It is the annunciation of salvation for the world. It is the first feast of the Lord. It is an annunciation of love, because the reason of the Incarnation and Redemption is the love of God for the world. The Lord Christ has offered to us rejoicing annunciations and has presented God to us as a loving Father. What shall we then announce to people? Let there be in your mouths, all of you, a rejoicing annunciation for everybody. Pope Shenouda III 3 The feast of the Annunciation comes every year on the 29th of Baramhat.

  • Saint Matthews
Luis Tristán (1580/1585 - 1624) Saint Matthews Oil on canvas Measurements: 107 x 77 cm Spanish XVII century Painted about 1613 Description Apostle Saint Matthews? Saint Jude Tadeo?, Saint Matías ? or Saint Thomas ? AN APOSTLE BY LUIS TRISTÁN: RELATIONSHIP WITH EL GRECO, RIBERA, VELAZQUEZ AND THE NEW ITALIAN NATURALISTIC CURRENTS. The work we are studying represents an apostle in all his splendour and monumentality, whose iconographic identification is doubtful since the only attribute appearing is the halberd which is common to various apostles. Saint Matthews, creator of the first Gospel and Saint Jude Tadeo, also represented by El Greco with a halberd, are the most probable; San Matías is less probable due to having been martirized with an axe; and Saint Thomas, although the attribute does not correspond, since he died pierced by a lance, also could be the apostle represented due to his close relationship to the composition with the Saint Thomas of the Apostles by El Greco (El Greco Museum, Toledo) and the Saint Thomas by Velazquez (Orleans Museum). The painter certainly did not wish to centre his attention on an individualized identification of the saint, but rather on his general symbology as apostle: the halberd or lance with regard to his martyrdom as a form of death, the heavy tunic, with imposing folds, referring to his mighty task of spreading the Gospel continuously for the Church and the strong expression on his face in allusion to his tenacious character and indomitable conviction needed to accomplish his mission. The work can be attributed to the best work of Luis Tristán, and due to its quality may be considered a masterpiece carried out just on his return from his journey to Italy, in about 1613 when his spirit was still teeming excitedly with the ideas gathered in El Greco’s workshop and his contact with the modern Roman naturalistic currents shared with the young José Ribera.

  • Gallery Spanish Art, 1600-1700
Gallery Spanish Art, 1600-1700 Spain was a part of the Hapsburg realm, which also included the Dutch provinces and the Holy Roman Empire in central Europe. In the late 16th century, King Philip II began an effort to lead Spain to the forefront of European culture. He imported the talent of the Venetian painter Titian, and during the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV, artists such as Velázquez and Murillo gained renown throughout the continent, trumpeting the refinement and position of the Spanish court. Philip IV rivaled his grandfather, Philip II, commissioning magnificent portraits and decorative cycles from Italian, French, Flemish, as well as Spanish artists of rising stature. Spanish painting was heavily influenced by northern European and Italian art, and native artists responded to the predilection for naturalistic detail and form while embracing the drama and emotion of the Italian Baroque. Bold contrasts between light and shadow – a technique known as tenebroso – created dramatic settings for religious scenes. Artists used strong diagonal compositions and pulled figures to the picture plane to create the illusion that the painted canvas extended into the viewer’s space, facilitating the mystical experience of personal interaction with the divine. The Docent Collections Handbook 2007 Edition Bartolomé Estabán Murillo Spanish, 1618-1682, active in Seville Saint Joseph with the Standing Infant Christ Child, c. 1670-75 Oil on canvas Bequest of John Ringling, 1936, SN 349 Though usually depicted with the Virgin Mary, in the 17th century the Christ child was often shown with his father, St. Joseph, who had become the focus of his own cult.

  • Saint Peter and Saint Paul EL GRECO from the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg Rome 15 December 2019 - 5 March 2020
2019 Saint Peter and Saint Paul EL GRECO From the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg Rome 15 december 2019 - 5 march 2020 2 The show is the second event in a three-year collaboration between the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the famous Russian museum. A prestigious agreement arising from a desire to increase cultural dealings between Italy and Russia, through the exhibition of masterpieces from the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. After the great success of the previous year, when the exhibition of Michelangelo’s Crouching Boy attracted over 22,000 visitors, the 2019 choice is a genuine tribute to the city of Rome. The subjects of the masterpiece – Saint Peter and Saint Paul – are the patron saints of the Italian capital, and their showing at the palazzo rhinoceros established them as “tutelary deities” of the space and, by extension, the city of Rome. The exhibition, promoted by the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the State Hermitage Museum, and organized by Il Cigno GG Edizioni in collaboration con Ermitage Italia and Villaggio Globale International, is akin in ideal terms to the El Greco retrospective held at the Grand Palais in Paris. 3 THE WORK Having entered the collections of the museum on the banks of the Neva in Saint Petersburg in 1911, a gift from Pëtr Pavlovič Durnovo, governor-general of Moscow during the Russian Revolution of 1905, the work is usually on display in the museum’s room of Spanish masterpieces, next to one of the Skylight Halls characterizing the so-called New Hermitage built between 1839 and 1851.

  • El Greco's Espolio
Introibo ad Altare Dei: El Greco’s ‘Espolio’ in the Context of Church and State in Post-Tridentine Spain By ROBERT FRANCIS SWAIN A thesis submitted to the Department of Art in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston Ontario Canada August, 2011 Copyright © Robert Francis Swain, 2011 Abstract In the vestry of the cathedral church of Santa Maria in Toledo hangs a large painting by El Greco entitled El Espolio, the ‘Disrobing of Christ’. Executed shortly after his arrival in Spain the painting marks a major stylistic departure from the artist’s earlier work and would command attention on that basis alone. The subject, while iconographically obscure, is, at another remove, utterly familiar as a Passion scene tied to a well known iconographical canon. Compositionally, the Christ figure predominates but the ‘legionnaire’ occupies a contrasting and almost equivalent space in his carapace of steel. These figures beg for further elaboration I will argue that this painting can be read as a nexus between a reformed liturgy and a post-Tridentine programme of Church renewal in Spain allied to a monarchical programme of nación under Philip II (1527-98) that was essentially one and the same. The salient questions needing a response are these: How, in a vestry, can we expect such a subject to have much impact beyond the very limited audience it was designed for? This is the crux of the matter in many ways. What in the painting suggests more than the straightforward analysis of the subject matter? What in the times suggests another reading of this great work of art? The pursuit of the answers to these questions constitutes the driving force behind this investigation.
