Archaeological Investigations Project 2004 Post-determination & Non-planning East Midlands Derby Derby 3 /1 (E.56.S006) SK 34853746 DE1 3ER BELPER ROAD, DERBY An Archaeological Watching Brief at Belper Road, Derby Axton, J Nottingham : Trent & Peak Archaeological Unit, 2004, 13pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Trent & Peak Archaeological Unit An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for a garage. The area was found to have been disturbed by tree roots and modern activity. A ditch, with a similar profile to a Roman gully was recorded, as well as a piece of decorated Samian Ware, with a few other Roman pottery sherds. The site lay on the edge of medieval Derby and possibly within the Anglo-Saxon settlement area. The watching brief revealed a features containing medieval and post-medieval pottery. The ground was found to be heavily compacted, thought to be related to the Midland Railway embankment which stood on the site until 1971. No archaeological remains were encountered within the excavation depth. It was apparent during the course of this work that the proposed extension would to an extent be located in the same area as a former west wing of the building. Finds retrieved from associated demolition debris were dated to the later 18th century. A capped brick built well was also observed during the work. Scarring on the surviving face of the Grade II Listed early 18th century farmhouse also served to illustrate the location of the demolished structure. Modern linear features, a pebble surface, ceramic land- drains and general demolition debris were recorded, as well as post-medieval finds including clay pipes, and possible sherds of Roman colour-coated ware and a whitish mortaria sherd. Only made-up ground and natural deposits with no evidence of archaeological activity on the site. This report was the result of observations made on the eastern half of the site, further work remained to be completed. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered during the course of the groundworks. The site was near to a medieval enclosure and only 325m from a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle known locally as Knob Hill. No significant archaeological deposits were found within the site, apart from an area of a former coal store. It appeared that the area had remained in use a pasture land from the medieval period to the present day. The decorated grave slabs of John and Patience Curzon buried inside the church in the 17th century. No archaeological deposits were reached during the watching brief. [Au(adp)] SMR primary record number:836 Archaeological periods represented: PM 3 /10 (E.17.S005) SK 15027828 SK17 8RT CASTLETON MARKET PLACE, CASTLETON Archaeological Inspection Resurfacing at Castleton Market Place Allen, T Bakewell : Peak District National Park Authority, 2004, 5pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Peak District National Park Authority In the course of resurfacing of the market place at Castleton, Derbyshire an archaeological inspection was carried out. The market place was found to have surviving 19th century stone surfacing (metalling) below the turf. The survival of this level suggested that medieval deposits associated with market trading or earlier activity may have survived in good condition below it. An Archaeological Topographic Survey Mottershead, G Manchester : University of Manchester Archaeological Unit, 2004, 33pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: University of Manchester Archaeological Unit An archaeological topographic survey was undertaken in advance of mineral extraction. A photographic record was also made of any identified features. The remains of nine limekilns with several associated extraction pits and spoil mounds were surveyed along with a feature possibly associated with the lime kiln production process. Also observed in the south-eastern area of the site was a truncated earthwork which may have represented the remains of a Bronze Age dish barrow. The work revealed a sequence of undated alluvial deposits overlying natural sands and gravels. The alluvial deposits comprised flood episodes and infilling of a former channel of the Trent. Finds were only retrieved from the topsoil layers and comprised 19th-20th century pottery and a single burnt stone.
