It is believed that the “Doctors’ Plot” was the initial action of this campaign. In January, 1953, it was announced that Soviet of- ficials had uncovered a conspiracy amongst senior doctors, most of them Jewish, to poison highranking members of the government. Following the arrests of these doctors, the anti-Semitic press ran rampant, with widespread character assassinations and accu- sations against Jews in general, and many doctors with Jewish names were dismissed and arrested. Nine days before the doctors’ trial was to begin, Sta- lin died suddenly. Stalin’s successors dismissed the charges on lack of evidence, and it was later discov- ered that the whole conspiracy was a fabrication. Note: The day that Stalin died, March 5, 1953, happened to fall on the holiday of Purim. Rodríguez Gómez** Abstract: This analysis attempts to show the relations between the individual psyche and the contents of the collective unconscious. Following Von Franzs analytical technique, the tragic action in King Lear will be read as an individuation process that will rescue archetypal contents and solve existential paradoxes that cause an imbalance between the ego and the self, leading to self-destruction. Once communication is eased and balance is restored, the transformation-seeking process that engaged the design of the play itself becomes resolved, and events can be led to a conventional tragic resolution. Jungian analysis will therefore provide a critical framework to unveil the subconscious contents that tear the character of the king between annihilation and survival, the anima complex that affects the king, responding thus for the action of the play and its centuries-old success. Five of those killed were among the most prominent surviving Yiddish writers in the Soviet Union, and so for many people their deaths came to mark an end of Soviet Yiddish culture and a final proof of Stalin’s murderous anti-Semitism. It should be noted that “The Night of the Murdered Poets” is a misnomer on two important counts. First, only four of the thirteen victims were poets, though several others were prominent writers, intellectuals, and cultural figures; what really connected the group was their affiliation with an organization called the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee. While the JAFC was supported by the Soviet government during World War Two as it worked to rally international Jewish support (and funding) for the war effort, after the war the very fact that the committee appealed to Jews around the world caused it to be branded as nationalist and therefore criminal in the Soviet Union. Secondly, the night of the execution was only the end of an ordeal that had gone on for years.

Gross tells the story of what happened after the Germans took power in the half Jewish, half ethnically Polish town of Jedwabne, Poland. The occupying Germans indicated to the Polish mayor of the town that he and his supporters could do what they liked with the Jews. The mayor then coordinated a massacre in which gangs of Poles killed virtually the entire Jewish population. Gross’s book raised a furor in Poland and elsewhere because it showed the extent of local col- laboration with Nazi anti-Semitism. But it also underlined what was al- ready taken to be a central message of the Holocaust: the Jews had few if any reliable allies. During the German occupation others assisted the Germans, or at least stood by, while the Jews were annihilated. In many parts of occupied eastern Europe this was in fact what hap- pened. The major Jewish underground movements, in the ghettos of Warsaw, Bialystok, Vilna, and Kovno, were able to find few allies out- side the ghettos. There were individual non-Jews who risked their lives either helping individual Jews to escape or assisting the Jewish under- ground movements, and there were small organizations that tried to help. But there was no substantial, organized solidarity from outside the ghettos either in Poland or in Lithuania. In Poland, the Council for Aid to Jews, more commonly known by its acronym, Zegota, saved the lives of thousands of Jews.

    Ken Colston King Lear and the Catholic Drama of Three Households and Four Loves “That word love, which greybeards call divine.” henry vi, part iii Hardly anyone now reads the world’s greatest work of literature for its dramatization of Catholic wisdom. By the 1960s, according to R. A. Foakes, critical opinion had crowned King Lear as Shake- speare’s greatest play, and it is still indeed common to hear it main- tained that Lear is the greatest work of literature ever written in any language. Foakes attributes this rise mainly to the apocalyptic and nihilistic mood of the Cold War. And yet during the same period, he points out, the accepted reading of Lear changed from that of a play concerned with a “pilgrimage to redemption” to one offering “Shake- speare’s bleakest and most despairing vision of suffering, all hints of consolation undermined or denied.”1 It is not surprising that a nihilistic, skeptical age would see only nihilism and skepticism in King Lear. To be sure, the play has some of the ugliest, darkest minutes in all of literature: two ungrateful daugh- ters strip their aged father of his property and drive him outdoors unprotected into a raging storm as he declines into raving madness; a betrayed spy of the state has both eyes gouged out on stage, one logos 16:4 fall 2013 16 logos in cruel jest; a father reconciled to his only loving daughter finds her hanged right after their reconciliation, and another father suffers from a broken heart when he learns that he has wronged his loving son; throughout it all, the cosmic order seems indifferent and even hostile.
