Anahtar kavramlar: II. Barış Harekatı, Kıbrıslı Türkler, dini yaşayış, dini algılama, ibadet, inanç. BÜNYAMİN SOLMAZ Title of the Thesis/ A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH ON THE RELIGIOUS LIVES Dissertation OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS (EXAMPLE OF MORPHOU) Abstract: Turkish Cypriots are the second most populous ethnic group on the island. Until 1960, the British colonial island in 1960, the Greek-Turkish-British partnership laid the foundations of a new republic. However, this new state did not last very long. The never-ending idea of enosis by the Greeks led to their ethnic neighbors who had been living together for hundreds of years. Turkey intervened on the island as a result of using the right of guarantee. II. After the Peace Operation, the island took its present form. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established and became an independent Turkish state. As a matter of fact, the world gives unlimited rights to the corrupt Greek Cypriot Administration instead of recognizing this state. If Turkey is located next to the kin since the first day. This study we did II. Peace Operation is accepted as the beginning and it shows the change experienced in Turkish Cypriots. II. Peace Operation Turkish Cypriots with Turkey that has close relations with nearly a century apart. Historical and sociological information that is benefiting from interactions with nearly fifty years of research took place between Turkey and the TRNC have been made. The religious lives and perceptions of Turkish Cypriots tried to be measured. Faith, worship, religious practice, religious perception and so on. the differences in dimensions have been revealed. Güzelyurt was chosen as the sample. Güzelyurt is the fourth largest city center of the island. It is a Turkish homeland since 1974. Key concepts: II. Peace Operation, Turkish Cypriots, religious life, religious perception, worship, faith. IV ÖNSÖZ İnsan doğup büyüdüğü toplum ile anlam kazanır. Hayatın ne olduğunu o toplumda öğrenir. Her insan içinde bulunduğu toplumun özelliklerini belleğine aktarır. • A Historical Perspective on Entrepreneurial Environment and Business-Government-Society Relationship in Cyprus
A Historical Perspective on Entrepreneurial Environment and Business-Government-Society Relationship in Cyprus Gizem ÖKSÜZOĞLU GÜVEN, PhD. Brunel Business School, Brunel University United Kingdom ABSTRACT This article studies the entrepreneurial environment and business-government-society relationship in Cyprus during the Ottoman Empire period (1571-1878) and during the British Colonial period (1878- 1960) with an emphasis on Cypriot Turks. These two periods have particular socio-cultural and economic importance in Cypriot history. Furthermore, these periods are significant in terms of setting out the basis of today’s entrepreneurial culture and practices in Cyprus. This article presents insights on the governance styles, significant figures and positions within society during those periods. It also discusses the connections between administrative officials and businesses. By doing so, it aims to shed light on the entrepreneurial environment in each of these periods. Extensive research of historical documents and relevant literature suggests quite similar structures in both periods, yet more complicated relationships during the British Colonial period. Keywords: Entrepreneurial environment, business-government-society relationship, Cyprus, business history, Ottoman Empire period, British colonial period, 1. Introduction This article aims to shed light on entrepreneurial practices and business-government-society relationship during two of the most recent and influential periods of Cyprus; the Ottoman Empire period and the British Colonial period. This article provides insights to current entrepreneurs and foreign investors to understand the antecedents of business culture, certain practices and structures that originate from those two periods in order to better adapt to the current entrepreneurial environment. The first section discusses each period, the way entrepreneurial practice and business-government- society relationship were shaped and the second section provides a discussion.

In a 1960 referendum, the three religious groups were asked to choose to belong to either the Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot community. They opted to belong to the Greek Cypriot community. The members of all three groups, therefore, enjoy the same privileges, rights and benefits as the members of the Greek Cypriot community, including voting rights, eligibility for public office and election to official government and state positions, at all levels.

The central contribution of the dissertation is the development of the concept of social forgetting as a corollary of social memory. I consider forgetting to include selective remembering, mis/disremembering, and omitting, distorting, or silencing past events and experiences, in order to shape collective memory. In the literature, remembering is usually privileged over forgetting, which is taken as negation, neglect, failure to remember, or unintended social amnesia in which people are considered passive actors. This study, however, shows that forgetting can be a desirable goal and positive process for some social actors, accomplished by obscuring material evidence of what another community wishes remembered.

