The Boston Red Sox Monday, November 5, 2018 * The Boston Globe Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Ian Kinsler win Gold Glove awards Peter Abraham Jackie Bradley Jr. didn’t need a Gold Glove to be recognized as one of the best center fielders in the major leagues. Red Sox fans have known that for several years. But Bradley certainly did deserve one and it finally came his away on Sunday night. Bradley, right fielder Mookie Betts, and second baseman Ian Kinsler were Gold Glove winners. The Red Sox and Atlanta Braves each had three. A finalist in 2014 and ’16, Bradley was selected ahead of Mike Trout (Angels) and Adam Engel (White Sox) in voting done by managers and coaches. Bradley was second among MLB center fielders with an 8.7 ultimate zone rating and tied for the American League lead with eight assists. There’s no statistic for improbable acrobatic catches but Bradley had a series of those. Betts won for the third consecutive year, the first Red Sox player to do that since Dwight Evans won five in a row from 1981-85. Betts is now one of seven Red Sox players to win three or more Gold Gloves. Betts led all right fielders with 20 defensive runs saved. He has 83 DRS the last three seasons. Kinsler, 36, is now a two-time winner. He also won with the Tigers in 2016. In 128 games for the Angels and Red Sox, Kinsler had 10 DRS, the most in the AL at second base. Andrew Benintendi (left field) and Mitch Moreland (first base) were finalists.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 25, 2020 * The Boston Globe Red Sox minor leaguer tests positive for coronavirus Julian McWilliams The Red Sox announced Tuesday night that a minor leaguer had tested positive for COVID-19. The player’s positive test occurred March 23 following his return home. The Sox said he was last at Fenway South March 15. The Red Sox kept the player’s name confidential and believe he contracted the virus after leaving spring training. As a precaution, the Red Sox decided to shut down all activity at Fenway South for at least two weeks. The facility will undergo a deep cleaning to disinfect the area. The Sox have instructed all players who came in close contact with the minor leaguer to self-quarantine for two weeks. Manager Ron Roenicke noted during a conference call last week that most of the major league players had returned home, but approximately eight to 15 players stayed back to work out. During that call, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said although a player hadn’t tested positive for the virus to that point, he knew it was a possibility. “That’s something we’re being very vigilant in monitoring,” Bloom said. “You look around and where this is going, obviously we know that it’s very, very possible that it’s going to happen at some point. We’re just trying to make sure everyone is educated and, again, stay in touch with everybody.” A new group is advocating for minor leaguers to be paid above the poverty line Michael Silverman A new group thinks minor league baseball players ought to earn a salary above the poverty line.

  • A's News Clips, Thursday, October 22, 2009 Making the Grade
A’s News Clips, Thursday, October 22, 2009 Making the grade: Offense Beat writer Mychael Urban assesses A's hitters By Mychael Urban / MLB.com "Making the Grade" is a four-part series analyzing the performances of various units of the 2009 Oakland A's. It kicked off last Wednesday with starting pitching, followed by a look at the bullpen last Friday. Today: offense, followed by a look at the defense on Friday. OAKLAND -- Coming off two seasons in which their offense ranked near the bottom of the American League in virtually every significant category, the A's entered 2009 with high hopes and one of the best on-paper lineups in the league. Outfielder Matt Holliday, a legitimate superstar over the previous three seasons in Colorado, had been acquired in a blockbuster trade. First baseman/designated hitter Jason Giambi, who'd hit 36 home runs with 96 RBIs and a .373 on- base percentage with the Yankees in 2008, had been brought back for a hugely hyped homecoming. Shortstop Orlando Cabrera, a proven winner, represented an offensive upgrade over his star-crossed predecessor, Bobby Crosby. And Nomar Garciaparra, who was introduced as a free-agent signee on the same spring day as Cabrera, was penciled in to spell Giambi at first, Eric Chavez at third and serve as the top right-handed option at DH. A's fans know all too well how far short the aforementioned expectations fell. Holliday and Giambi were abject failures in Oakland and were gone by August, as was Cabrera, who wasn't nearly as bad but wasn't an impact player, either.
