Uyghur Dispossession, Culture Work and Terror Capitalism in a Chinese Global City Darren T. Byler a Dissertati
Spirit Breaking: Uyghur Dispossession, Culture Work and Terror Capitalism in a Chinese Global City Darren T. Byler A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2018 Reading Committee: Sasha Su-Ling Welland, Chair Ann Anagnost Stevan Harrell Danny Hoffman Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Anthropology ©Copyright 2018 Darren T. Byler University of Washington Abstract Spirit Breaking: Uyghur Dispossession, Culture Work and Terror Capitalism in a Chinese Global City Darren T. Byler Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Sasha Su-Ling Welland, Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies This study argues that Uyghurs, a Turkic-Muslim group in contemporary Northwest China, and the city of Ürümchi have become the object of what the study names “terror capitalism.” This argument is supported by evidence of both the way state-directed economic investment and security infrastructures (pass-book systems, webs of technological surveillance, urban cleansing processes and mass internment camps) have shaped self-representation among Uyghur migrants and Han settlers in the city. It analyzes these human engineering and urban planning projects and the way their effects are contested in new media, film, television, photography and literature. It finds that this form of capitalist production utilizes the discourse of terror to justify state investment in a wide array of policing and social engineering systems that employs millions of state security workers. The project also presents a theoretical model for understanding how Uyghurs use cultural production to both build and refuse the development of this new economic formation and accompanying forms of gendered, ethno-racial violence. -
The Best of the Whitesell Prize Competition 2014–2015
The Best of the Whitesell Prize Competition 2014–2015 The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes for Expository Writing in General Education 12th Edition, Fall 2015 The Writing Center at Franklin and Marshall College Lancaster, PA 17604-3003 717.291.3866 Preface The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes honor excellent student writing in Franklin and Marshall’s General Education curriculum. Each year the Writing Center invites submissions and awards a prize for the best essay in both Connections I and Connections II. This year, for the final time, a prize was also awarded for essays written in a Foundations course. This booklet contains the prize-winning and honorable mention essays from this year’s competition. Named for the emerita Director of F&M’s Writing Center, the Whitesell Prizes serve several goals. In addition to honoring both Phyllis’s dedication to teaching writing and the achievements of the College’s students writers themselves, the Whitesell Prizes seek to add to the vitality of the College’s General Education curriculum by getting students to think of their intellectual efforts as ongoing enterprises (revision, often after the essay has been graded and the class is completed, is a requirement of the competition). Also, by involving faculty and Writing Center tutors in the judging of the essays—and by making this booklet available to the College community—the Whitesell competition hopes to foster a fuller awareness of the interesting work being done in our Foundations and First-Year Writing Requirement courses. My great appreciation goes to this year’s Whitesell Prize judges. -
The Secret of Terror Castle!”
Terror Castle | 1 THETHE SECRETSECRET OFOF TERRORTERROR CASTLECASTLE Robert Arthur Terror Castle | 2 NOTICE TO THE READER: You are under no obligation whatever to read a single word of this introduction. ALFRED HITCHCOCK Terror Castle | 3 IINTRODUCTION I SEEM TO BE constantly introducing something. For years I’ve been introducing my television programmes. I’ve introduced motion pictures. And I’ve introduced books of mystery, ghost and suspense stories for my fans to shiver with. Now I find myself introducing a trio of lads who call themselves The Three Investigators, and ride in a gold-plated Rolls-Royce, solving mysteries, riddles, enigmas and conundrums of all kinds. Preposterous, isn’t it? Frankly I would prefer to have nothing to do with these three youths, but I rashly promised to introduce them. And I am a man of my word – even though the promise was extorted from me by nothing less than sheer skulduggery, as you will see. To the business at hand, then. The three boys who call themselves The Three Investigators are Bob Andrews, Pete Crenshaw, and Jupiter Jones, all of whom live in Rocky Beach, a small city on the shore of the Pacific Ocean some miles from Hollywood. Bob Andrews, who is small but wiry, is something of a scholarly type, although with an adventurous spirit. Pete Crenshaw is quite tall and muscular. Jupiter Jones is – well, I shall refrain from giving you my own personal opinion of Jupiter Jones. You will have to decide about him for yourself after reading the pages that follow. I shall simply stick to the facts. -

And she said he was really nice.” Suzie was walking to school with her cousin, Mac. Only Suzie nev- er just walked. Suzie twirled. Always. “A goat? Goats don’t live in houses or have furniture. You got it all wrong. As usual.” Mac was ten and three quarters. Suzie had just turned eight. Suzie did a giant twirl, kicking up dust. “You’ll see, smarty pants.” They ran into their kitchen in search of food, just like they did every day after school. Only today…was different. Because today, standing in the kitchen, was a goat, wearing an apron while searching through their cabinets. “Hi! I bet you’re our new neighbor. I’m Suzie and this is my cousin, Mac. He’s ten and three quarters. I’m eight. He lives with us ‘cuz his mom died and his dad is off in the jungles somewhere looking for the Terror Bird.” Mac rolled his eyes. “Tell him our whole life story, why don’t you?” “Good afternoon,” the goat said, handing them a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. -

Legendary Guitars & Musical Treasures
LEGENDARY GUITARS & MUSICAL TREASURES DECEMBER 2, 2017 Legendary Guitars & Musical Treasures - Dec 2 1: Les Paul electric guitar signed to Bruce Springsteen USD 5,000 - 7,000 An Epiphone electric guitar signed to Bruce Springsteen, from Les Paul. Serial #9400536. Les respected Bruce and thought he was a "cool dude." The consigner of this item, who worked for Les Paul, had given Bruce an acoustic guitar Les had signed in the 1990s. When Les heard he was on tour a few years later, he signed this guitar to Bruce. Lester William Polsfuss was an inventor and musician. A talented musician as well as inventor, Les Paul is credited with various recording innovations and his skilled guitar playing, however he is probably best known for helping to design the Gibson Les Paul. The consigner of this item worked directly with Les Paul. 2: 1963 Jan & Dean Master Tapes USD 3,000 - 5,000 Two master tracks from the album "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'". Recorded on February 20th, 1963. Track list: "Rhythm of the Rain" and "Mr. Bass Man." Arranged and produced by Jan Berry and supervised by Lou Adler, "Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'" is the duo's first Liberty album, and included the usual backup of high quality musicians, giving Jan & Dean ample opportunity for vocal acrobatics and comic antics in "Mr. Bass Man," while their rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain" has a low-key charm that wasn't usually associated with the duo.Jan & Dean were an American rock duo made up of Jan Berry and Dean Torrence.