The Roots of Secularism in Northern Cyprus and Turkey’s Ambition of Islamization Ijtimā'iyya: Journal of Muslim Society Research e-ISSN 2541-0040; p-ISSN 2541-2736; pages 119-132 DOI: https://doi.org/10.24090/ijtimaiyya.v5i2.4155 Ijtimā'iyya: Journal of Muslim Society Research is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License The Roots of Secularism in Northern Cyprus and Turkey’s Ambition of Islamization Riskiansyah Ramadhan Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract The conquest of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire in 1571 had an impact on the growing Muslim population there. However, the majority Muslim population does not make Northern Cyprus adopt Islam as the official religion of the country. This article aims to analyze the roots of secularism in Northern Cyprus, some of which are caused by British government policies, the rise of Kemalism, the emergence of Alevism and Linobambaki, and the repression of Sufi orders at the end of Ottoman rule. Besides, the political situation in Turkey turned out to have an impact on Northern Cyprus, where Turkey sought to implement the Islamization policy there. Keywords: islamization, northern cyprus, secularization, turkey A. Introduction The conquest of the Ottomans of Cyprus in 1571 brought a new ethnological and cultural element. The Ottoman government began to build various institutions, including waqf and education, and transform the church's function into a mosque. Over time, the number of Muslim populations in Cyprus has increased. In Cyprus, the Muslim population grown in several ways, such as through migration and the conversion of Christian communities into Islam.

  • Aporias of Identity Bicommunalism, Hybridity and the ‘Cyprus Problem’ COSTAS M
247-270 CAC-079931.qxd 7/8/07 11:29 AM Page 247 Aporias of Identity Bicommunalism, Hybridity and the ‘Cyprus Problem’ COSTAS M. CONSTANTINOU ABSTRACT This article examines the predicaments and paradoxes of identity pol- itics in Cyprus. It looks at the historical alliance of colonial practices and nationalist rationales that brought about a static bicommunal system, establishing the basis for inter-ethnic conflict, or what became known as the ‘Cyprus problem’. The advent of modern governmentality, dividing and classifying the Cypriot population, helped, in addition, to solidify fluid and ambiguous ethno-religious boundaries, making it more difficult for individuals to use ethno-religious identities flexibly and pragmat- ically, including their use as a tactic to resist the policies of consecutive regimes of power. The article suggests that the ‘Cyprus problem’ provides a moral alibi for the pursuit of a range of problematic regulations and practices against individuals caught between the dominant ethnic iden- tities, even though there also exist windows of opportunity and resistance on the ground. The article focuses on the genealogy and presence of hybrid communities and syncretistic lifestyles, which complicate and transgress the binary of Greek/Christian versus Turk/Muslim, and the existence of which became progressively abnormalized or exoticized. Keywords: colonialism; the Cyprus problem; ethnic conflict; homogen- ization; hybridity; representation Hasanpoulia, Hasanpoulia, flying like birds, Dressed in different clothes everyday, Greek today and Turkish tomorrow. (Anonymous Cypriot poem) I In contemporary Cyprus, the ascription of ethno-religious identity is highly political and juridical. It carries a heavy burden and provides a licence for how individuals and groups are officially treated.

3 GENERAL KNOWLEDGE Name and Surname :Ahmet TEZEL Field : Internationals Relations and Globalization Programme : Internationals Relations and Globalization Supervisor : Asst.

ABSTRACT The present contribution constitutes an attempt to consider “Cypriot literatures”, i.e. especially Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot literature, as part of a contact area which covers the former Ottoman provinces in the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Anatolia, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Egypt) in order to analyze topics, settings and narrative discourse in a comparative approach. With the aid of concepts like “dislocation/migration” and “centre- periphery” patterns borrowed from post-colonial studies, this approach aims at providing convergent structures in literary expression in Cypriot literatures in comparison to Near Eastern (especially Arabic) literatures, and it tries to create links between peripheral literary expression in migration (for instance Greek Cypriots in Egypt) and central trends and currents during the last year of Ottoman rule and during the British rule on the island.
