Dr Chaney is broadly interested in the dynamics of African-American family life. Her primary research focuses on the narratives of African-Americans in dating, cohabiting and married relationships, with a particular interest in relationship formation, maintenance and stability. In addition to publishing over 70 manuscripts in various journals in the United States and abroad, she has also presented her research during local, state and national conferences. She is on the editorial board of Family Relations and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Hip-Hop Studies (JHHS). She recently published Black Women in Leadership: Their Historical and Contemporary Contributions, a co-edited book with Dannielle Joy Davis, which explores the leadership experiences of Black women. Donna Culbreth is the founder and CEO of the National Girls and Women of Color Council, Inc., Executive Producer and host of Complexity Talk Radio, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Colorism Studies, and managing partner at Culbreth, Jung-Kim & Severino, LLC, USA. Dr Culbreth’s projects and research include topics that are complex in nature because she believes that not only dialogues, but initiatives, strategies and programs must be developed to address the plethora of societal ills. She focuses on colorism, racism, identity, racial unity, issues affecting girls and women of color, people of color, and quality education for students of color. Dannielle Joy Davis is a tenured Associate Professor of Higher Education at Saint Louis University, USA. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she has studied and conducted research in Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Egypt, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Her interdisciplinary research examines the experiences of marginalized groups in educational settings, the role of organizational policy and practice in the promotion or inhibition of egalitarian academic and occupational outcomes, and spirituality in the workplace and other learning environments. Dr Davis is the elected Chair of the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA’s) Spirituality and Education Special Interest Group (SIG) and has served within the leadership of AERA’s Qualitative Research SIG. She has published numerous books and over 50 refereed journal articles, book chapters, academic commentaries, volumes, and reviews. Her most recent books are Specialists: Passions and Careers and When All Else Fails: Motherhood During Precarious Times (both forthcoming in 2017). She is Vice President of Professional Development for the National Girls and Women of Color Council, is a longstanding Leadership Team member with Sisters of the Academy Institute, and serves on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Colorism Studies. Denise Davis-Maye, PhD, LCSW, is Professor of Social Work at Alabama State University, USA. She is a licensed clinical social worker with an interest in the psychosocial development of African-American girls, socio-cultural and socio-historical influences on African-American families, and asset building and retention in African-American families and communities. Ahmed Elshenawy holds a PhD in marketing from Monarch Business School, Switzerland. He is has more than 15 years of experience as an academic. He specialises in management, business skills, banking, and cultural and communication behavior. Dustin Hellberg is Assistant Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at Yonsei University, South Korea. He is the author of three books in fiction, poetry and philosophy of 1 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 2 – Issue 1 – Spring 2017 science, as well as many articles across a variety of disciplines. He divides his time between Korea and Iowa. Tanya Kane is Assistant Professor of Behavioural Science, College of Medicine, Qatar. As an anthropologist who specializes in behavioural science, she has published numerous articles and presented at international conferences on the intersections of gender, education, medicine and globalization. Yun Ha Kim received her Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from Yonsei University, South Korea. She is continuing her graduate studies in the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities (MAPH) at the University of Chicago, USA. Frida Rahmita is a writer and journalist. She has worked as Assistant Lecturer in the Creative Advertising, Visual Communication and Design Department of Bina Nusantara University, Indonesia, and as Editor of ViewMagz. She holds postgraduate degrees in International Relations and Media Culture. Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar’s research interests include writing pedagogy, race, gender and postcolonial literature. She has published articles on these subjects in a variety of academic journals including Teaching American Literature: A Journal of Theory and Practice, South Asian Review and Annals of Urdu Studies. Rumsha Shahzad is a graduate of Georgetown University, where she was an active research assistant in the social sciences and humanities for faculty in Education City, Qatar. She worked on several studies, including an undergraduate research experience project focused on women, education and professionalization. She has co-authored journal articles and book chapters about women and contemporary authorship, Qatari women and peer tutors. She is currently working on issues related to migrant workers’ rights with international corporations and NGOs. Porranee Singpliam is a PhD student at the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication, Waseda University, Japan. She obtained her Master’s degree from Waseda University and her Bachelor’s from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Her research interests lie in gender studies, media representation and nationalism. Currently, she is investigating the interrelations between the conceptualization of Thai femininity and its cultural representations. 2 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 2 – Issue 1 – Spring 2017 Introduction Welcome to the latest issue of the IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies. Once again, the editorial team was swamped with submissions and it took us a long time to decide which contributions to include. This is always a painful task, as so many worthwhile texts unfortunately cannot be fitted within the confines of a single issue. Much has happened since the last issue came out. The negative implications of the Brexit vote in Europe have become all the clearer; many people continued to migrate to Europe and many of them tragically died; thousands of our colleagues were fired from their jobs and/or imprisoned in Turkey; and the US elections were held, with an erratic (elected as a) result. But even with all these setbacks, it seems that there is always a way to continue work in and through the cultural arena. This is reminiscent of China Miéville’s 2016 novella The Last Days of New Paris, in which the spectres of surrealism come alive to fight fascists
