The Pan-Icarian Youth Conference that was held on January 26-27 on Clearwater Beach was an enormous success. The Conference, hosted by Chapter Helios #19 Clearwater, gathered youth delegates from the following chapters: V.I Chembithes #2 Akron, Ikaros #7 Pittsburgh, Foutrides #8 Chicago, Spanos/Areti #9 Detroit, Atheras #12 Philadelphia, Lefkas #16 Baltimore, N’Ikaria #25 Northwest Indiana, Panagia #26 Buffalo.There were many activities that weekend for the youth to enjoy. The delegates stayed at Shephard’s Beach Resort located on Clearwater Beach. On Friday night the Helios Chapter showed true Ikarian hospitality and invited the delegates to their clubhouse for “Meze Mazi” Many Helios members donated their time and culinary skills for the event which enabled the delegates to meet and greet one another. Afterwards the delegates had free entrance to the Wave Night Club located at Shephard’s Beach Resort. Like true Ikariotes they danced the night away.

Many issues were discussed from how to become more active in your local chapter, learning parliamentary procedures, applying for scholarships, internship programs, environmental issues affecting Ikaria and plans are in the works for an Ikarian youth trip. After the conference all speakers and delegates were invited to lunch. Saturday evening the delegates had free entrance to the dinner/dance hosted by Chapter Helios. More than 400 people were seated for dinner and more followed for the dance. This weekend allowed the youth to form bonds with each other and gave everyone the opportunity to feel more involved with the Brotherhood. It was a pleasure planning this event that is essential to the future of our organization. I witnessed friendships being made and the true spirit of brotherly love. I can say with confidence that the Ikarian youth had a weekend they will not forget.

The Undergraduate Merit-Based Pan-Icarian Scholarship, which is an award of $1,500, covers one academic year. Eligible students may receive the scholarship no more than twice provided that they (1) remain enrolled full-time, (2) maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, (3) re-apply for subsequent annual scholarships, and (4) comply with all other scholarship rules. Scholarship recipients that drop or withdraw from any courses, resulting in a matriculation status of less than full-time in any given academic period the award covers, will not be eligible to receive a scholarship for the following academic year. While the primary variable in determining whether or not to award this scholarship is merit, financial need is often considered as a secondary variable.

Ikapia Magazine Page 23 PHAROS CLEVELAND #3 The members of Cleveland Chapter Pharos are trying to keep warm this winter. In October the club held a spaghetti dinner to raise money for an orphanage in Athens, Greece. We were able to raise over $1500 with the help of our members. The food was donated by a local restaurant and cooked by some of our members. On December 9th the Chapter hosted our annual Christ- mas party. It was very well attended; we had over 50 children, parents, and friends. Thanks to Harry Jordanides for playing Santa for us. Also thank you to The Ikariotes dancing on New Year’s Eve Matina (Parianos) Salamalekis for planning the party.

We had many events and outings over the past couple of months that have kept us very busy. Many of our members attended a fundraiser in order to support the re-election of Ohio’s Ikarian Congressman Zack Space. It was truly an honor for us to help one of our own on such an important mission.

We then hosted a loukoumades on November 17th. It was a wonderful event with many of our members enjoying the tasty treats.

Santa Claus came to town on December 22. All of our little ones had a magical afternoon, We later held our annual Fall Dance on October 20th. We had planned a Christmas party for the children, but Mother Nature chose to interfere. Cleveland experienced 6-10 inches of snowfall causing the party to be postponed.

Our New Years Eve party was an on-going success with many friends and family sharing the great times of the New Year. The dancing lasted late into the wee hours of the morning and everyone had a great time. Petro Parianos again entertained the members and friends with his great violin playing while people danced the traditional Ikarian dances. We are planning our traditional Winter/Spring Casino trip to Detroit. This time, we hope to visit the new MGM Casino to leave our money in the machines and on the various tables. Our Activities Chairperson, Denise Lefas, has put together some ideas for this coming year. We will be taking a trip to Akron to meet with the Akron chapter, and hopefully build an alliance for participation of both clubs to working together and sharing Ikarian friendship. The inevitable impact upon the development of the author’s personality and character, as well as all facets of life in Greece brought about by the war, the occupation, the famine, the flight to Palestine, and the subsequent civil war was profound. It is presented realistically in the first half of the book, from historical and political points of view, as objectively as humanly possible. The second half depicts the author as a university professor in North America, embroiled in continuous struggle, trying to cope with educational, societal, xenophobic, anti-foreign, jingoistic, and racial issues while striving to advance his own scientific career in the face of numerous family disasters. The reminiscence of the blue sea surrounding the faraway island provided him with the peace of mind needed to cope with such complex and difficult issues. The following is a review published in the November, 2007 issue of ArtNews Magazine Peter Calaboyias Bluewaters International Images Sewickley, Pennsylvania After nearly a half century of working with bronze, steel, aluminum, marble, and wood, the Greek-born sculptor Peter Calaboyias has displayed a newfound passion for the brush and canvas, as was evident in this exuberant exhibition, titled “Bluewaters.” All 26 paintings were done in the past two and a half years, after his return to the Aegean island of Ikaria, following a long spell of teaching in the United States. In the paintings, a thesaurus of blues —ultramarine, cobalt, Prussian, cerulean, phthalo—was applied in sensuous, horizontal swaths across expanses of canvas. Sitting under the trees at now at last the horn blasts Kyrie Razis' kaphenion people scurry to join the waiting for the Aighaion - crowds at the dock sunlight through the leaves waiting for the Samaina dappling my notebook, The American kids have finished empty coffee cups, white, taking pictures thick grinds inside, unread, finished hugging, taking names, half-empty glasses of water, addresses, crying Charlie's crust of bread, cluttering the round yellow table Sophia sits beside me in her red T-shirt with the Eleni in her thigh-length white borders, lavender beach shirt white jeans, Maria in her khaki red-lettered eats a souvlaki MADE IN GREECE T-shirt "Pull your chair this way," she saying goodbye to the Saffo girls says to Maria, Sophia and Argie "so I can watch the Samaina dock. Pana off at the OTE Oh, I love it!" ALPHA AND OMEGA

On top of a hillock, in the cemetery, where my grandparents repose, are two junipers locked in a forever embrace. They grew side by side complimenting each other to become one; making it impossible to tell where one begins and the other ends. They stand entwined, God’s monument to those who had lived, loved, and lost each other among whom were Granny and Granddad. People of the earth, they planted seeds of caring and stored provisions to nourish body and soul. They capered over highlands and trudged through lowlands needing each other to be whole. But the visible path ended. Granny was taken with real cause. Granddad soon followed with none; he merely stopped breathing to join her in reaping the harvest they’d sown. They were buried side by side, unable to touch. As fate and Greek island custom would have it, in time, their remains were exhumed, stored into one space-saving case, filed in the niche of a crypt. There they lie, bones intermingling forever; making it impossible to tell where one begins and the other ends.
