with other racial and ethnic groups while adapting to mainstream America. As a result, these experiences cannot be explained by traditional and contemporary assimilation frameworks because of their prescriptive, elite, white dominance framing and methods that were designed to explain the experiences of European immigrants.

In light of the recent anti-Asian racism due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the long-standing model minority stereotype, studying Asian American identity and activity is a timely and relevant endeavor. The study contributes to a rich understanding of race relations in the United States beyond the black-white binary and furthers research on Asian American representation and use of social media for activism purposes. I use theories of racial formation and racial triangulation to make sense of the current racial order. I also conceptualize Twitter as a space conducive for the creation and maintenance of counterpublics through its affordances and build upon scholarly work on racial biases and representations online. I use critical discourse studies, discourse tracing, and guided interviews to answer the research question, how do Asian Americans express solidarity with other people of color online? I select three hashtags for analysis: #Asians4BlackLives, #JusticeForAkaiGurley, and #NotYourWedge. I also conducted interviews with seventeen respondents who participated in at least one of the hashtags above.

    Odimegwu and Somefun Reproductive Health (2017) 14:16 DOI 10.1186/s12978-017-0284-7 RESEARCH Open Access Ethnicity, gender and risky sexual behaviour among Nigerian youth: an alternative explanation Clifford Odimegwu and Oluwaseyi Dolapo Somefun* Abstract Background: While studies in demography and public health have acknowledged the role of ethnic differences, the influence of ethnicity on youth sexual behaviour in Nigeria has received little or no attention. It is important to know how cultural norms and gender roles, which vary by ethnicity, may promote or prevent risky behaviour. Such information could provide insights into previously undetected sexual behaviour in multi-ethnic situations. Methods: The Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) for 2003, 2008 and 2013 were pooled to examine the relationship between ethnicity and youth sexual reproductive health, proxied by age at sexual debut, multiple sexual partners (MSP) and condom use at last sexual activity, among the 6304 females and 1549 males who reported being sexually active in the four weeks preceding the survey. Multivariate analysis using a Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to determine the risk factors for early sexual activity among young people (15–24). Logistic regression was used to predict condom use at last sexual activity and MSP. Results: The median age at first sexual activity was 16 for females and 17 for males. 43% of male youths used condoms in their last sexual activity, compared to only 16% among females and a higher number of males (81%) had multiple sexual partners compared to females (35%). For females, elevated risks of first sex was higher among Hausa/Fulanis aged 15–19 and elevated risk of first sex was higher among Yoruba males.

    EUROPEAN FOOD ISSUES This book examines the connection between food and identity in the Nigerian diaspora community in Belgium. Encounters between people from different cultures do not lead to a simple adaptation of the diet, but usually give rise to some kind of fusion of new and indigenous food habits. The author questions the relationship between what Nigerian migrants in the diaspora Maureen Duru eat, their self-perception and how they engage with outsiders. Starting with a historical introduction about the country, this study examines what aspects of the Nigerian food culture is retained and what has changed. This is refl ected by the dynamics in the Nigerian homes, especially the gender roles. The new generation of Nigerians, who see Belgium as home, also hang on to a Nigerian diet that remains not only an important part of who they are, but is also used in the creation of cultural boundaries and group identities. However, the infl uence of the new environment is very present because each diaspora community, wherever and whenever, must adapt. Skills such as language and social norms are indeed necessary to survive in the new environment. Yet, food plays a prominent role: on the one hand, it contributes to the affi rmation of Nigerian feelings, and on the other hand, food serves as a means of communication with the host country. The social adjustment of youth from these families has not been systematically examined by psychologists. More detailed consideration of outcomes of youth in these families can expand research on children of immigration in useful directions. The present study compared academic outcomes of youth from African immigrant families with those of African American youth—i.e., native born Black Americans whose family have resided in the America since the 19th century. It was hypothesized that socialization and individual conceptions of the ethnic group would influence academic achievement. A mixed method approach was employed to address the historically ambivalent relationship between ethnic identity and achievement. Mediating variables – socialization, students’ attitudes and students’ orientations – were proposed to explain both a general and ethnic-socialization model of academic achievement. Among the quantitative measures, reported parental education attainment was the strongest positive predictor of achievement in the general model. Significant, moderated mediation effects were found in the ethnic-socialization model, which examined the positive and negative association between ethnic identity and academic ii outcomes simultaneously.
